Travel / Warsaw delis (ham, chicken)? [12]

Come on guys - this has nothing to do with buying ham or chicken in a deli - if I had a deep fryer in my hotel room then I might go to the deli and buy some chicken and make my own, but I do not :(((

Merged:

Fried chicken in Warsaw

Apart from the obvious is there anywhere that sells fried chicken in Warsaw - the two places I know , Fat Cat and Blue Plate have both shut :( I can think of many burger bars , places for ribs etc but sometimes you need chicken - have had a day of driving round Poland with country music on !

Life / Apple v IBM computers in Poland [37]

I spend quite a lot of my time seeing people involved in startups and they all have Apple laptops. In other companies however it is almost unheard of - probably due to compatailibilty of excel and word etc. outside of Starbucks in the main cities you will not see many.

Law / Does anyone know how to find an English-speaking accountant in Poland? [14]

Maybe try Taxcare, it's a network of small tax accountants and they will have someone ne who speaks English, or Neotax which specialises in U.K. / Polish issues - it would cost you a couple of thousand zloty for advice but worth it in your case.

If you have a limited company and are paying yourself dividends then you might have lower tax in Poland - divid nds are taxed at 19 percent in Poland whereas in U.K. I think they are added to your income and taxed at the marginal rate. On the other hand you have a tax free allowance in U.K. where your first 5k is tax free. So a lot depend on whether your business is still growing or just ticking over.

You have some opportunities to play around with the timing of your dividends due to different ends of th tax year - that s why you should see an accountant

Ps - you won't pay tax twice on the same cash - there is a tax treaty between Poland and the U.K. that will probably survive Brexit. However the Polish govt have revived plans to get tax from Poles based in U.K. - that is a medium term risk if the UK would put in reciprocal rules but it's just rumours a the moment.

Travel / Białowieża National Park in Poland [461]

@Ironside - you can ask Polonius the going rate for defending the indefensible - might be a lot as he is clearly enjoying some late Autumn sunshine somewhere nice - maybe a sign that he has been told to get some rest before they drop some really big brainwave on the country.

If opinion was split 50/50 then surely it would take less than 2 minutes to google a list of credible scientific bodies that say logging is a good idea and that it is not a primeval forest.

Szyszko is not a scientific body - in fact all such conservation bodies in Poland including some of his own staff disagree with his approach.

If scientific opinion is divided then please provide a list of scientific bodies that support the logging and support the view that it is not a primeval forest or a natural ecosystem.

And of course UNESCO is a scientific body - the S stands for Scientific. It employs many scientists.

G - as per my previous post please supply a list of recognised scientific bodies that support the logging.

I have already provided a list of bodies that have nothing to do with Brussels but oppose the logging. A long list of Polish conservation bodies could be added to that.

So he should probably stroll over to the Foreign Ministry and have a word since their official website refers to it as Europes last natural forest ecosystem. In fact there are many such mentions in official literature.

BTW is G a cut price replacement for Polonius ? Difficult to get the staff these days.

The logging is strongly opposed by the WWF, UNESCO and Greenpeace. None of these entities are controlled either by the Polish opposition or by Brussels.

If opinion is split, could you name any organisations not connected with the government that support this logging ?

Life / Does any venue in Warsaw play 60s music? [3]

Platinum used to have the odd Motown night and you will find plenty of places slightly out of town doing Polish 60s music for an old crowd.

Can't think of much else though - it's not going to be a great commercial proposition - most Poles never got the chance to hear it much

Life / Polish Attitudes toward America [36]

Well one American is interested what Europeans think - the person who started this thread. I know you Trump voters have trouble concentrating.

I imagine such attifudes of disdain for the the rest of the world were also common in other empires just as they started to decay - in Britain in the 30s or in the last stages of imperial Rome and China. America is still a great place but Trump will cost its position in the world very dear because he is making every other big nation think about their own resources and how not to rely on the US.

What has Trump achieved in 6 months, apart from firing all of his team and replacing them with his family ? Nothing.

Zero evidence of Germans paying Poles to buy land for them ! It is difficult enough to buy farmland if you are Polish.

Life / Polish Attitudes toward America [36]

Unless is Frankfort Kentucky - natural home for Trump supporters.

Anyway he is not popular here - polls have given him only 23 percent of Poles trusting him to do a good job. Half as popular as Bush and three times less popular than Obama.

The reasons are obvious - he is a liar and a bigot with poor judgement and no knowledge of the world outside America except what he has gained from building golf courses.

Respect is difficult to build up and easy to lose - it will take the US many years to recover its image in Europe.

News / Coup d'état taking shape in Poland with Soros in background? [59]

Is that it ? The reason for such approbrium ? And it follows from this that he is planning a coup ?

