Life / Homes and businesses in Poland have no letter boxes? [23]

Is there any cultural or political reason for this...?? have doors in Poland ever had a letterbox....??

our 140 year old flat has a letterbox, but it's not in use. Polish blocks of flats have a european standard letterbox (the one near the main entrance door). it's exactly the same as those throughout europe.

there is a town in devon, uk that has letterboxes at the front gate.

Language / Is math in Polish different than in English? [59]

The divisions symbols used by Poles are exactly the same, so yes mathematics is a universal language.

maybe u can't see it, but the diagram shows two different versions of the division sign. the difference may be slight, but to someone who was never taught it it is big.

Food / Why is it that some Polish people refuse to eat anything that is not Polish? [120]

I think Poles rate their food very highly and don't see the need to deviate from that. Another reason could be that they see some foreign food as Polish, e.g herring and other fish

My family have had no problem with foreign food. I have an idea that when people reject the food from a given country they are also rejecting the culture.

Still American though as they are based in Pittsburgh.

true enough.

Life / School and stadium violence in Poland? [21]

nowadays, in Poland, teachers give a mark/grade for behaviour. if the pupil gets a one he/she doesn't go to the next class/form.

when i was a lad in the uk the cane didn't stop me going to the next class/form.

News / Huge costs of preparing for EURO 2012 in Poland [38]

Maybe in the future Poland will hold the Olimpics

countries don't hold the olympics... cities do.

it would be a big fight between all those cities with new stadiums and warsaw probably winning.

i don't foresee a flood of investment or tourism just because of the footie.

investment in business is related to cash. tourism is related not only to the value of currency, but also a decent tourism industry. and Poland ain't up to it at the moment at least.

Genealogy / Tracing my Polish ancestors? My fathers Polish surname is Daj [13]

If anyone can point me in the right direction to trace his life prior to coming to the UK i would be grateful.

i'd start with the last thing first.

see if you can find records for the camp in the uk. the national archive may have something.

also, there are threads and info on the forum about resettlement camps.

try and find a WWII forum and ask for advice there.

check the family name at the usual genealogy sites. the name Daj is listed at ancestry.co.uk but it seems to apply to people of various cultures.

News / Huge costs of preparing for EURO 2012 in Poland [38]

football championships to be held in Poland and Ukraine will cost Poland 95 bln zł

one of those billion will be for wroclaw stadium alone. as i understand it some of the money is a loan and needs to be paid back. result: debt for the city for the next ten years.

i have no links or facts. just hearsay.

the company building the stadium said on the news recently that they were 'optimistic' about completion. at the moment it is nothing more than a steel frame. and there is no sign of the shopping centre that should accompany it.

History / In Memory of victims, who had their lives cruelly taken at Treblinka Death Camp in Poland [104]

The Nazis didn't keep names and numbers of the loads that went into the gaschamber, so it's hard to determine on which day exactly they were gassed.

I'm sure i saw a list of names at Auschwitz. it was all fictitious of course and quite sickening.
something like this:
11:00 joe smith. heart attack
11:01 mary smith. pneumonia

there is an online list of those who died, but without dates i would imagine.

Do any records for Treblinka exist ?

History / In Memory of victims, who had their lives cruelly taken at Treblinka Death Camp in Poland [104]

How about you, Wrocław, do you know of any victims? I just can't see how this discussion can take off without treading on toes or upsetting people.

well, i think it should be up to beckski the OP to lead the topic.

my job is to keep the thread clean until she returns.

my wife's family had relatives in death camps. i have no idea if Treblinka was one of them.

Life / Are Border Collies popular in Poland? [30]

what is the chance of getting a border collie in Poland?

I'm sure that there must be some, but for sure I have never seen one in my area.

If you can't get one in Poland try over the border in Germany.

Love / Maintenance for child born between Irish/Polish parents. [60]

Don't waste another breath or a minute of your time on this sub-human excuse for a man.

there must have been something between the OP and this man. Just continue the dialogue through a lawyer.

you were his plaything

before conception this may have worked both ways

If you take him to court for maintenance payments, he will have rights to your son. Remember he wanted the child ABORTED. Think what kind of low-life this sad excuse for a man is.

taking him to court is on behalf of the child. one has to pay to live in this world and the child has no means of income.

he may have a change of opinion and come to love his child, but it is the child who will decide if he (the father) should be included in his (the child's) life

If you allow this missing-link sub-human to infest your life again, you will be worse off.

if he is interested and keeps to an arrangement then things may be to the child's benefit.
if he doesn't show up the child will have at least 90% of the story.

Tell your son (when he is old enough) that his real Dad wanted him aborted.

there is no need to do this. we have no idea what the future holds and putting this barrier in the way will not help.

every thing is about the welfare and upbringing of the child. the parent's problems should be kept apart from this.

making this guy out to be an evil bastard is not going to help anybody involved. sensible dialogue about raising a child and responsibility are the way forward. but do it through a lawyer and the court system. that way the mother should get some peace of mind. And the child needs the door open in case he ever wants to meet his father.
