Life / Has anyone in Poland that you know been affected by H1N1? (swine flu) [44]

After reading about the outbreak in Ukraine which affected quite a lot of people , i was expecting this virus to affect more Polish people than it did , but it turned out to be a bit of a non starter , perhaps because the severe winter killed the virus off....

Most Poles that i know did not take any special measures to remain healthy , and did not think of this virus as anything to worry about....

I do wonder if the Chernobyl accident in some way lowered the resistance of the Ukrainian people to this virus...I know a few folks in Ukraine , they seem to be ill quite a lot from one thing or another...

The Poles are a bit tougher i think...

Law / Buying 2nd hand cars - UK or Poland [7]

I will just mention a Polish friend of mine that bought an Audi diesal combi in the UK for 500 quid...and sold it in Poland for 1500 quid...The price of parts in Polska is quite high....i brought a merc over to Polska for a friend who needed an engine for his...the price of the car , plus ferry and fuel was far less than he was going to have to pay for an engine...nuff said...Its not only that they are cheaper in the UK , a car thats done 10.000 miles on UK roads will be in better condition than one thats done the same on Polish roads...

Many Poles go to Germany to buy cars..Germans don,t want old second hand cars , and its much easier to get a lhd car in Germany...

Travel / MEDYKA TO LWOW TO KIEV...whats the road like...? [19]

if you decide to dump your Russian girlfriend, then the Dnieper is the best river to do it

Ha , that made me smile....i don,t think i will be dumping her , even in such a lovely river , she is so lovely , and we are pretty well hooked on each other...

I think we might have a romantic night time cruise on the river though...

Travel / MEDYKA TO LWOW TO KIEV...whats the road like...? [19]

Thanks Nathan , thats definatly given me a few more ideas of places to see while i am there , it looks looks like a wonderfull city..A cruise on the Dnieper was something i had not thought of...

The purpose of the trip is to meet up with my Russian girlfriend who is travelling to Kiev from her home in Moscow , so we may be spending rather a lot of time just looking at each other but it would be a shame to be in such a historic city and not see some of it while we are there...

Ukraine is an ideal place for us to meet , as we can both travel there without any visa , yes folks , if you have an EU passport you can visit Ukraine for up to 90 days without a visa...

My impressions from my last visit there was... The roads are terrible . but the people , the food , and the beer were wonderfull...go there soon...!

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

Well if i hear a Polish joke i will laugh at it..if its funny , but i will also laugh at any joke told against my country or people..if its funny...

Jokes are usually based on the truth , but of course blown out of proportion with a few lies thrown in to make them funny....

I have not heard any Polish jokes while i was living in the UK , oh actually i can remember one , but i have heard a few while living in Poland , from Polish friends...

I am pretty sure i could get away with telling Polish jokes even among my Polish friends , because they know i would not wish to insult them..but i certainly would not make a regular habit of it , or tell such jokes to strangers who may be offended...

Polish people do have a sense of humour , and can even laugh at themselves , but if you are going to laugh at them , its best done among friends...

History / What connects Poland with Vlad Impaler or to say Vlad Tepes or simple Dracula [43]

Vlad usually had a horse attached to each of the victim’s legs and a sharpened stake was gradually forced into the body. The end of the stake was usually oiled and care was taken that the stake not be too sharp, else the victim might die too rapidly from shock. Normally the stake was inserted into the body through the buttocks and was often forced through the body until it emerged from the mouth. However, there were many instances where victims were impaled through other body orifices or through the abdomen or chest. Infants were sometimes impaled on the stake forced through their mother’s chests. The records indicate that victims were sometimes impaled so that they hung upside down on the stake.

I have seen worse happen on a friday night in Leeds...

Travel / What to do when it's raining in Gdansk [33]

well - you could always kidnap a babcia, take her to the forest and roll her in some leaves to see if they'll stick to her mohair beret.

Oh..its not just me then...?
