Study / Times Higher Education rankings 2012 Poland's top universities at end! [93]

now everyone has to decide for himself whether he accepts the rankings or not but one thing, no one can do and it is to accept rankings based on his liking

I was talking about the ranking in general and not so much where the Polish universities stand.

who's grading these students,

Take a math test for example - no way you can dispute a ranking there.

because they charge a lot of money doesn't mean they are lacking in quality

That's not what I said. It's actually the other way around: because they have so much money, they are able to provide a top notch education. And they are able to be picky and take only the most gifted (and rich) kids...

Study / Times Higher Education rankings 2012 Poland's top universities at end! [93]

just like any ranking. Either accept them all or don't accept any.

That's incorrect. There are rankings that are solely based on facts (like rank the students with A's, B's and F's from top to bottom), and there are rankings based on flawed data or wishful thinking. I believe that the university ranking is flawed because they compare universities which are only in it for the money with universities which are dependent on public funding. And as Delph said: they're only taking English language into account. No wonder the rankings are Anglo-centric.

I was hoping that you might have an idea.

Sorry, can't help here.

I'm not shocked that there are so many American schools on that list.

Yup, but have you ever asked yourself how many of us can really afford to attend these schools? The ranking is kind of flawed anyway because they are comparing private and public universities.

Life / A rant about "patriotism" in today's Poland [60]

One thing I adore about Poland is the fact that if someone hears English, they'll try and use it even if they don't know much of it.

One thing I really don't like is that Anglos always seem to expect others to speak their language... ;)

News / Qatar Airways opens contact centre in Wroclaw! [27]

it's a good way to develop the basic infrastructure needed

Makes me wonder what was done in the city since 1989 if the basic infrastructure still has to be developed.

News / Qatar Airways opens contact centre in Wroclaw! [27]

I really don't know why more companies aren't opening up call centres in Lublin

Not sure that Poland should bring more call centers instead of some "real" business into the country. I recently read an article in our local newspaper about call centers in India, and even there they have an exorbitant employee turnover rate (> 60%) because the people can't cope with the xenophobic verbal attacks of the customers. American corporations are bringing their call centers home already because the customers here are not willing to talk to someone with a basic command of English any longer.

But you are ignoring the fact that English is used by 1.1 BILLION Indians

I very much doubt that over a billion Indians are capable of speaking, reading and writing English. It's usually the middle and upper classes that use English, and that is only a small fraction of the Indian population. According to this article we are talking about 100 million+ Indians. Which is still a lot, of course.

Food / What made in Poland produce would you recommend [110]

Another company that really could do well if they actually tried to export their stuff.

The majority of shares seem to be owned by a holding registered in Luxemburg. Wonder who is behind that holding. Probably a hedge fund.

News / Poland marching for faith and freedom [43]

Backers of Soldiarity, which rid the world of communism

Cough, cough... :)
I'm sure that the people in Hungary, CSSR and East Germany will disagree with you. Solidarność started it (if we don't count 1956), but the work was finished by a lot more people than only the Polish.

News / Poland versus Greece in economy [175]

In 2011 Poles sent back roughly 17 billion zloty ($5.2 billion) that's over 3 billion zloty less ($900 million) then in the record year 2007.

Still billions, but an interesting development.

Most Poles didn't move back to Poland but stayed or changed countries.

Contrary to what has been said on PF on various occasions then?

This change confirms that more and more Poles are deciding to stay abroad permanently. Some are bringing their families over therefore have no need to send money back home.

Now imagine all those Polish people returning home and not being able to find a decent job.

Out of interest: who is Jan Piński? What's his political affiliation?

News / Poland versus Greece in economy [175]

Take away the EU subsidies, subtract the billions of cash that Poles send home from abroad, and bring home the millions of men and women who left Poland for greener pastures. Let's see if the Polish economy is still as successful as you say.

This has been discussed ad nauseam already... ;)

I wasn't really serious, 4eigner. Aussies and Poms have a very special relationship, and even though we call them bastards we still love them. Unless they beat us in Rugby, of course.

News / PESA wins €1.2 billion contract with Deutsche Bahn [9]

PESA got the contract because Deutsche Bahn's previous suppliers Siemens and Bombardier were selling them trains will flaws

Had nothing to do with the bidding, it seems:

Quote:
"A spokesperson for Siemens engineering group told DAPD news agency Wednesday that the firm had not participated in the tender for the train contract because Siemens did not produce the diesel-driven locomotives Deutsche Bahn had requested."

Life / "Protestant" or Non Catholic communities in Poland [18]

Does anyone know the percentage of Lutherans in Polish Pomerania today?

Not too many left after the ethnic cleansing following WW2. 130 parishes with 75.000 members in all of Poland (in 2009).

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

Probably you don`t know about but Polish children receive presents twice in December. First, on 6 December, called Santa Claus day.

They have the same custom in Germany. There it's called "Nikolaus".

Love / Chastity rings in Poland - bad news for 'dziwkarze' [42]

morals originate from the heart and nowhere else

I completely disagree. Morals are rules made up by a society. As an example: when Captain Cook discovered the Hawaiian Islands, morals there were - by European standards of that era - close to non-existent. So were the explorers morally superior, or did the Pacific Islanders simply have a different set of morals which was incompatible with the European one?

UK, Ireland / British - Stupidest nation in Europe [127]

Isn't the territorial limit extended to 200nm these days?

Yes, but only in open oceans, as far as I know. You can't do that in the Baltic Sea or the Black Sea for example, or you would automatically end up with border disputes.
