Food / Squirrel-stuffed pasties from Cornwall? [6]

Some think that the gray squirrel is sweet and cute

there is nothing cute about them, they are rats with bushy tails
they raid song bird nests and ring bark sycamore trees - destructive bastards

they do not ring bark sycamores in the States only in the UK - it is truly amazing but true

I seem to remember that you can only eat the meat at certain times of the year.
I think spring is the only time that they are fit for eating

Food / How to find Halal Food in Poznan (Muslim food in Poland) [55]

nasty

I do not know much about slaughter house floor design but the poor buggers seemed to be slipping all over the place

as an Australian, I would be very interested in your views on mulesing

Food / Squirrel-stuffed pasties from Cornwall? [6]

I have eaten grey squirrel - tasted a bit like rabbit.
took a lot of skinning though so it was not really worth the effort

in Cornwall and the States they are grey
In Poland they are red of course - dear little squirrel nutkins with not a lot of meat on them

they make hedgehog flavoured crisps (potato chips for our American cousins) in the UK too

Life / Where is Birds market in Poland [12]

I am interested to know what Tumbler is looking for

I knew guys in the UK who kept American red kites for hunting but these had been bred in captivity

I would never provide anyone with a wild bird of prey and have a very low opinion of others who do so
that is why I wanted to know what he was looking for

with a name like Tumbler, he is probably looking for stunt pigeons :)

Where`s that? Near Gliwitz in Silesia?

it is an attempt at humour from our tree swinging friend

Oman is in the Middle East. Tumbler is clearly a pigeon fancier named after the tumbler pigeon
who was looking for friends/contacts in Poland

UK, Ireland / "If it's not Polish, it's shite" - What is great about Polish Beer in UK? [78]

not a Polish beer amongst them
or not that I saw on first glance

The EB ad that got canned was made by Leo Burnett in Warsaw.
It was an American dude who came up with the idea

A very unhappy client. EB was basically a pirate version of Fosters

How I miss Fosters. You could get it in Poland until two years ago

check this link out - comic genius - this is how a beer ad should look like

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

If you want to go there to work, be prepared to be treated like a fool by the lazy sods who seem to think they have a God-given right to live free of charge.

I valid comment but work gives you the ability to learn and hopefully earn a promotion or transfer these skills to a different job. After 40 years, you are unlikely to be promoted to Senior Shiftless Dole Dossing Bastard for milking the system

20 grand a year for a family of five is not exactly riches beyond belief

UK, Ireland / Websites for Poles to benefit from Britain! [210]

I can imagine it wouldnt be that easy to con a deal in your actual industry.

my dear Sir, it goes on believe me

the scams that go on in tooling are legendary

I could provide you with a tool that would fly through a trial but flash (leak like a sieve) the moment you took delivery of it

needless to say I would not, but there are many tooling agents out there that would do it without a second thought

Only last week one of my clients went to Taiwan to pay a flying visit on a toolmaker only to find out that all their tools were

somewhere in mainland China. The toolmaker had subcontracted them without telling the client.

Might I enquire what line of business you are in?

EDIT

in order to steer this back onto topic
I still believe that dole scamming is naughty irrespective of nationality, creed, race, zodiac sign
and I believe that it is doubly naughty if you are going to an overseas country with a view to bleeding them dry

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

Secondly, whenever a perceived foreigner criticises their host country, the natives rush to its defence, even though they probably share much of the criticism - but only natives can criticise their country, right?

very good comment

In answer to the questions is moving to the UK a good idea, the answer is very much yes

if you are out of work in Poland, the UK is still worth a punt

A Pole from Suwalki will find it easier to find work and accommodation in London than in Warsaw

Branson came from money, his autobiography attempts to paint an entirely different story

I did not get that impression when I read it
He was a public schoolboy but was not really the Monty Burns type
Egotistic swine hell bent on killing himself in a balloon

You never told a little white lie when a big deal was on the table?

in my line of work that would be difficult. I work in precision tooling, so it is difficult to tell porkies
particularly when sitting in a room full of tool makers who have forgotten more about tooling than
I am ever likely to know. With tooling, the tool either works or it doesn't so no amount of spin or
scullduggery can help you. I admit that if someone was working in PR, media or advertising sales
then the temptation to tell whoppers would be much greater.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of people in tooling who lie their heads off, but they
usually get caught

I worked in property but got out just as the market tanked. I was lucky.

EDIT
I remember that Branson had some scam where he was importing records from Belgium
or exporting them or something and he was caught by the police.
so out of the four of them, he is the least moral I agree

Work / Englishman seeking non teaching work asap - to stay in Poland or ..? [37]

Crazily so now, I now know at least two natives who just can't find work here at all. And this isn't even a particularly desirable city!

good grief. that is really bad

so these guys who keep rolling up not speaking a word of Polish and expecting to get work are just wasting their time

the only thing that your average Brit has over a Pole is their ability to speak English like a native

You guys at the top tend only to be about putting as much in your pockets as you can

I believe that the bankers have behaved very badly indeed and have been encouraged to do so
however not all company directors are unscrupulous
naturally as an MD, your mandate is to maximise shareholder value however you can still sleep well at night

