News / POLISH ALCOHOL RESTRICTIONS... [9]

How do Polish people feel about the news that they are going to be restricted to buying a maximum of five bottles or cans of beer per week....

The law seems certain to be passed this week by the government , and if future you are going to have to show id to buy alcohol , and it will be noted how much you buy , and it will be a serious offence to try to buy more than the legal amount....

I know the government is just trying to cut down of heavy drinking , but i feel this is a step too far....

This restriction does not apply to non Poles living in Poland...

Life / Child Adoption in Poland? [138]

Do you know if there are orphanages in the Tatra region?

There used to be a place where Belarussian children used to go for respite breaks , to get away from the unhealthy areas affected by the Chernobyl accident....

Many of these childern were without parents , but i think its a bit more difficult to adapt children from Belarus...

I have taken aid to Belarus , and there is a large number of children in need of care from parents..which they have little hope of getting....

News / Can Poland expect similar bomb attacks as in Moscow? [85]

Not all Muslims wear the burqa...and you don,t need a massive number of them to commit a terrorist act...All you need is one safe house , a couple of willing suicide bombers , and access to some explosives....

Poland is one of the safer places to be in the present times , but to think it cannot happen here is just foolish...Any future attacks in Poland may well be carried out by people who are already here...

Travel / MEDYKA TO LWOW TO KIEV...whats the road like...? [19]

celticbrooder: GS... a 1000cc "dirt bike"

Well thats sure going to be a better ride than the Harley sportster i made the trip on...I might be tempted to make the trip again on a bike if i have something that can cope better with the roads...

I reckon with your experiance , and the bike you have , the trip to Ukraine is not going to be so bad , but as you say its better to leave the wife out of the trip untill she gets her road butt..A trip like this could put her off bikes for life...

I didn,t see any cows in the road in Ukraine , but i did see several manhole covers that had been stolen for scrap metal..the considerate bandits often place a tree branch in the hole to warn road users its gone , and due to the fact the local government can,t afford to replace them the tree branch often takes root...Yep..no kidding , i have seen a tree growing in the middle of the passing lane on a main road...!

Don,t know a good place to pick up decent cow meat in your area , but the Poles are big meat eaters , so i am sure if you ask around you can get some decent stuff , might be a good idea to make friends with a local farmer...

For sure we will be having a piwo and Kielbasa at some point somewhere in this land...

News / Can Poland expect similar bomb attacks as in Moscow? [85]

To be honest , i am suprised that Poland has not been targeted...

If i were a terrorist leader , i would have hit Poland long before now , it would be an easy target as Poland has no experiance in dealing with such attacks , and even countries that are are unable to stop all the attacks...

I would probably go for an attack in an area like Drawsko pomorskie , lots of NATO troops on exercise here , resteraunts and bars full of soldiers...and all of them off guard and feeling quite safe...not a difficult operation for a determined bomber...

I read a while ago that some airport in Poland had some vandals spraying graffiti on aircraft...! If some spotty youth can get that close to an aircraft with a spray can , a terrorist is not going to have much problem to put a bomb on an aircraft...!

I think Poland would find it easier to clamp down on such attacks . as there are fewer immigrants to support the bombers..but the first attacks would be devastating...

Travel / MEDYKA TO LWOW TO KIEV...whats the road like...? [19]

I don,t think you are going to have any problems with the USA plates on your bike , your biggest problem on a bike is going to be the terrible state of the roads over there...

I consider myself a very experianced rider , been riding on the roads since i was 16 , i am now 56 , and got 24 years of racing experiance , despite this i was almost on my ass several times after hitting huge holes in the road , not to mention the grooves , ripples , ridges , and loose surfaces....It just wasn,t fun at all , it was just sheer hard work all the way...forget riding at night..its just too dangerous...

Whatever insurance you may have , you are required to buy insurance at the border , it does not cost much , and only covers you against injuring anyone Ukrainian , or damaging Ukrainian property...They used to point you at a small cabin at the border to get this insurance , but they did not do this when i crossed at Medyka...I got it later in town...

I don,t think your poor wife is going to be very happy after 20 miles of sitting on the back of a bike on these roads..but if you are going to do it...i wish you luck..and a safe journey....

Check out any bus stop in any village on a saterday night..You will find it occupied by worthless teenagers in fake sportswear who will be more than happy to point you in the direction of any number of illegal substances...

Look for the scum...and you will find the drugs....

Wow..my computer has changed the time..its gone forward one hour...great...!

Sadly my wristwatch has stayed at the old time...so i am still an hour behind in some parts of my life....but i guess it will be right again when the clocks go back again in the winter....

Life / Mosquitoes in Poland [40]

Yeah..the little bloodsuckers are awake up here in Zachodniopomorskie...

I am lucky in that i don,t come up in itchy bumps when they bite me...in fact i let em bite me , as they can,t fly away when they have their sucking tube in you..and i have the satisfaction of squashing them...

Life / WHEN DO THE CLOCKS GO FORWARD IN POLAND? [19]

Is it about that time when the clocks go forward an hour , or back...or can they just move sideways a little....

My Russian lady has just told me that we now have a three hour time difference , as she has put her clock forward tonight..it makes things a bit difficult to contact each other...

Can i put my clock forward now..does anyone mind...?

Would anyone object if Poland puts all the clocks forward three hours , it would make life easier for Ksusha and i ....Should i ask the Polish prime minister , or can i just go around and change all the clocks if nobody objects....

is it today..or have i missed it...and if i have missed it , do i have to wait another year to change my clock..?

Any answers to Szczecin mental hospital please...

Travel / MEDYKA TO LWOW TO KIEV...whats the road like...? [19]

Thanks for this information...I will avoid Lwow , and hope the roads are not too bad after the winter...I am sure my Jeep will cope better than my Harley did with the big holes...i came as close as i ever want to come to a big crash after hitting a huge hole just over the brow of a hill , and the bike needed new suspension when i got home , not to mention a new tailight that shook itself off on route...

I hope you have a safe trip too...i will let you know on the road conditions when i get back around 10th may...

I am not sure i believe all this nonsense about Poles eating swans , but if its true they should be put in jail , and thrown out of the country...

I have to say i would feel just the same if English people came to my part of Poland and started eating the wildlife....

I guess somewhere in all this there is a little bit of truth , but as usual its been blown out of all proportion by the newspapers read by the idiots...

I think its probably true they are guilty of taking the fish from the river , but the swans , not sure about that at all....I have never heard of Poles eating swans in Poland..!

Travel / Travel to Lwow from Rzeszow [18]

A shame its not the end of April , begining of May..I am driving from Poland to Kiev , passing Lwow on the way...I am meeting my Russian girlfriend there on 1st of May...

I don,t think you will have a problem with speaking Polish in Lwow , they are quite used to having Polish people visit the city , and they are much more likely to understand this than English...

I have visited Ukraine before , and find them to be quite friendly , i am English by the way..

I doubt the dates are going to be mutually conveniant , its a pity , as i am passing through Rzeszow , and driving on to Lwow...

I see you are from Leeds...i lived in Pudsey for 20 something years before moving to Polska..i am from Scarborough originally...
