History / Poland during the Renaissance [146]

Jews were an competition for towns people from the middle ages to pre-industrial time, is not question of prejudice is a fact.
Competition in production, trade and banking.

Well...and the non-Jews had not been competitors to the other Poles?

But you are right...the Nuremburg laws in Germany and all what followed had been also one huge invitation to grab as many of their neighbours riches and get rid of unwanted competition. Germans had not been different than Poles in that regard....

Former ban from the city was a result of unfair competition in all the things the city's people did at the time to prosper.

Of course...blame the Jews...*nods*
Yes, that was the motto of these days....even today with some...

What the F are you talking about?

I think he meant that:

...Jews settled in Warsaw during the 14th century, after the reign of King Kasimierz. Even at this early stage, non-Jewish townsman felt hostility toward the Jews. In 1483, Jewish inhabitants were expelled from Warsaw.
From 1527-1768, Jews were officially banned from the city; consequently, Jewish settlers lived in jurydykas (privately owned settlements) on the outskirts of the city....

I think the change in 1768 has something to do with the partitions? I'm not sure though....

Tell me in what other cities in Europe jews where alowed to live and make a living?

Prussia... :)

jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/judaica/ejud_0002_0016_0_16145.html

...*Frederick II, the Great, enforced his father's policies even more rigorously. By his conquest of Silesia (1742) his rule extended over a sizable Jewish population; appreciating their economic importance he exempted them from his otherwise obnoxious Jewish legislation.
...
During Frederick's reign the Berlin community gradually became preponderant in Prussian Jewry. The Landrabbinat was occupied by such leading authorities as David Fraenkel (1742-62), Aaron Mosessohn (1762-71), and Hirschel *Levin.

In any case, talk of 'Jewish Power' would be irrelevant if there was greater "Polish Power' or 'Slavic Power'...We fight each other too much, and that is a loser's game...But nobody's perfect, only the world seems to belong to the 'pushy'...I'm for 'Polish Pushin'.

So you are just jealeous? ;)

But really...Israels enemies are our enemies too! Or you really have a thing for the Arabs...

Make a fair peace with the Palestinians, for a start...

You know who rules the Palis currently, don't you?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamas

...
The charter states "our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious" and calls for the eventual creation of an Islamic state in Palestine, in place of Israel and the Palestinian Territories,[38] and the obliteration or dissolution of Israel.[65][66]

These guys are chums with the Taliban, islamist fanatics!
They don't want peace with Israel...they want to kill all Jews. How do you think can Israel make peace with these guys?
And why are you supporting these enemies of the West!!!

And that a two-state-solution is the only solution for a lasting peace is clear for all moderate people in the ME and in the world. But whereas Israel has a functioning democracy able to deal with such a possible future, the Palis are hopeless as long as they are ruled by nutters!

There won't be any such peace as long as HAMAS rules...that is not the fault of Israel.
You should support Israel against our common enemy, the fantacial islamists...they hate all of us equally, Jews, Christians, Atheists, Pagans, everybody non-muslim, the whole West!

Think about it next time when you make yourself again to the mouth piece of the islamists...

In any case, whatever the origin of so-called Jews, they have absolutely no right to the land of Palestine, and no right to 'ethnically cleanse' the indigenous population....A 'Jewland' never existed in the Middle East.

So, what should Jews do in your mind?
Going back where they came from? Back to opressions, hate, murder and expellations?
Does Poland want them all back???

Jews stemmed from this part of the world...even christian history tells you that! For more than 2000 years. Jesus himself was once a Jew from the ME.

They lived there even before Palestinians did.

Do you think Poles deserve a Poland even as they lived "fine" as Russians, Prussians and Austrians?
After all Germans lived on polish lands before any Poles wandered into it.

PS: Israel wouldn't have the continous problems with the growing numbers of Arabs in their borders if they really had ethnical cleansing in mind...

And please don't tell me you like Arabs more!

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

No...really...look:

Loyal and analytical (+blue eyes, could go for a German actually):

The tallest of the penguins, Kowalski forms plans for the group and usually takes notes for Skipper. When Skipper is absent, he takes charge and his rank is Lieutenant. He has blue eyes and tends to over-analyze situations.