I have never ripped anyone off and have always been very honest in my business dealings
it has made the road a long slog but I have a reputation for being fair and honest and this
has attracted several clients through recommendations from existing clients

on another note, large companies have a purchasing department and their job is to police
suppliers and push the prices down whilst ensuring the quality is maintained. As a result
fly-by-night, rip off suppliers generally cannot work with blue chip clients. So honesty really is the best
policy in my industry

I believe that Steve Jobs was a reasonably decent human being, so was Anita Roddick, as is Bill Gates and Richard Branson

clearly for every Anita Roddick there are a hundred Monty Burns

I am aware of the economic situation however I do not believe that it gives people the excuse to travel to another
country (or stay at home for that matter) and rob the country blind

You take what you can.

you sum up the mentality perfectly

take what you can, line your own nest and bollocks to everyone else

do it to someone else before they do it to you

way to go

bollocks

it is like a lad from Liverpool I was working on a site with who saw some tools in a van in Bracknell and said he felt like breaking into the van

and stealing the tools just 'to teach the owner a lesson'

this just about sums it all up, steal what you can and bollocks to everyone else

no doubt that is why you did not make use of your law degree

particularly if you cannot tell right from wrong

UK, Ireland / "If it's not Polish, it's shite" - What is great about Polish Beer in UK? [78]

Exactly. Only Polish beer doesn`t suck.

Sir you are a baboon

I feel that your opinion is based on blind patriotism and nothing else

@Hudson - I too enjoy Stella, unfortunately it is very difficult to find in Poland

For non UK residents you will be amused to learn that Stella is known as 'wife beater' in the UK

Work / Englishman seeking non teaching work asap - to stay in Poland or ..? [37]

well said but maybe he needs some "tough love" on this one. It really does sound like he'd be better off in his own element. It's not a criticism, it's just what it seems like:/

I was willing to help the guy. I wrote a long post asking him for him to give me a realistic appraisal of his skills and experience

and I was willing to give him a few pointers

for all I know he might have lost the job for improprietry around minors (however I will give him the benefit of the doubt)

however I will not tolerate sauce

if he cannot be bothered to answer mi questions I am not going to bother putting him in touch with a couple of friends who

I have in Krakow who might be able to help and as far as I am concerned he can get stuffed

Delph was right by the way :-)

Thanks for all the advice...Ive done the CV blitzing thing...and will continue to do so.

Pity that its not like England for the Polish!!
They do ok in England.....way I see it...without EU assistance and the foreign investment here, this country would still be in communist state...but Poles still think of foreigners as interfering?

As you could not be bothered to answer my questions, I have no desire to help you further

lots of luck

Work / Englishman seeking non teaching work asap - to stay in Poland or ..? [37]

what brought you to Krakow in the first place?

do you have Polish friends in Krakow?

Do the have a TEFL cert?

What did you get sacked for? Do you agree with the school's decision that your teaching sucked?

What did you do back home before coming to Poland?

The easiest way out would be to find another school and get some lessons in. Don't tell them that you
were considered not good enough at your previous school of course

failing that, it is the life of the tour guide for you but winter is not the best time for walking up to
groups of tourists and chancing your arm but worth a try

alternatively roll up at a medium sized company and offer to sell on commission only calling prospective clients in the UK
then try and find a salaried job in sales after a month or so.

if you do not have a support network around you in Krakow you would be better heading for home
being alone, broke and friendless (if this is the case) in Poland during wintertime is not a fun prospect

if you really are committed you could maybe try a less glam town with less competition like Katowice for example

Anyway, the best advice is indeed to go home - if you can't find work off your own back, the work isn't going to come to you. Poland is a very competitive place - what gives you an advantage?

On a serious note -

so this was your warm, funny side that we are witnessing?

talk about kicking a man when he is down

so he tried to blag it as a English teacher? big deal

it is not as though he was chancing a job as a neuro surgeon based on having a city and guilds in woodwork

Work / Working in Poland - Logistics, procurement, imports-exports [12]

welcome

you will love it here
we are so friendly, just don't mention the war

1) Could anybody wrap-up all the job websites having ENGLISH adds as well?

what do you mean? please explain
you want someone to quote all the job sites in Poland?

2) How would somebody characterize the domain of Logistics and generally Supply chain in Poland? Could somebody get a job by speaking few Polish?

briefly, it was fragmented, now it is getting much better. Not speaking Polish is the Mount Everest of problems

3) What may somebody ask you for an interview in Poland? Questions? Certificates necessary?

I take it that you live in Athens
Are you Greek?
they will ask you if you speak Polish that is for sure

4) Warsaw or Krakow for newcomers concerning the absence of knowledge of the local language in a good level?

if you are in import-exports, why not start trading?
what sectors have you worked in import-export?

Food / Where to buy seafood in Warsaw? [8]

Carrefour is doing that now these days, but I do not trust them at all, they are perfectly willing to give a food poisoning.
So...where I can I buy in Warsaw mussels on Thursday / Friday?

if you are going to risk it, try going on Thursday as most supermarkets get fresh deliveries on Thursday in time for the Friday fish fest

discard any which will not close when you give them a gentle tap and if one will not open after you have boiled them, leave it well alone

Looking at the UK you should soon get the first-hand experience. It will be quite funny to be honest...

way to go, Dr Killmore, a young man who freely admits cheating in his exams. A career in the Polish medical profession awaits.
