Law / UK born, want to move to Poland. Rules? [17]

Sometimes it is far better to buy a house or a flat already built. At least then you know exactly how much it will cost you. When building a place yourself you will pay 2 times more than originally anticipated and lose your mind with the stress of builders, plumbers, joiners and the paperwork for permission, building inspections and agreements. It is extremely stressful.

TVN is doing a live broadcast from Plac Zamkowy (Old Town). Details of who will be there are on-line.

Law / UK born, want to move to Poland. Rules? [17]

You have to make triple sure that you want to emigrate to Poland for ever. You have to know the pace of life, customs and everything else. If you are british there may be complications after Brexit. Make sure that everything is is both names and that you do not get conned by family members or friends.

Travel / Parking in Krakow [13]

I would search for private individuals who can put your bike in their nearby garage or covered up in front of their house.

Life / Babysitting in Poland - unwritten rules [7]

It's strange how only through different circumstances you find out how people really are. In this case I would call them 'inconsiderate and selfish' - a lesson for the future.

Love / Wedding and adopting husband's last name in Poland [7]

short answer: yes. The surname (last name) on the marriage certificate will be the name that she was known as before she got married again.

So Miss Smith who marries Mr. Brown and then gets divorced from Mr. Brown is known as Mrs. Brown. This is the surname written down.

Life / Babysitting in Poland - unwritten rules [7]

It is not only the Poles who treat a babysitter as a 'slave'. Before you babysit, you should make sure how much you are going to get paid and what hours you will watch the kids. In fact, get the money beforehand.

Real Estate / Help urgently - problems with the owner of rented apartment in Poland [6]

I would do absolutely nothing. The only way he can come after you is through the Courts - and that is never going to happen. Keep all your receipts and notes of everything that went on - just in case. Always correspond on paper with your landlord and have evidence of this. Next time when you want to rent something - have an official rental agreement with absolutely everything in it, this includes notes of the account numbers for gas, electricity, water and have them under your name and pay direct. Make sure you are registered at the address and go to the tax office and tell them of the arrangement.

Genealogy / Searching for Staszek Ratajkowski [2]

You might have a chance with the Universities who might have records from that time of students. Other than that, it seems that the friends were jealous of the friendship so no real friends to your Mum. Try the Unis first.

Study / Do Poland universities accept transfer student? [2]

Find a Polish university and email them. Some offer courses in English. You can ask them how much they will charge you and whether they will accept you. No one on this forum can give you answers as only the University has the power to accept or reject students based on their ability.

Classifieds / English/Polish speaking Canadian looking for work as Electrician in Poland [26]

If your parents have forfeited their Polish citizenship, then your application to become a Polish citizen based on their citizenship at the time of your birth might be a bit shaky.

You may have to consider other countries where your skills might be in demand.

Classifieds / English/Polish speaking Canadian looking for work as Electrician in Poland [26]

If your parents were Polish and have documents (birth records, marriage records or can get them in Poland) you would be wise to start the process of obtaining your citizenship as soon as you can. The process will take about a year provided you can supply all the necessary documents. If your parents do not have birth or marriage records they can be obtained from the towns in which they were born or married. This all costs. You will have to have all your documents (birth, marriage) translated by a sworn Polish translator. It all takes time and money.

You can claim Polish citizenship at any age, provided you can prove direct link to Polish parents.

Just another thing worth considering. Even though you may get confirmation of your Polish citizenship, your birth and marriage would then have to be recorded in Polish register of births, deaths and marriages. This is a completely separate process. Once successful you may obtain a Polish ID and a Polish passport.

Law / Lawyer familiar with EU law needed (to sue my employer in Poland) [65]

Before you can sue in the EU Court of Human Rights, you have to sue through all the Courts in the country, go through all the Appeal Courts and any Court that the country has. That is the basis of suing in the EU Court of Human Rights.

Being in Poland even for months at a time is never the same as living there. I spend nearly 6 months in Poland every year in intervals of a month. After 3 weeks in Poland I swear like a trooper as things begin to annoy me so much and I speak the language very well.

You will also have to consider your employment options, as in - will you want to work for someone else, will you open up your own business. If you have Polish nationality, Polish passport this may be easy, but with a Canadian one - you may have to jump through hoops.

Genealogy / International adoption from 1952 Poland [4]

I've thought about this some more. You could always find a radio or TV station that may be interested in the story for them to do a five minute spot.

Genealogy / International adoption from 1952 Poland [4]

I would go on 'gumtree' Gdansk and ask if anyone knows the whereabouts of the sister. Someone may remember where the couple who adopted her came from. That will be a good start. If you get a town or a city, this may then narrow your search.

Also go on Facebook to look for the name, put a note on your Facebook page and any other social media.
It may be that the sister or her children are also searching for your mother.

Law / No Minors Allowed To Leave Poland Without Parental Legal Consent? [4]

It may make a difference if the father is not named on the birth certificate. Then there are no rights, except going through court procedures to prove that he is the father. If he then proves that he is the father, the court will tell him to pay maintenance for the child and maybe even the mother.

It would be very hard for the father to do anything, (i.e. prevent the mother from going abroad) if he does not pay child maintenance or is not involved with the child.

Travel / So I went to Warsaw - my thoughts after visiting Poland [88]

@terri
Are you a native Polish speaker?...YES
...If some immigrant wants to live here it's up to him to adjust... Forgive me, but I was under the impression that all people within the EU were not 'immigrants' to Poland.

Travel / So I went to Warsaw - my thoughts after visiting Poland [88]

I spend 6 months in Poland and have experienced good and bad service. Sometimes people in supermarkets (large or small) forget that it is the customers who ultimately pay their wages/salaries. I also believe that if you are nice to people they will be nice to you back. There is nothing wrong in saying 'good morning' (or Dzien dobry Pani) when you are at a checkout or anywhere, they will say the same in return.

If you don't like the service in a shop, then do not go back there.
I find it strange though, that when someone tells you how much you owe them, they never say 'please', like they do in the U.K. it's just the amount and nothing else. Once, years ago, when I pointed this out to the girls at Krakow Balice airport who were complaining that no one left a tip, they told me that nobody ever taught them to say 'please and thank you' in the same way that it is customary in the U.K.

Law / Citizenship of baby born in Poland - Foreign Parents [17]

A baby born to Indian citizens temporarily resident in Poland, in the eyes of the law does not have any claim to be a Polish citizen. If the baby ever wants to study in Poland he will be treated as an Indian citizen.

Law / Applying for Polish citizenship through marriage in middle of divorce proceedings [4]

The best way would be to get the marriage registered in Poland (if you have not already done that) & go through the citizenship procedure. I would not tell them that you are going through a divorce unless they ask or already know. If they know already, then the basis for your citizenship (i.e. married to Polish national) do not apply.