He does indeed support open borders within the EU but then according to Rzeczpospolita recent poll so do a clear majority of Poles - they like the opportunity to work and study and trade with 27 other democracies.

I doubt you can find a quote from him saying all borders worldwide should be open. Probably you can find some quotes that he thinks people should show compassion to refugees - understandable since he was a refugee himself.

He has been accused of financially supporting violence ? Yes, by the usual nutjobs and bigots but there is no evidence of this.

My guess is you are not familiar at all with what he is and the ways he has made his money (not all savoury) and the ways he has used it (generally good) but you are merely parrotting the nonsense of the racist right websites and the barmy propaganda of Fidesz and PiS.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

not sure when you were last in Warsaw Dom but my guess is there could be about 5000 foreign students working there. I am guessing shark deaths worldwide is probably a few hundred a year.

In my hotel there is a black waiter at breakfast (he speaks ok Polish), one black maid, one of the the receptionists is from Minsk, most of the cleaners from Moldova, the pool attendants I think from Ukraine and a barmaid from Italy. If I was Polish ultra I would post a photo here to prove it.

I'm not encouraging the guy to do anything - merely answering his question, presumably he is a grown up and can make his own choices in life.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

There are many foreign students working in Warsaw - and there are many opportunities now where Polish is not required - there are significant ssc and back office operations in Warsaw and every other big town in Poland.

Not saying it's a good thing to exploit 3rd world student labor - I think it should be far more regulated. Just pointing out what the real situation is

Food / Papa John's Pizza coming to Poland [28]

Taco Bell had a brief experiment in Warsaw in the 90s - they were often in the same building as Pizza Hut and Burger King. Poles didn't really recognise the product so it never took off.

Sphinx is also still going - one of the few things from the 90s that is still alive ! Haven't been there for a long time - got sick of having carrots in everything - even Lasagne has carrots in it

Food / Papa John's Pizza coming to Poland [28]

I like Papa Johns but I think it will be tough - there are a huge number of very cheap locally owned places plus Pizza Hut, Polish chains like Dominum and Gruby Benek plus lots of competition from Kebabs.

But good luck to them - Poland could do with a few other good fast food concepts - would love Ed Horton for coffee and Bojangles for breakfast but can't see Poles eating that

Shameful nonsense from white supremacists.

Can you give any examples of the prescribed terroritst organisations he has funded according to your vile video ?

What are his proven Nazi ties, given that he was 9 years old when the war started ? Do you really believe he was an officer in the elite SS ?

Find some other forum full of your equally inadequate white supremacist friends in order to post this comedy.

Food / Do Polish people like frozen foods from China? [25]

No idea - that is not my job. I am not a politician for a reason - I am too dumb and would not expect anybody to vote for me to be in charge of something important. Want advice about some financial issues in Poland - then no problem :)

What Trump should do is ask his experts in the State Dept - except he sacked them all and put a businessman in charge with no political experience except doing bent oil deals in Russia.

Or he could ask his most supportive allies - UK, Germany, Australia, France, Japan - for support and advice, but he has spent most of the last year insulting them and threatening them.

Or he could ask China to help but even a brief amount of knowledge would show that publicly humiliating them is extremely culturally inapproapriate.

I think if Walker, Rubio, Kasich or someone like that was in charge it would be much better.

Joker - I do have enough expertise to have read that website and pronounce it total nonsense legally and totally incorrect mathematically.

Food / Do Polish people like frozen foods from China? [25]

Interesting and nuts article even by Foxnews standards - and some weird maths. 25m usd of bonds at 5 percent - extrapolate that to the power of 90 years and it is 2bn of debt. I think the Chinese ownership of US bonds is USD 700bn - so that would leave another 698 ban for moron Trump to worry about.

Work / Working at Volvo Company in Wroclaw [27]

Well it depends on your family situation - if you have children and they need caring for if you need medical attention or if you are worried about unemployment, then it would be advantageous to have ZUS. The PFRON is a kind of accident insurance.

If you are young and on your own then those things probably matter a lot less to you and being realistic you will not be around in Poland in 40 years to claim your retirement benefit. In any case as with most countries there is a good chance that the pension pot will be empty sometime around 2040.

When I talk about redress just means that Volvo will be able to fire you whenever they feel like it. No reasons, no unions nothing. For instance they could decide that your project is no longer something that they need and you would not be able to do anything about it.

Honestly those are decisions that you will need to make yourself, rather than relying on a forum like this.

Food / Do Polish people like frozen foods from China? [25]

I know Trump has sacked all his advisors but maybe someone should tell him that the US owes China a lot of money. It would be good to have some realistic solutions to complex problems rather than the first nonsense that bubbles into his senile brain.
