News / Is it right for Polish citizens/Poles not living in PL to vote? [11]

Such as Britain. I lost my right to vote there last year.

Same here. The reasoning behind the rule was to stop all the Tory voting southerners who live in Spain from distorting the results in marginal constituencies. The issues withing the EU are part of an ongoing row - the eastern countries dislike the idea of non-citizens voting, the rules in some other contries are entirely the other way and Italian politicians are kicking up a fuss abbout Americans who've never been to Italy potentially losing their voting 'rights'.

News / Kaczyński wants a people-friendly Poland [64]

Kaczyński wants a people-friendly Poland

What JK wants or doesn't want is largely irrelevant. He was removed from office by the Polish people, roundly defeated in a subsequent presidential election and has low ratings in the polls ever since.

Law / What banks are people using in Poland? [50]

Very comfortable.

I use Nordea. They charge 50zl a month, but other charges like paying bills etc are negligible. Good bank - very good customer service.

Life / Uptight Poles [262]

In two instances, women who were seated next to me and smoking cigarettes had the impudence to ask me to put out my cigar.

In most places a rabid non-smoker will ask you nicely. In Poland you get a torrent of abuse from some harridan.

BTW, it's nice that I'm not alone in thinking that the smell of cigar smoke is much nicer than from a cigarette.

News / POLISH COPS TO BREATHALISE CANOE USERS.... [30]

Airplane accidents don't happen that fast.

But when they do.........

Would you prefer to be flown to Okecie by a drunken pilot or passed in the river by a drunken canoist?

This is rather a pointless piece of legislation - hard to enforce and completely unnecessary.

Love / Hot Polish girls in clubs - why don't they dance/talk with the most attractive men only? [148]

Wouldn't you think that it's just a matter of time, maybe a small change in behaviour, before succeeding yourself?

Yes. We all give out signals that are almost imperceptible. Both verbal and non-verbal - I don't mean just body language, I mean something deeper in our subconscious that creates the body language, the pheromones etc. Sometimes it's very hard to explain the reason for the ways that people can react to you. Watching what the most successful people say and do can be a help - just copying their behavious makes a small difference; copying their mindset makes a big one.

Most importantly, be very confident in yourself: be sure of your goal, understand that you will reach it sooner or later, be happy about that, think about the good things that it will bring, about how it will change things for you and why you want it, and again that you're happy about it - then you're more than half the way there.

It took me years to figure that out. To some fortunate people it comes naturally.

Love / Hot Polish girls in clubs - why don't they dance/talk with the most attractive men only? [148]

Is it true that Polish girls in clubs always avoid looking to guys unless they know them?

Sometimes maybe, but Polish women can be quite forward. Seriously (and leaving ethnic issues aside) if you aren't having as much luck as you'd like to, perhaps you're looking in the wrong sort of place. Not a nightclub, not a bar - maybe somewhere else?

Life / Best place to buy winter clothing in Warsaw [11]

. What is a good place to go to get affordable winter clothing that will last?

A clothes shop. There are plenty of malls in Warsaw. You can get anything you need.

Prices are rather higher in Europe than in the US (as is quality and style), so you may save money buying there. You'd have to decide whether the space winter clothing would take in luggage or the cost of excess baggage or shipping would make the small saving worth the effort. There are good value shops here. Also markets which can be very cheap.

You should remember that although the outside can be cold (-10 in Warsaw very often, warmer in a mild winter, colder in a bad one), buildings are heated to the point of stuffiness inside. I usually favour a good heavy coat and light-ish clothing underneath. (But perhaps not as light as you're used to) You might want long johns or a thermal vest (a vest in the English sense of the word, not the AmEng meaning) for those few days when the temperature falls below -10 or so. A hat that covers the ears is a good idea for the worst days. Most people here wear them.

I tried to edit the post but left it too late to press send.

Please take seriously what I said about thermal underwear - it allows you to dress warmly but not look like the Michelin Man. @Warszawski mentioned that it can go down to -25c on a few days. This is fortunately very rare but can happen and is the tmperature is unpredictable. Thermals will give you an extra layer for those days. Aa hat that covers the ears is good for when it goes below about -5c (lasts at least a month) and gloves. People will stare at you if you don't have them. You should buy those here. Good dry boots are a must, but are heavy, so buy them here. Things like sweaters are cheap, and Marks & Spencer (their range is usually shown on their website) is a good place to shop. The big supermarkets like Carrefour are extremely cheap, and if you are a student you should get a discount at some chain stores.

Law / PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF SWASTIKA AND NAZI SYMBOLS in Krakow, Poland - Where I should report them? [56]

The origins of the swastika and spurious legends about Sarmatians are irrelevant. Public displays of Nazi symbols are not. In this case however, it just seems to be a guy selling memorabilia and antiques, rather than racists displaying banners or spraying grafitti. Shops, museums, websites, art galleries etc aren't a public display - nobody sees them unless they go out of their way to do so.

If anything else were the case, the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw would be liable for prosecution for its recent controversial exhibiton of photos. So would the Army Museum, the memorial at Oświęcim, the Uprising Museum and just about every antique dealer in the country.

In any case, the OP seems to be a troll.

Love / Polish girlfriend may be pregnant - what girls from Poland think on having a child without marriage? [54]

most polish men will want to leave you dead in the woods for the wolves. Her family will probably also, especially her brothers and father, depending on what kind of Polish family they are. You will be forced to marry her... and if you don't you will be seen as a piece of scum.

If the pregnancy is early enough, she still has the option of whether to continue it or not.

Love / Do you think that Polish should stick to Polish? [128]

we are hung well, we have powerful physique and we are tough as hell, and our balls are size of eggs.

