Off-Topic / Ukraine - a country in Central Europe? [28]

Read my postings above. I've already wrote that: "total distance from Lisbon to Yekaterinburg is approximately 5400 km and if we will divide this distance into three equal parts 1800X1800X1800 km (which stand for Western, Central and Eastern Europe) then Kiev and the largest part of Ukraine will be in Central Europe.

In this way only Russia can be 100% associated with Eastern Europe.

However the map you've posted doesn't show entire Europe, because if it does you would see that Kiev is also nearly in the middle!

Off-Topic / Ukraine - a country in Central Europe? [28]

Wikipedia defines Germany as a country in central-western Europe.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany

I think they suppose to define Ukraine as a country in central-eastern Europe, by analogy, if not purely Central European.

Unfortunately I'm not sure how Canadian citizen can apply in court on California-based company.

I mean, how much effort do you want to put in it, and what is your eventual goal to achieve.

I think it would be interesting to initiate a legal suit against Wikipedia and some other sources similar to geographic literature publishers, but personally I'm not too obsessed with it to do something like this. I think that at least they suppose mention an alternative points of view in their definitions. Also I wasn't able to find any info how a legal process against Wikipedia can be initiated at all, and in which country this company is even legally based.

Off-Topic / Ukraine - a country in Central Europe? [28]

@Alexbrz
It would be if we divide Europe into the East and West plainly. But if you do insist that there is also the Central Europe, then we need to assume there is a point which conditionally have to be taken for the geographical Center of Europe and conclude the Central Europe is anything that lays in significant distance to the West and East from this point. First of all we need to agree where this point is. Some sources claim it is located in Western Ukraine.

In 1887, geographers from the Austro-Hungarian Empire set up a historical marker and a large stone in what is today a part of Ukraine, believed to mark the geographic centre of Europe.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographical_midpoint_of_Europe

Also we need to agree where is the Western edge of Europe is. If in the East it is defined by the Ural mountains which plainly show it, in the West the Iberian peninsula bulges out far away into Atlantic sea, makes this definition more complicated. But even if we take Lisbon for the marker, as you said, the total distance from Lisbon to Yekaterinburg is approximately 5400 km and if we will divide this distance into three equal parts 1800X1800X1800 km (which stand for Western, Central and Eastern Europe) then Kiev and the largest part of Ukraine will be in Central Europe.

It is certainly culturally, economically, linguistically, gastronomically, religiously and socially Eastern Europe

How is it all relevant? In my understanding "East" and "West" are purely geographical characteristics.

Off-Topic / Ukraine - a country in Central Europe? [28]

Clearly? The distance between Lisbon (Atlantic coast) to Kiev is around 3.000 km. The distance between Kiev and Yekaterinbourg (the foothills of Ural mountains) is around 2.000 km. I think we can say that only European part of Russia is clearly the Eastern Europe. But because the largest part of Russia is located in Asia, this term is useless when applicable to some particular country. Therefore the very term "Eastern Europe" suppose to gone as a Cold War relic.

Off-Topic / Ukraine - a country in Central Europe? [28]

Wikipedia represents Ukraine (which is a Central European country) as a country in Eastern Europe. I tried to correct this mistake many times, but my efforts were always fiercely counterattacked. What do think about it? I think geographical position of Ukraine allows to call it a Central European country...

News / Three Poles beaten in front of family. The supects are American soldiers [36]

And why Poles and other Europeans have to be troubled about cultural or mental weirdness which exist in US or elsewhere? They suppose to have freedom of speech and call whatever they want whatever they like. If US soldiers don't like that they can return back home.

Off-Topic / Slavic languages - oldest European languages. [12]

Merged:

Your perception of Slavic languages

I'm interested to know what other people (especially those who's first language is not Slavic) think about sound of other Slavic languages. For example, does it sound to you beautiful, annoying, irritative, very strange, neutral etc? Also what people who's first language is a Slavic one think about other Slavic languages? How do you find them in comparison to other World languages?

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

This roman map from the early 2nd century shows Sarmatia...and they came from the East (not nowhere)...

Interesting. I never previously saw any map made by the Romans which would include modern Poland territory. I thought this area was never thoroughly explored by Romans. As well as any territory to the East of Reine. They described this area as terrible place covered by impassable thick forests and swamps. So, I wonder how could they make any map like this...

History / Poles and Russians -- love-hate relationship? [209]

Well, I afraid we started to delve into the "jungle".

Still, I think that Eastern Slavs saved Poles from nearly total annihilation at least three times: From a total scale mongol invasion, from Swedish invasion in 18 century and in 1945.

History / Poles and Russians -- love-hate relationship? [209]

That is sad of course, but at least Russians, Ukrainian, Belarusians and other nations of the former USSR didn't convert these countries
into a real colonies like Nazi did. They didn't exploit their resources didn't conduct an ethnical cleansings. There was no Russians in governments of these countries. No signs "for Russians only". They stationed there some troops in barracks and expected socialist orientation.

I mean tens of millions of death people and dozens of countries invaded or thrown into civil wars.

It was Nazi who invaded tens of countries. Russians just drove them back mostly. Which civil wars with exception the one in Russia?

History / Poles and Russians -- love-hate relationship? [209]

Poles in general do not like or trust the Russian state.

Principally I'm not trying to achieve it, so do I waste time?

We have nothing against Russian people.

This is a more realistic direction we can work to.

But we will never trust your leaders.

I never lived in Russia, so why do I need regard their leaders as my leaders (at least at a given point)?

Still relation of Poles to Russia makes me wonder. Russians can live good or bad in their country, they can be happy or unhappy with

their leaders. But what is a deep concern and even obsession of other nations about that?! If Russians experience(d) some problems in their own country, why hate them for this?! Some generous person would rather start to think how to help them...

