Work / Diary of a Teacher in Poland [181]

I remember trying to do an evaluation test so that students could see what they needed work on. I stressed (about 5678 times) that it's not graded and that cheating would defeat the whole idea of self-monitoring depended on not mixing in what others know or don't know into the result..... they nod, they understand, yes, yes, yes. We start and it's mad looking at other people's answers and whispered 'help' to each other completely defeating the purpose. this was all when I was younger and more naive.....

I try to give as few tests as possible because cheating is too deeply baked into the system (and I blame teachers and parents more than students for that).

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

A worker's a worker.

People (and groups of people) are not interchangeable cogs and a huge amount of harm (economic and social) is being produced by policies that assume they are....

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

Visas and residence permits are issued for weekend studies, so you can easily fit in 60 hours Monday-Friday

Anything's better than paying Polish employees a living wage, I guess.

News / Tragedy of Polish couple; Polish woman repeatedly raped in Italy, her partner almost killed [101]

Well that's what I was saying earlier. A life sentence in a Polish jail would be a nice punishment for them

Not sure how that would work, the usual procedure is for crimes to be tried in the jurisdiction in which they were committed. And while sending prisoners to other countries to serve prison time is known to happen, it's usually their home countries. I can't think of a precedent for the trial to happen in the country where the crime happened and then the sentence carried out in another (unreleated to the perpetrators).

Years ago my husband told me that rapes in Poland were often extremely violent

This sounds like urban legend. Many Poles are convinced the country is hugely dangerous but in the US I lived in a neighborhood where I was sometimes woken by gunfire (and/or had strung out drug addicts ringing my doorbell at 2.am). Poland seems ridiculously safe from my viewpoint (I know stuff happens but ... the frequency and degree here are relatively mild compared to many countries).

I'm sure rapes happen but that kind of phsyical assault can't be covered up and a sensation happy media would jump all over it.

Why was twenty minutes of his evidence heard in private??

Let's play Wheel of Fortune!

O - L

Care to take a guess or do you want to spin the wheel again?

I have limited sympathy for girls who get themselves into those situations through their own stupidity

I put it down to bad parenting. Your parents probably inculcated certain values in you that ketp you safer than the poor girl in the story.

News / Tragedy of Polish couple; Polish woman repeatedly raped in Italy, her partner almost killed [101]

One Italian newspaper has released excerpts from the testimony of the Polish tourist and the Peruvian transgendered person who was also raped (and whose testimony helped police capture the animals).

tv.liberoquotidiano.it/video/italia/13229812/rimini-verbali-stupro-violenze-sessuali-doppia-penetrazione-butungu-marocchini-turista-polacca-trans-peruviana-.html

Very horrifying...

Study / Any (inexpensive) English Schools in Krakow? [60]

It's worse than I thought. To get into a top kindergarten you have to graduate from a top pre-school

That sounds like Japan.... why is it that so often globalization seems about exporting worst practices across the globe rather than better ones?

News / Tragedy of Polish couple; Polish woman repeatedly raped in Italy, her partner almost killed [101]

Latest (unconfirmed) news from this story that half of the board is so determinedly uninterested in.

It's far worse than media have reported so far. The victim of the gang rape by the fruits of diversity (ethnic moroccans, congolese and nigerian) did far more damage to the victim than supposed. Her her reproductive organs were devastated and her uterus had to be removed. She attempted suicide (more than once).

But hey.... small price to pay for cheap kebabs, huh?

End rapist immigration now!

Study / Any (inexpensive) English Schools in Krakow? [60]

kids have to submit a CV, portfolio and list of references, and take grueling entrance exams.

Poor kids, never allowed to simply grow and develop and play. These children mean nothing to their freak parents beyond being pricey status symbols.

That's what legacy is all about.

Hello.... yes, the Missus and I were thinking of getting frolicky sometime in the next year or so, please save us a place in your school won't you? That's a love. Bye.

