Yea well i 'must' have met those who didn't know Poles since they didn't even know me and didn't like me when they found out i was Polish. English does have over 200,000 words and Polish something like 80,000 but even a well educated person knows maybe 20,000 an average person uses 2 or 3 thousand words. I understand some Russian, i've got Russian friends so i hear it often, plus i think like 10% of the words in Polish and Russian are the same, just the accent is very different, and if you listen carefully you should be able to understand some of the conversation, just sort of transition your thinking to that accent. Ukrainian if very similar to Polish i'd say about half or almost half the words are the same, my Ukrainian friend was talking with her mother i understood half of what she said, she didn't believe me, so repeated her conversation in English she was shocked as i was at first how similar in fact the languages are.