If you want justify your hate by issuing some historical count to Russians maybe we will go more deeply in it and come to the facts?

History / Poles and Russians -- love-hate relationship? [209]

As a pole I understand our relationship with russians. Russians have hurt us greatly. We were under russian imperial rule for 123 years

About how it started. At the end of 18-th century Ottaman Empire was on the verge of collapse. They've been beaten badly by Russian army and the Western Powers realized the next war won by Russia may mean all the Balkans falling to the Russian control and immense strengthening of Russia. They decided to prevent it at any cost. Prussia and Austria threatened Russia with war if they going to fight Ottamans again and as a compensation FORCED Russia to participate in partition of Poland. Poland was divided into three parts one of which passed to Russia. In difference from those parts which passed to Germany and Austria Russian part preserved some nominal official autonomy and became called by Russians as "Princedom of Poland". They preserved even some government institutions such as the Senate and separate legal system. Russian Queen Catherine the II made the last Polish king Poniatowski her official favorite (lover) and settled him in a luxury palace. She allocate a huge allowance for his luxury life. Later in 19-th century there was Polish uprising against Russian rule lead by Kostushko. There were large casualties from Russian side both military and civilian. Yet Russians didn't punish captured Kostushko anyhow and simply released him for a sake of a Russian-Polish brotherhood. Later Kostushko fought in US and made career of a prominent general.

I'm not aware if Russians personally owned large parcels of land in Poland during "imperial rule" period. But the opposite is know exactly. Ethnic Poles owned many, likely majority of private lands in large territories of modern Western Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania. And constituted a prominent segment of Russian nobility. And even though Polish often severely discriminated their Ruthenian/Ukrainian/Belarussian serfs, Russian rulers not only refused support anti-Polish uprisings of the Orthodox peasants (for example in Central and Western Ukraine) but even sent Russian troops for Polish protection. For example Catherine the II. And this is regardless the fact that the leaders of the uprisings represented themselves as pro-Russian!

History / The Polans - founders of Kiev and Kievan Rus'. [6]

And what was their self-name before 966?

pol

The Polans (also known as Polanes, Polanians; Polish: Polanie, derived from Old Slavic pole, "field" or "plain", see polje) were a West Slavic tribe, part of the Lechitic group, inhabiting the Warta River basin of the historic Greater Poland region in the 8th century.

In the 9th century the Polans united several West Slavic groups to the north of Great Moravia. The union led by the Piast dynasty developed into the Kingdom of Poland, whose name derives from that of the Polans.

History / The Polans - founders of Kiev and Kievan Rus'. [6]

Do you know that:

The Polans (Polish: Polanie; Ukrainian: Поляни Polyany; Russian: Поляне Polyane); also Polianians; were a Slavic tribe between the 6th and the 9th century, which inhabited both sides of the Dnieper river from Liubech to Rodnia and also down the lower streams of the rivers Ros', Sula, Stuhna, Teteriv, Irpin', Desna and Pripyat. In the Early Middle Ages there were two separate Slavic tribes bearing the name of Polans, the other being the western Polans (ancestors of the modern Poles). The name derives from the Old East Slavic word поле or поляна (polyana), which means "field", because the Polans used to settle in the open fields.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

No i wouldn't have a problem with any Ukrainians in Lviv if it became part of Poland again

I wouldn't be wondered if majority of Lviv inhabitants would agree to become Polish citizens. Inhabitants of rural areas even more though. However Ukrainian govt. and rest of Ukraine would hardly tolerate it. Another problem is the language. It's not quite merciful to force people to speak in hissing language.

News / Personal opinions - Is there western European and USA plot against interests of Poland and Polish people? [32]

Well, the theme of the topic-starter is not as crazy as it seems. What makes me really wonder: how is it possible that the nations who just 70 years ago fiercely fought with each other and robed each other and struggled for survival and every piece of land and each one slave and wanted to eliminate some nations - for example Poles,at all, now became like a marvel princes who want to make anyone around happy? Have any genetic, mental or technological changes really happened to such an extent? At the moment of their entrance to EU such countries as Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and likely Poland and Lithuania obviously didn't satisfy to economic standards of EU to be accepted. However before entering EU, ALL of them joined NATO. Now NATO push for war with Russia closer and closer. They want to build military objects in Romania, Poland and Czech rep. They want to build military bases there and enter military forces. A prelude for a nuclear war? What will remain from Central Europe if it will start?

Does one thing prevent the other? And do you think that majority of Czechs, Slovaks and Poles are have-nots? If we belive to an official legends economy is steadily developing in this countries. Ukrainian economy could grow ten percent annually I guess, if it could receive a stable and trustworthy govt.

History / Give Poland back it's lost land ! [132]

I think a Confederacy of Slavic nations could be created. Total population of Poland + Czech republic + Slovakia close to 60 mln. If Ukraine will be included in this Confederacy (with its population no more than 40 mln) the preponderance still be on Western side. A union could be settled in a way that it wouldn't hurt anyone and wouldn't create influx of poor to rich cities. Polulation of all these countries is diminishing all the same and they could solve this problem either by taking in immigrants or unification. A large Confederacy with 100 mln. population could be created. Most of executive govt will be in hands of Western Slavic republics. Your thoughts?

Life / My Słowianie (music video mocks stereotypes about Poles and Slavs) [46]

Though I like the general meaning of the song I have to admit that performance on the scene was a bit vulgar. They could easily avoid these mini-skirts (which looked awful) and demonstration of a certain body parts. All this could be done much more appropriate. True Slavic beauty doesn't need to show underwear...