Then:

...Often formulating plans for the group...and Kowalski plotted the ship's course to Antarctica....He is the technical one of the group and always has his notepad...

Much to smart actually:

...While being able to formulate plans and invent things (such as a rocket ship out of a trashcan and fireworks, a rotary saw blade made of energy and multiple random objects, or a knowledge sucking machine from just a cardboard box, a magnet, and a vacuum) he is shown to have a bit of difficulty deducing simpler machines....

I think they made a German with Kowalski :)

Its kind of like the good relationship between Serbia and Russia?

Yeah...kind of. If they would had bordered Russia for some centuries they would be quite anxious as most other close neighbours still are...

BB, what country does Germany feel closest to? France, Austria?

It's regional different....the Rhine region more french (there is a huge historical overlap with for example Alsace/Lorraine but there is also the Saarland which voted to stay with Germany and not with France), Bavarians more to Austria (they are more or less the same anyhow), the north western region more to the English and the eastern region...hmmm...dunno...;)

Well the baltic coast feels near the other coast countries and Scandinavia I think...

Is that for crappy Polish quality?

No...more for the general chaotic state of the economy...(but that changed for sure) :)

That's for messy Polish parliament, right?

Yup!
It seems Poland was recognized in many countries for chaos...;)

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

It kinda sounds like open season for screwing Poland :/

No, screwing Poland wouldn't mean a situation going out of control....and it wouldn't pose a german threat (between Germans that is). It has not much to do with Poland actually...just an old saying...like "polnische Wirtschaft" or "polnischer Reichstag".

It's more about chaos in Poland than agression against Poland!

...and all of that is history anyhow. Who knows which new sayings Poland will invoke in Europe? ;)

When I get my grandmother's bike back, I will stop hating die Mannschaft ... :P.

Nah...it's more fun that way! :):):)

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

What does it mean? Google translates it as "Wtedy Polska jest otwarta".

Look here:

The proverb is then open or Poland now, Poland is open means colloquially as much as "out of control situation." The phrase can also function as threat are needed.

The English' hate of the Dutch is getting worse and worse -S

*** hides shamefully under the carpet ***

You can still unify in hating the german football Mannschaft together! Heh:)

You need to change your handle to 'Kugel Boy'!

Nope....Bratwurst is still my favourite! :)

He found innocent in Israel, why Germans want to kill him?

I dunno...beats me....

But Joe, you must really stop this
"Jews here - Jews there - Jews did this - Jews plan that - etc - ad nauseam!"
It get's really embarrasing! They are just humans, you know...

Have the Germans paid all their reparation money to Israel yet?..

Well...one big reparation is still pending...making sure that the jewish state survives!
I fear you have to go through Germany with your wish to destroy that tiny statelet...are you up for it? ;)

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

One springs to mind immediately:

"Dann ist Polen offen"
(It even got it's own wiki entry)
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dann_ist_Polen_offen

Its reserved for a situation gone out of control...can be used also as threat (to expect the worst).
Contrary to "polnische Wirtschaft" or "polnischer Reichstag" this saying is still very much commonly in use!

Like...fore example:

"If the reactor in Japan explodes dann ist Polen offen!"
;)

or

"If you really steal my helmet then...I swear....dann ist Polen offen!"
:)

(But I'm not sure if it counts as "national insult")

History / What nation do Poles feel closer to? [74]

but that's because of the germanization that was forced upon me at school.

...we so suck at germanizations! :(

True - Germany is our most important economic and political partner in recent years,
but German society in general doesn't think of Poland and Poles as of equal partners,
which makes it impossible to have truly good and close relations.

It's a two-sided sword Torq, I don't remember any thread like

"Who do you hate more, the xxxx or the Hungarians?"

The reason why Hungary or any other non-neighbour of Poland is more popular than Germany or any other neighbour is that they are in a "safe distance" and had never posed or pose a threat. Even if they had been active allies of Germany in two world wars...

It's as easy as that!

But as with Germany and France it's the direct neighbours who are most important and where a better relationship, a reconciliation is needed for the own well being.

Friendship with Hungary is nice and recommendable but they don't play a role in Polands well being, neither economically nor militarily!
