Language / past tense of love and like [11]

I'd have said in Polish any day over 'kochać' in that particular context. I suppose it's all a question of accepted usage vs. personal taste-:)

Kochać is very strong word and we don't use it on daily basis just to say I prefer more chocolate icecreams than vanilla icecreams. but if you want to emphasize you like something very very much you say you love it ;)

Language / past tense of love and like [11]

Taki to zrobiłes, spodobało mi się.

no.

Podobało mi się to, jak to zrobiłeś.

'lubić' can be used for people, sometimes things too.
'kochać', ONLY for people, never things.

not true.

Kocham jeść czekoladę is perfectly ok. Although uwielbiam jeść czekoladę sounds better.

'(s)podobać się'. ,mostly for things, experiences etc.., sometimes for people

Podobasz mi się - I like you
Podoba mi się ta dziewczyna. Ma charakter. - I like that girl. She has guts!
Nie podoba mi się twoja postawa - I don't like your attidute.
Podoba mi się ta sukienka - I like that dress.

'lubić' can be used for people, sometimes things too.

Lubię hamburgery. Lubię książki Terry'ego Prachetta. Lubisz lody czekoladowe?
I wouldn't say "sometimes". It's perfectly ok to say lubię coś

Work / Polish schoolteachers are being crushed by the system [24]

Also have you heard about mock matura math exams? Students were advising one another to write it as poorly as possible to make the level of real exam really easy! It's really sick approach that MEN even consider to adjust the exam levels to students' knowledge... shouldn't it be oppositely?

Work / Polish schoolteachers are being crushed by the system [24]

Middle schools are a waste of time

true

with the grammar schools left to pick up the pieces in a mad rush to matura in 3 years (16-19).

very true

The ultimate weapon - keeping a kid down a year - is never used nowadays. It's not PC.

PC is not the reason. The reason is that schools don't want problematic pupils being in their school for years and cause problems. But I know ppl who stayed for another year (and I'm young person) so it's not so rare.

I pity teachers here in Poland - they can see what's coming and they can't do a thing to change it.

it already came.

Vasovian you are well oriented in Polish schools problems. Do you (or some of your family members) teach in Polish school?

Also I want to point out that Polish school doesn't teach life in society and ethics. Cheating is not punished properly and many teachers indulge their pupils as they pity on them too much (oh they're just kids!). The effect is that hey never grow up and in older life still think that cheating is just a little sin...

Po polsku / Młodzi polscy prozaicy - kogo polecacie? [66]

Jeżeli jesteś obcokrajowcem i przebrnąłeś przez Wojnę, to muszę przyznać, że jesteś "mistrzu"! ;) Nawet ja po paru stronach miałam dość tego języka... i książkę odłożyłam w kąt. :(

News / 10 km of a road in Poland costed... 2,3 bilions of PLN! [13]

and even though the road is completely botched as a control reveiled that asphalt layer is too thin.

Is this a norm (I mean the costs) also in other countries or just Poles let themselves to be screwed??

More details here:

10 km road for 2.3 billion zł and still botched . On the stretch of the S8 express route between Konotopa and ul. Powązkowska in Warsaw detected too little asphalt in the asphalt .

"Life of Warsaw" warns that the most expensive in Poland, because costing 2.27 billion zł , over a 10- kilometer stretch of the future bypass of Warsaw , is a great fudge . So says the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. For comparison, the total cost of the construction of 91 km of the A2 motorway Konotopa Strikov to reach 3.2 billion zł .

History / If i could write European history i would unite Europe under Polish language [67]

English has by far the largest vocabulary for a start. There are loads of words in English for which there are no polish equivalents - or at least not easy to express succinctly.

Absolutely agree with Teffle. American English can have less vocabulary (in use) but certainly not British version

Language / Is My Painting Title Correct In Polish? [23]

I am aware that Polish names change according to context

not only names but nouns generally. It calls declination ;)

"Sześćset lat piosenki"

means literally "600 years of a song".

Paulina translation would be more accurate. To make it short you can write "600-letnia piosenka". Is it for Grunwald anniversary?

Life / I got beaten and kicks in my face just cuz i dont look polish [205]

Maxim it's normal that in Poland people don't help when they see a fight. It always ends very bad to people who involve in such arguments. People simply afraid to react.

Police in Poland is a joke. They won't arrest an offender even if you point them. And it has nothing to do with race. I heard many cases when victims found offenders on their own and yet the police had difficulties to arrest them.

In my town football hooligans sprayed half on the house estate but fortunately the owners of the houses had camera monitoring. The vandals were caught... and guess what? They extinguished the investigation due to little social noxiousness of an act!!!
