News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

They have blocked roads around here because so many people have come out to take pictures :).
I had to sneak around them to take my film:
...

And no problem with doubt, I doubt many things all the time and I am not ve..ry good at communicating in this medium, I am more of a talker, a story teller :)

I hope that is the worst of the flooding, it has been a catastrophe, I read a very rough estimate of 2 Billion Zloty (half a billion Euros) damage so far.

Pcim, up the road from here, is completely destroyed, Tusk flew over in a helicopter today.

John Cleese's Aunt is from Pcim:)

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

To add to the drama, we are expecting an eight metre wave. The flood of 1997 was a six metre wave.

According to the latest calculations, the wave reaches the climax of the Oder River in Wrocław at the wheel. 4-5 Saturday and will have up to 680 cm in height (in Trestnie).

According to the latest projections of water will be less than two thousand. cubic meters per second. This amount will fit safely in Wroclaw Water Node, which is able to accept the three thousand. Remember that in 1997 the water flow was 3.6 thousand. cubic meters. of water per second.

Gazeta

Rumor won: Wroclaw take water for stock

Mayor of Wroclaw, ensures that MPWiK does not intend to stop the water supply. But people are in such a panic that they are filling their bathtubs and buckets.

GazetaSo it looks like it will be nowhere near as bad as 97' for Wroclaw and the rumour was that if people fill up their bathtubs and sinks, not only will you have clean drinking water but you will lessen the amount of water and therefore decrease the flood.

This is the problem with rumours, they cause panic and that causes problems.

Genealogy / Saint-Paul from Wilno born 1903 [4]

Bogomil

Bogomil (Cyrillic: Богомил, also Bogumil) is a masculine given name of Slavic origin. It is composed of the Slavic words 'bog' (god) and 'mil' (dear) and literally means 'Dear to God'.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogomil_%28name%29
It seems to be linked to Bulgarian or Macedonia.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I really hope everything will be over soon as I'm to take a train from Vienna to Kraków in 11 days. Are trains going without interruptions?

At the moment there are many interruptions to all forms of transport services, including rail.
Today is supposed to be the last of the rain but it will be a while before everything is running properly again. The damage is extensive.

They expect the flood to reach Brandenburg soon.

From where is that coming from?
I have only being paying attention to Slovakia and Poland.

The flood is leaving Malapolska today but it is a long way from here to the sea.
At least people will have had time for some sort of preparation.
Tomorrow it should be in Warsaw, places north of Krakow are being flooded.
The good news is that, the further north it goes, the more flood plains it has and the less intense it will become so there ought to be much less flooding.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I am sorry to hear about your uncle, Bzibzioh.
The river is going down now, 5cm an hour.
Meteorologists say we have seen the worst of it.
And although the banks of the river were not adequate. I have seen thousands of people , mainly fire-fighters, working tirelessly round the clock to insure the safety of the people.

I hope this lays some of your fear to rest.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

What happened, from my perspective, was I couldn't cut the grass (my indicator) cause it was raining a little everyday for about a week. The ground became saturated and then the heavy rain fell and was not absorbed but flooded the whole place. I have really never seen anything like it before in my life.

P.S. The Dutch are the leaders in water management and it really needs to be managed here.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

it's not only caused by rivers, but also by the heavy rainfall in some areas.

The rainfall causes the rivers to burst their banks.

Im sure Poland will be fine..They've started to evacuate people and if they take emergency measures they should be able to limit the damage

The damage is extensive, two banked walls to the Wisla have burst in Krakow, flooding streets.

Its been 13 years since Poland's last really bad flooding, hopefully it wont become a frequent occurrence..

Just look at the dates of this thread, every year for the last three.
And again this is the biggest one in recorded history for Krakow.
It is Wisla is dropping by something like 5cm an hour, yesterday it was rising 8cm an hour.
So it looks like we are over the worst of it, touch wood.

History / DID THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT OF POLAND CENSOR MAIL IN AND OUT OF POLAND [29]

The Black Book of Polish Censorship (Czarna ksiega cenzury PRL) consists of approximately 700 pages of classified documents, which the Cracow censor, Tomasz Strzyzewski, smuggled out of People's Poland to Sweden in February 1977.

arts.gla.ac.uk/Slavonic/staff/Blackbook.html

---------------------------------------------------------------

library.cornell.edu/colldev/slav/publishinghistory.html

A Brief History of Polish Underground Publishing During Solidarity

---------------------------------------------------------------

(History of Poland 1914-1939), was printed posthumously. Due to the government crackdown on opposition the book was heavily censored....
the Polish communist censorship completely removed any mention of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (Nazi Germany-Soviet alliance) and the section on the Soviet invasion of Poland on 17 September 1939 together with the photo of the German-Soviet parade in Brześć was removed and replaced with a general note on changed borders.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Polish cinema got around censorship sometimes and was at it's height, in my opinion, during the communist regime.
It is an amazing ability of man to be so creative when persecuted or the great quote is "After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock"

I suggest watching these but they are all in Polish, they use metaphors for communism or just laugh at it directly: Alternatywy Cztery (in Polish), Kingsajz, Rozmowy kontrolowane, Mis, Seksmisja.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I was driving around today and I have never seen such a big floor in all my life.

