Life / what is with the blasphemy laws in Poland? [9]

what is with the blasphemy laws in Poland?

Where'd you get that idea from?
I haven't heard of any here but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Ireland have gone back to the dark ages and have recently introduced Blasphemy laws.
The ramification are worse, as other religious groups are quoting the Irish laws and approaching the U.N. with them...

UK, Ireland / Ive been in the UK for 6 days to relocate and im going back to Poland. [281]

Ive been in the UK for 6 days to relocate and im going back to Poland.

Sorry to hear that, I know you had, for want of a better word a 'dream', and it is always horrid when dreams don't turn out.

i know ive complained a lot about Poland over the past few years but jeeze its better there than here IMO.

Oh, man, aphro's post says it all.
At least you haven't burnt any bridges and can come back with a renewed enthusiasm.
I know you mightn't want the silver lining speech but well it ain't all bad for you :)

I have known this for years. Last time I went back was in April 2006,

I remember you telling me about that and you have posted about it before too.
Your analogy of a sick friend is a good one, I may have to use that in the future.

This could turn out as one of the more positive threads (kinda) about Poland.

Off-Topic / PF - The Omnibus Edition [1502]

Come on, someone get their finger out and write an omnibus edition.
I haven't been around, how am I supposed to know what is going on in my absence if noone writes on here, eh?
People are probably makeing huge sweeping generalisations about people and venting their frustrations but this thread is about laughing at all of that :)

Law / Polish licence question: theory and driving test? Cost and lenght of the process? [13]

If somebody could please tell me what's involved in getting a driving licence in Poland I would really appreciate it. I understand there's a theory test and then a driving test, is this correct?

Most importantly how much would the whole thing cost and how long, on average, should the whole process take?

You'd have to register at an address here in Poland for 6 months minimum, you would have to have documented proof of this.
You then have to have many hours (I don't know how many, maybe 20) of theory and practise, it doesn't matter that you think you can drive, this is the procedure.

Then you have to book a test and pay for it, I don't know how long it takes or how much it costs but I think you'd be better off getting it in Germany.

Love / Inside polish women's psychology and mind [109]

I would imagine Polish women are going through a similar revolution as Western Europe in the 60s/70s. It is a kick-out against a very traditional, repressive (to some) culture where the woman is only valued as a woman if she is a perfect mother and home-maker.

You are forgetting Poland's communist era, when women were valued members of the workforce.
The separation of the sexes that was evident in the "West" and the sexism associated with it, was not as prevalent here in Poland.

I find this to be a typical cultural mistake, "my culture went through this so 'their' culture must be doing the same".
I find that now in Poland there is a fair amount of ''return to traditional pre-communist values" as a house wife but women in the workforce is certainly nothing new here.

Children are sometimes used to tie a woman to a home, keep her quiet (tired) and within her role. This way she doesn't threaten the male: she cares for him and the children.

Again this would not have been the case for the majority of women.
Working in the factories in cities, during communism in Poland, people would leave their kids in daycare facilities or with extended family, grandparents etc...

The mother shoulders 99% of the practical responsibility for the children, and it is a matter of honour (or has been made so) that she doesn't need help from anyone else

Although I have noticed that women are the main care takers for the children here in Poland, the family unit is very different being a multi generational extended family as opposed to a nuclear family . With up to 5 generations living under the same roof being the norm here in Poland. Forming a support group and having direct contact with all the living generations and taking care of the children.

And, should she ever really step out of line or ask too much of her husband, she may well get the back of a hand to show that she has overstepped the mark, one evening when she has 'driven' him to drink ...

Although domestic violence is as much a problem here as it is in any "Western" country, to make such crass and extreme claims is just preposterous.

And yet, while she still has no children, the man will be as good as gold, because he needs her, to create his family, and therefore continue the progression of his status in life.

Now you just sound like a man hater.

Travel / Public Transportation in Poland [30]

Jeden bilet normalny = For a normal ticket (valid until the end of the line). Jeden bilet godzinny = An hourly ticket. (valid for the hour from cancellation). For pronunciation change it to Polish and type them in to here.

Travel / Public Transportation in Poland [30]

Does this mean that if I switch buses, I have to buy a new ticket in the other bus?

Yes, that's why they have hourly tickets.

Travel / Public Transportation in Poland [30]

In Dubs if they come early, you're screwed.

You forgot to mention that Dublin you can only exit the bus via the entry door, the other door (at the middle) is closed and I have yet to find a reasonable explanation for it. The newer ones only have one door because of this.

How is this in Poland? Are buses on time, generally? How is the fare calculated? Do you have to pay every time when you have to switch buses on the same trip?

They are on time (4 minutes late would be "very late", there are different payment methods, hourly tickets, student tickets, etc ... a normal ticket is is to the end of the line.

It also works on the honour system, whereby you buy your ticket in a kiosk, from the driver or the modern ones you can buy from an onboard machine and you cancel it yourself, like in the Netherlands.

Also, since I have to be in Warschau soon for a day, I would like to know how much the taxi fares would be from the Airport to the City Centre? Or the taxi-fares in general in Warschau? I haven't got the details of where exactly I have to be yet, that's why I ask for the City Centre. Thanks!

Unlike Ireland a taxi is cheaper if you ring it here in Poland, than if you pick it up off the road.
If you see a cab ring the number, I'm serious.

And my advice is, try to get change to pay for your bus journey, you'll be up a creek without one, if you try to pay the driver with a hundred.

History / Questions about Polish borders, Galicia and Cossacks. [50]

Why is it that Poland is much smaller than it once was.

Because it was an Empire.

Law / How to register a new business in Poland [129]

Is there no longer the need to apply for permission to open a company?

No.
The Polish government has changed quite a bit on how to open companies, it is much easier now.

the infamous PKD codes. When registering, you need to decide just what your business is doing - and it's well advised to list every single thing that you might possibly be interested in doing at a later date. I even have beer and cider production listed!

Yes.
Because if you change the function of the company later you have to do it through the courts and it costs money, whereas if you list most of the possibilities you have the ability to use the company for other functions, at no added cost.
