News / Polish Policeman shoots down a foreigner in Warsaw [300]

As I understand it, loads of ppl started throwing stuff at the police. I would call that making wrong decisions, wouldn't you?

6 policemen were wounded quite badly, including the policeman whose gun went off (I say went off because if there was a struggle for the gun, well then we don't know exactly who did what).

32 people were arrested because they threw stones, chairs and anything at hand, at the police, it was a riot.
The guy who was shot had been to prison in Poland before this and legged it when the cops showed up, so they pursued him, got him to the ground, all hell broke loose with a riot, the guy was shot while trying to get the policeman's gun. And then the police couldn't get to the shot man to help him because of the riot.

Is my understanding of what the various newspapers say.

Yeah, that's why I said perhaps I am misunderstanding you, it didn't sound like you :)

Btw, those comments I was referring to were removed in an earlier stage, so you couldn't have read them.

Yeah, I kind of just skimmed over this thread at the beginning and I think a lot of things were already sent to random thread.

I actually have to go with Harry on this one; there is such an incredible amount of "black bashing" on this and other threads that it only seems fair that the whites get a share of their own cake.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding you but WTF?

You want to bash people because other people are bashed? that's just silly.

By the accounts I have read in the newspaper, a guy ran from the police, they tried to arrest him, a riot broke out in the mean time, the guy tried to get the policeman's gun and got shot.

It has nothing to do with bashing anyone, in my honest opinion.

When the police are trying to cover their backs, the likelyhood of lies increases exponentially.

Agreed, but so far your posts read like the police are guilty of a crime and with the information we have so far from the various newspapers, it reads like they were doing their job.

unneccessarily arrested and kept in the cells overnight because the arresting officers wanted to go off shift

I know that police do lie to cover their arses like Ian Tomlinson and Jean Charles de Menezes.

But that doesn't mean everything is a lie.

Remember the witnesses cast some doubt on that.

In one report, the other read like a fact.

and if he was indeed shot while running away they will probably do so again.

Where are you getting that idea from?
I see he ran away from the police, they ran after him, he was thrown to the ground, the policeman tried to handcuff him and the guy went for the policeman's gun, in the struggle he got shot.

What do you see?

are we sure that the cop who fought over the weapon was actually the one who fired the fatal shot.

When one of the dealers wanted to snatch a police officer's gun, he shot the assailant. The young man was killed on the spot.

Nigerian trader lost his life

In the vicinity of the Decade Stadium police while trying to control were attacked by a group of black men

The incident took place at the entrance station. According to preliminary findings, a group of police officers from criminal division inspection conducted at the bazaar. The officers approached the few blacks men to their present ID. Then there was a struggle.

- The police met with a very high aggression. Large enough that the officers came to throw various objects. We also know that there was an attempt to break weapons officer. Then a shot was fired - said a spokesman for the National Police Headquarters.

I think that's a yes.

its easy to simply lunge at a man standing a meter away.

it reads like, they ran after him, wrestled him to the ground and while the police man was trying to put on the handcuffs, the assailant went for the gun and in the struggle a gunshot was fired and the assailant was dead.

Perhaps I am incorrect but I am sure someone will point it out if I am...no doubt.

It was supposed to be a routine check traffickers in the area of construction of the National Stadium in Warsaw. However, the visit was a police patrol ended in riots , shooting and death of one person. Killed 36 -year-old Nigerian who tried to escape the uniformed . At least six policemen were wounded.

How PAP spokesman said police chief Mariusz Sokolowski , while shares were injured at least six policemen. One of the weapons probably shot was Nigerian , was taken to hospital .

Let's hope the killer is brought to justice and isn't just allowed to hide behind his badge.

What if he is not hiding? what if the witnesses are correct?
Perhaps I am misunderstanding you but you make it sound like the police officer is guilty of a crime.

after he retrieved the gun from the assailant

That is the scary part, if they assailant got the gun from the policeman, it is not as if he'd just hand it back without a struggle, is it?

There is no country in the world where trying to get a gun from an armed officer is in any way acceptable.
It is unfortunate that someone had to die but if the witnesses are correct, it is better that it was the assailant than the policeman or a civilian.

"Witnesses say he tried to snatch the weapon. A shot accrued, it turned out to be fatal - Sokolowski stressed.

If it is confirmed that the guy tried to get the police man's gun, well then, of course that must be prevent by whatever means possible.

Poland has had twenty years of democracy to sort the police out, and they have failed. The Police should be professionals, however in Poland the 'police' are often semi-literates with psychological issues. And corrupt too. They used to be worse than they are now, but it will be years before they achieve even a minimal level of decency, intelligence and ethics.

The English police have shot dead people with out just cause and you have had democracy for how long?

I am a friend of the family of Harry Stanley
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Stanley

It is unclear to me what happened exactly today in Warsaw, were the lads who were selling the fake addidas and Nike clothes starting a riot? or did the police react too heavy handed and it got completely out of control?

All I see in the newspapers and on this thread are people taking sides. I will wait to see all the facts before jumping on any bandwagon.

News / Poland standing tall in troubled times [11]

please provide the facts, with the EU in crissis mode I don't think Poland will escape the pains of the downturn, which leads me to think, who is going to buy the real estate in Poland which many say is overpriced?

Poland's economy is not based on real estate like Ireland's is.
Banks were unable to give out loans to every Tom, Dick and Harry due to their strict policies.

well assuming that the worst is behind us the growth projections are positive to say the least. For 2010: 3.1% is the gov prediction which usually tends to under score the rate.

I was just reading about that:

The Polish economy will grow this year at a rate of 3 percent. GDP. In the first quarter increased on a yearly basis amounted to 3.1 percent. - Analysts estimate the ministry of economy. In their opinion this reflects our resilience to the crisis.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I think half of southern Poland has floated through Wroclaw though.

Does it become western Poland or does it remain southern and change the cardinal points?

Folks are now getting their feet wet

I see that on the news.
The video looks bad enough on Gazeta
wroclaw.gazeta.pl/wroclaw/1,35751,7920657,Powodz_we_Wroclawiu___relacja_na_zywo__WIDEO_.html

I think we should sue God for the flood, or at least the Roman catholic Church, as they represent God.
If God made this flood, surely he should be accountable for it? roughly 23,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes and a rough estimate of 10 billion Zloty worth of damage, all caused by God.

Luckily his church is supper rich and has plenty of empty buildings all over the country to house these people.
I am told that God loves us, so I am sure he will help all those people who he has caused great damage to, other wise we will have to add In absentia, for gross neglect.

They showed pictures from some villages on the TV-news, it looked really bad.

Devastated, your home, all your stuff gone.

It's actually difficult to find anything exciting to report.

In this situation, no news is great news.

Warsaw is reportedly having it's highest water level now and it seems to be manageable.

This should interest you: Flood situation worsens in southern Poland

What country in Europe is able to handle flooding in the best way possible?

The Netherlands are the world's leader, I think.

I mean are there technologies besides dykes that have been implemented in other European cities that Poland could use?

yes, ask the Dutch.

How often does Poland get flooded in comparison to its neighbours?

Their neighbours are also flooded, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary and BB was talking about Germany but I believe that is to a lesser extent.

So it looks like the rivers are down and no longer a threat, south of Krakow.
And the weather has been on and off but not raining.
So that looks like it, for now.

An estimated 10 Billion Zloty damage will be the bill at the end.

Maybe one day I will head to Poland as a refugee.

If you do come over here, I hope you bump into the Polish version of yourself and he knocks 7 shades of crap out of you, as you whimper about how welcoming and accommodating Irish people were to Poles, you coward.