I just heard on the radio that this is the highest water level ever recorded.
It has reached the bridge at Jubilat in Krakow and if it covers the bridge, it will be lost, if it gets dragged away it might destroy the other bridges.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

Tragic situation in the south of Poland. Alarm status of rivers, flooding, planned evacuation of 500 residents of the flooded areas, people are deprived of electricity. There are already three fatalities due to the floods. People looked anxiously at the sky, but meteorologists don't forecast good news. Stops raining early on Wednesday. Weather has to improve on Friday. To the south of the country flies Prime Minister Tusk and Foreign Minister George Miller.

The Wisla in Krakow has compeltely flooded the walkways either side.

History / What are the key features of the Polish Eagle? [56]

"The White Eagle emblem originated when Poland's legendary founder Lech saw a white eagle's nest. When he looked at the bird, a ray of sunshine from the red setting sun fell on its wings, so they appeared tipped with gold, the rest of the eagle was pure white. He was delighted and decided to settle there and placed the eagle on his emblem."

History / If i could write European history i would unite Europe under Polish language [67]

It could be one of the oldest languages in Europe aswell. Know why? Because it was scientifically proven that our language is the only language on this globe which contains every possible sound the human mouth is able to produce. Other languages all lack a few sounds.

That is utter nonsense.

It's also scientifically proven our language stimulates the creative parts of the brain,

It's also the ugliest sounding European language :)

Esperanto invented by Dr Ludovic Lazarus Zamenhof from Bialystok.

That's what I was thinking when I first read the thread.

someone might think that You are doing your job halfheartly if You will not learn this language yourself

Language / Does anybody know of a list of Polish-English False Friends and True Friends? [60]

Nonetheless that using "billion" instead of "milliard" is originated from America.

The "billion" instead of "milliard" is the difference between the 'Short Scale' and 'Long Scale'.
It didn't originate in North America.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_and_short_scales#Comparison

(Both systems were invented by the French, but are called 'British' and 'American' for convenience.)

Language / Does anybody know of a list of Polish-English False Friends and True Friends? [60]

So you mean it is not an American originated concept but a European one?! Then I think you gotta take a look at this fella:

He does not suggest that it originated in North America.

17th century The traditional six-digit groups were split up into three-digit groups. In France and Italy, some scientists then began using "billion" to mean 109, "trillion" to mean 1012, etc. This usage formed the origins of the later short scale.

Mid 18th century The short-scale meaning of the term "billion" was brought to the British American colonies.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_and_short_scales#Timeline

In the United States of America, the short scale has been taught in school since the early 19th century.

Language / Does anybody know of a list of Polish-English False Friends and True Friends? [60]

That's a continental thing.

So it's an incontinent thing ;)

I may be wrong but I thought in Polish it was milion miliard, bilion trylion, etc.

Nope, this is new to me too.

million, milliard, billion, billiard.

what's after a billiard, I don't know, I guess Trillion

Yes, tysiąc, milion, miliard, bilion, biliard, trylion, tryliard, kwadrylion, kwintylion etc...

It is an American, to my knowledge, phenomenon in which "milliard" gave way to "billion".

What?
It is not of the new world but of the old world.

English to Polish numbering systems are different after a million.

So when I say there are six and a half billion in the world, this would be six and a half milliard people in Polish.

Our ''Trillion'' is their ''billion''.

Travel / Gaelic football Krakow [15]

I don't go there much but it is a big place and I thought they sectioned off the different levels for different fans and had a section for G.A.A. when there's a soccer match on at the same time.

Your best bet is to ring them or ask behind the bar.

Can you watch Gaelic Football games online?

You can listen to the matches on RTE Radio and I am sure you can watch it but you might need an Irish IP address. Also try RTE player now available in Poland over the internet.

Travel / Dinner place suggestion in Krakow [17]

I recommend Ariel (

(Cons)With Ariel, it is pricey.
(Pros) the inside is small but cosy, the Jewish music is great along with the food and it's location next to the night-life.

Another two places, but they are not in Krakow centre but I just thought of are:

Number one and my favourite restaurant to eat in is Niepolomice Castle
zamekkrolewski.com.pl/new/pl/news/kawiarnia_bona1

I posted some photos here
polishforums.com/off-topic-lounge-47/pf-photo-contest-35817/30

(cons) it is 25KM from Krakow market square.
(Pros) It's a classy castle and not too pricey at all, Ariel is probably more expensive and the food is delicioussss (turkey neck :). And it's in a wonderfully restored castle, with beautiful surroundings and lots to see and do besides eating.

One more place that I like is Karczma Bida
(Cons) There is nothing else to see there that I know of and it's about 20KM from the market square, on the Zakopanska road (towards Zakopane).

(Pros) It's at least a hundred year old cottage style restaurant with a very Polish interior and traditional Polish food, without being over the top at a reasonable price.

Law / May 14th -- Big Day on the markets [21]

There was a nice profit to be made last week on the Zloty - Pound; it jumped to 4.85 for about five days, then straight back down again to around 4.63.

That was with Greece dragging it down, wasn't it?
I'll have to pay attention to when Portugal goes down, I could make a shilling.

The PIIGS countries seem the strongest countries to drag the Euro down. My guess is Portugal will be next then Ireland then Italy, Spain might scrape by... This is just a prediction.

As for the Dollar in the original post.... Good question, we can't escape it, America is the superpower and with it's recovery comes all our recoveries and with it's down turn...