Not in my experience. They're nothing special down below at all. Often very disappointing.

Love / Do you think that Polish should stick to Polish? [128]

Poles should stick with Poles and keep our heritage and culture strong.

All the evidence suggests that's precisely the way to make a culture degenerate.

And keep it pure

Suspect to say the least.

I don't want to see in 10 years that my country and it's people have changed and mixed with rest of world.

So you want Ciemnogrod.

Other culture marry their own

Really? Millions would disagree.

why should Poles compromise their values for other culture/religions/races of people when other people are not willing to do the same for Poles

Why shouldn't they? And why do you think that:

other people are not willing to do the same for Poles

It seems you have a very negative view of Poland.

Love / Polish relationships (race and religion) [140]

There are plenty of loving girls out there, and really, who wants to marry a super-model?

There's someone out there for everyone. It's just a matter of looking in the right place and not looking so hard that it consumes you.

(We're all going to be ''ugly'' when we're sixty, trust me!)

Hah! I for one intend to age like Silvio Berlusconi or Omar Sharif.

Study / AFRICAN STUDENTS INVASION in Krakow [197]

So you think there is no problem if a group of blacks in a European disco gets lucky with some very hot European girls making many a lonely European guy feel miserable? It's obvious whose side you're on and it's not the Caucasean side.

Why would he be miserable? Or lonely? Unless he was obsessed with sex. The colour of someone's skin really doesn't matter except to the shallowest among us.

And a discotheque is very much the wrong place to find a girlfriend.

Real Estate / Warsaw City in 2020 [58]

The progress in the construction of the second line of subway is also very fast thanks to the unique drilling method allowing to move as fast as 1 km per month ( there will be six stations, some parts of the tunel will be swiped under Wisła river . This is the third largest developement in Poland . The whole line will be completed in 2013 .

More bare faced lies.

what do you expect of a PO+SLD run local government?

Yet they've achieved more than the PiS boobies ever did. And the citizens of Warsaw are quite clear who they trust.

Work / Any advice about moving to Katowice area (Zory) to work? [13]

What was your degree in?

Forget the rail industry. Jobs are very hard to get for PKP or its affiliates. Also, you would need perfect Polish. You don't mention how well you speak the language.

some of the buildings will not be finished by Euro 2012

Some or most?

It is also not my fault if some developer cancelled his planned construction

Well, it would be good to have up to date information rather than something that sounds like a press release from North Korea.

The forum for Warsaw at skyscrapercity.com is usually a bit more accurate.

Real Estate / Warsaw City in 2020 [58]

Moving buildings is hugely expensive and time-consuming (it's been done once in Warsaw for Trasa W-Z when there was no other alternative) and the Emperor's hall is only small part of one ruined room of one long destroyed building incorporated into a new complex.

If they want to build a concrete jungle, rather than follow the model of Beijing where so much of the historic city has been wiped out (and God knows, Warsaw has had enough of that) why not follow the model of Paris la Defense. The vast site of the tractor factory in Ursus is waiting.

ground works has already started

Let's hope there's a vacant lot for it, unlike all the buildings you pretend are going to replace the beautifully reconstructed listed buildings.

Real Estate / Warsaw City in 2020 [58]

As far as I know, the developer has run out of money and at least a year ago a well-known firm of architects were commissioned to look into alternative uses for the building as it stands - not building it to full height. This is problematic due to the size of the central service core, the low ceiling height and the distance of some parts of the building from the nearest window.

That was proposed by some fool a few years ago, but won't happen for a whole raft of reasons to do with green space and geology.

If Satan is the father of Lies, Monia is at the very least the babysitter.

My post nb 22 it is Warsaw second line subway visualisation

Yes, a visualisation. Only. Not the first and probably not the last.

investor says it will be completed by Euro 2012 ( this one which looks like a sail

Lies. Deliberate lies. Check out the Warsaw Metro's own website. Nothing will be operational in time for Euro 2012.

There will be secon subway line partialy completed for Euro 2012 guests

Those of us who live on the proposed route would like that, however it won't happen any time soon. They'll modernise Dw. Stadion, but won't link it to Swietokrzyszka, as planned.

What could be wrong with growth of this great city?

There's a massive difference between sustainable growth and turning somewhere wonderful into a cheap copy of Kuala Lumpur.

And, yes, I have been there a few times.

Visiting a concrete jungle isn't the same as having your city turned into one.

Złota 44 has reached the top construction speed. As the 22nd floor was completed April 19 Orco Property Group can confirm a record speed of completing one floor per week. Złota 44 is now 75 metres high! When it is ready,

A building with huge financial problems, a developer in trouble.

Nonsense. Is there no end to your lies? You should get a job with Pravda.
Several of the buildings you claim are either "under construction" or "already built" are on sites happily occupied by Eighteenth Century palaces, others never got past the drawing board, oters are fantasy.

Real Estate / Introduction and help w/employment opportunities and Polish housing prices etc. [11]

Would i be required to have any formal teaching qualifications?

If you're taking people's money for it, yes. Also, the market isn't good at the moment.

I have contemplated starting my own business in Poland, as this is how ive worked in the past. Could anyone tell me how long it may take to start my own business and are there any cost implications.

The paperwork is annoying but straightforward. Anything else depends on your business plan. What sort of capital are you looking to invest? If you want limited liability there has to be a certain amount of share capital (50k zl when I last did it).

I have some experience of property development, is this something which is common in Poland? Does anyone know if there is scope to do this in Poland?

Quite high proprty prices in warsaw, but a very good letting market provided you're there in person. The Polish equivalent to Capital Gains Tax is an issue. So is VAT if the property is over 250sqm or on a luxury development with communal pool etc. Unless they've recently changed that.