Love / How do I get a shy Polish man to make a move? [9]

I really don't want to ask him out first, I'm quite old fashioned and would prefer him to.

Forget that crap. Do what a Polish woman would do. If he doesn't make the first move then make it yourself.

Why on earth is that considered necessary.

Institutional inertia. Once a procedure is in place, on the combined forces of earthquakes, tsunamis and the Silver Surfer can hope to displace it....

Any teacher worth their salt can tell you off the top of their head the level of any child in their class without needing to grade them on a test

It's the same with exams which are ridiculously over-important and redundant, well over 90 % of the time teachers can predict their grades..

Love / Are Polish people very family oriented? [17]

a Polish man who's reached his late thirties and never been married is the exception. .... he may well never do so

True enough. And the older he is the less the marriage is likely to be about romance and more about a mommy replacement for laundry and cooking.

As to meeting his family, definitely once a Polish guy is serious about you, you will meet his family

Yes, his family is a train in the distance slowly but surely headed your way. There is no escape (if you stay with him).

the cultural differences are not so great

But they exist. The ways that Polish women indicate they want/need more commitment aren't much used by Americans (and vice versa). The ways that Polish men use to indicate more commitment aren't that commonly used by Americans.

I'm also thinking there might be debts/obligations to the family that the 'girlfriend' is not yet privy to.

Classifieds / Polish Home Carers Needed in Colchester, Essex, UK [60]

if the elderly are ill the person who does not have a good command of English cannot assess the severity of their illness

I have the idea that they're recruiting disillusioned nurses, without the command of language though even if they recognize the problem they'll be hampered in getting help for the ill person....

Brits are not, esp if they have families. Ergo, we are 'lazy'.

Yes, don't get me started. It must suck for British people to be lectured at because they don't want to live four to a room for years on end

Travel / Bank ATMs at Warsaw Chopin Airport [8]

In Warsaw? Where I am they have German and English as options. I've never heard of any kind of 6 number machine (and suspect this is an urban legend).

My favorite money machines were in Turkey where some could dispense multiple currencies (turkish lira, Euros, dollars and pounds)

Classifieds / Polish Home Carers Needed in Colchester, Essex, UK [60]

British people have been pushed out of the labour market and the immigrant workers that have replaced them are being exploited.

To be clear. What I'm saying is: You're right. And... it was deliberate (and I think it stinks as policy).

Why do you think the UK completely opened its labor market for? For Polish workers to be paid and have the same rights as British citizens? Don't be ridiculous. Immigration is often a tool used to keep wages down (because lower levels of labor are the only place where the law of supply and demand must never be allowed to work).

charging for accommodation even though the nature of the job requires someone to sleep in?

I think it's more about flitting from one old person to another (otherwise, why a rental car?) Sounds like a very bad deal.

Drag artist are harmless but belong on a stage or in clubs for adults not in school.

Wow! We agree about something!

not the wonderful Magdelena Berns by any chance?

Actually Sheila Jeffries is the one I remember most.

Drag artists are the gender equivalent of white artistes 'blacking up' to mock black people.

Drag artists (who realize and don't deny they are men) are about making fun of men, not women.

But I agree with your general TERF stance. I support a lot of second wave feminism but the third wave has completely wrecked it and I don't even recognize mainstream feminism _as_ feminism anymore.

I stumbled on some radfem videos on youtube and listened compulsively for a few days. I disagree with a lot of what they say but at least they say it clearly without all the whinging and wining and moping that characterizes the third wave....

I'm all for recognizing the human rights of trans people but most of the trans agenda is not about that.

the Wicker Man would freak podstawowe kids out a bit too much

Not suitable for children aged 12-13.

To be clear, I was asking about those two very great movies could be considered "Scottish" movies rather than just "British". I was very much _not_ suggesting showing them to 12 year olds (though I did see POMJB when I was 13 and I turned out great. Just ask my analyst and my parole officer!)

I've never seen The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

You should look it up. "My gels are the creme de a la creme" Maggie Smith is frickin' amazing in it.
