News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

almost everything can be self-learned

Ending up with autodidacts who swallow ideas in an unstructured way from weird websites.

if one is interested in learning it.

Those who aren't are the ones who need education.

I remember my school years in Poland

Clearly in your case it wasn't especially effective.

History / Why is Poland weaker than Russia? [390]

Your slly post doesn't affect the facts at all. Russia is on a long-term economic, political and social decline.

the impoverished and deteriorating Russia

You said it.

how dangerous

A wounded and dying skunk sprays the nastiest odour.

crude but reliable things

Things had to be reliable; they were incapable of producing spares; not that most of what they produced was ever worth exporting in the first place.

they've now ended up essentially producing nothing.

They just sell minerals/hydrocarbons to others; rather like an African state.

even more dependent on energy exports than it was during the USSR.

And raw material extraction, like the third world. The amount of manufactured goods they export in relation to their size is tiny; when dod you last buy anything made in Russia?

That and the declining life expectancy...

Poland is already pretty strong

Strong and getting stronger. Unlike Russia (Burkino Faso with rusty nukes), it isn't dependent on selling minerals.

The value of teachers and teaching is greatly exaggerated

Not much learning goes on without them. PiS would probably like that; the less critical thinking among the populace, the more support they have.

I'm with the teachers %110!

The same. If a society undervalues its Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, Carers, Police, etc, the whole community ends up paying a heavy price.

Russia have no plan to

It isn't about what they plan.

you have to learn how

Nobody is interested in learning what Russia wants them to do. Poland above all.

How it is scary to live in this world.

When countries have the misfortune to be near Russia, it can be scary indeed...

have not only a high-resolution camera constantly watching Putin

You can see his facelift a mile off. Botox too; he's got a really waxy look like Lenin's corpse.

Just to point out: Poland doesn't recognise the 'referendum' in Crimea, the result or the annexation by Russia.

Of course not. And Putin's facelift almost splits open whenever he thinks of the new gas fields that are opening up...

reality

The whole place is a giant Ponzi scheme dependent on minerals and hydrocarbons increasingly available cheaper elsewhere.

We can't do that they cried. The director would replace us tomorrow as 30 people are waiting for our jobs. (all nonsense of course

Now the demographics have changed, they're perfectly placed to achieve something.

by denying them an average of 170 zl a day in salary.

That's small change. I'm surprised they can get anyone to work for that.

My opinion is that it is ridiculous that an EU country is apparently determined neither to pay

Their dodgy budget would look far wose if they had to pay living wages to public sector worses. Do you remember the nurses' strike?.

Hard to stop them all striking though. And there's generally support for them within society.

Russian government talk about self-determination is hilarious....

Russia lies like others breathe.

News / Polish Police Hunt for Bad Taste Boorish Brits [39]

Why can't you British behave while visiting abroad in Poland?

How would you know how people behave in Poland, other than by reading about what others say on the internet?

The police should simply have pulled them aside at the time, and escorted them back to their hotel with a laugh and a photo opp.

Or smiled and wished the high-spending, positive and happy revellers well.

It's Poland's fault!

Who said that? It's the fault of the companies that organise stag weekends.

It looked like they were having fun anyway; far less of a nuisance than a Krakowian football crowd.

Tell us, Bieggers, have you ever seen any stag parties in Kraków? Oooops; I forgot you've never been to Poland.

USA, Canada / Pulaski Day (celebrated in the US only) [54]

You're just descending to Rich and Dirk level now

I doubt that's physically possible.

Cross dressing and genderbending was surprisingly common among the Eighteenth Century's wealthy. The Chevalier D'Eon is the best known example, there are a few notable military and scientific men who turned out to have been biologically female, and the famous Warsaw resident Casanova was known to slip a frock on now and again...

self-determination

You think that any sort of referendum or voting conducted by Russia is even slightly honest?

Where does the A go?

On my school report.

this is hype for headlines and not a real story...

It's certainly a real story, and an interesting one.
