there are short versions of 'jemu' (3rd person masculine dative of also 3rd person neuter dative of 'ono')) - it's 'mu': Powiedz jemu = Powiedz mu.

for accusative and genetive there is 'go' which often replaces 'jego' (one can say 'go' is more frequent actually - one caveat 'go' can't replace 'jego' as a possessive pronoun) ('jego' works for both masculine and neuter gender for genetive but not accusative - the accusative of 'ono' is 'je': Widzę je.)

these are actually the Wrocław University dorms - both - they are called Kredka and Ołówek -now I don't know which is which and I am not really sure I ever knew ;) - i lived just a couple of steps away from them in another dorm - Parawanowiec - the rooms in Kredka and Ołówek were actually small flats - I just visited there

the thing is while 'po' refers to godzina/ the hour - (po trzeciej - after/past three ) 'za' refers to minutes and godzina is not affected (and remains in nominative)


po dziewiątej po dziesiątej - kwadrans po dziesiątej - quarter past ten - za kwadrans dziesiąta - quarter to ten

the endings -ta -sta -wsza -ga -cia that you can use with (respective) numbers is only to depict that a number should be read as ordinal much like the English 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on

so you've got 1-sza or 1-wsza (in singular for a female gender which applies to hours)

4-ta
5-ta
11-ta or 11-sta

the thing is ordinal numbers decline like adjectives so you also have 1-ej for female gender (in a couple of cases)

I suggest you learn the pattern of declination for adjectives in female gender (for a start) - it's actually the simplest declination pattern for adjectives only two forms are present you just need to know which forms to use for which case

o godzinie piątej - at five o'clock; o piątej - at five - 'o' preposition requires locative case - it should be noted that the ordinal numbers here are in female gender (because godzina is female gender in Polish) - ordinal numerals decline very much in the pattern of adjectives which have quite regular declension pattern the major difficulty is the gender thing makes adjectives have seperate endings for each gender in singular and another one for plural

if you are not Polish the simple fact is that you are simply pissed off by the lektor and you want out with him - listen carefully: Poles at large don't want all films to be subtitled - one film a week would work but there is a problem there - the audiences won't be big - I guess TVP fears the audiences could be significantly lower than for the regular 'Kocham kino' show - and this means less income from commercials

you are able to follow all your English language TV constantly without being glued to the screen all the time - why can't Poles? - most of the material you see on the likes of Discovery or National Geographic are originally English language - with subtitles instead of lektor I would have to sit all the time in front of the TV to follow what is going on and I personally like to just cast eavesdrop on what is on while doing something else like commenting on the PF

it's too early - the timetables will change two times before you come here - and this includes international trains too ( like Kraków-Berlin and Berlin-Warszawa)

I am just not able to focus at what is going on on the screen and read subtitles at the same time - and I think most of people are not able to do it - so no - please no subtitles for the regular TV shows - it is especially a hindrance when watching nature scenes

lektor has another big advantage over subtitles - you can listen to the movie programme even if you don't look at the TV - you go to make yourself a cup of tea for example and you can hear what is going on - and come back sooner if it sounds interesting

first of all - it is not the only reason - the most important reason is we are used to lektor - I hate dubbing and I have to sit with the eyes pointed to the screen to watch a movie with subtitles - gee, forget movies - take TV shows from channels like Discovery, Animal Planet, National Geographic - do you think one can follow such programmes with subtitles - it's just too tiresome

yes it's nice to see a movie with subtitles from time to time but I can't imagine watching everything with subtitles

so yes, the lektor is cheap - it is waaay cheaper than the whole dubbing thing - but for me lektor is actually the best

so, all you foreigners - you can rant as much as you can, but you won't change this - it is simply a well-established thing that Poles don't like either dubbing or subtitles

I think both examples were always correct in Polish - it's not that it is Genetive - it is just the case when Accusative has the same form as Genetive (meaning the Accusative of 'pomidor' is simply 'pomidora' and Genetive is the same

ciemności can be approximated by saying chemnoshchee in English but bear in mind this is an approximation only (for Poles the sound 'ś' and 'ci' are very different from 'sh' and 'chee'
