Study / Is it really worth moving back to Poland to study in a pharmacy school? [44]

I'm not a family person. I know wroclaw best though so I'm thinking of just getting a place there. I haven't been in some 8 years (hence, out of practice). I keep hearing hell about poland.. Ze mlodzi uciekaja. Is it financially wise to move there?

I would say that if you are happy where you are then you should stay there, you should get paid more where you are at the moment.

I don't know much about other services in Poland versus the country you are in at the moment, but these should also be taken into consideration, are there good schools, hospitals etc. in Poland? It is fine getting paid well in Poland but it may still be difficult to live there is the services are poor.

Try Noddy on you tube, there is other children's stuff also: Mały Einsteini below is probably better than Noddy.

If you search around on you tube I am sure that you wil find more.

Your local library will also have children's books in Polish.

Language / Confusion with the verb być [21]

Catsoldier, it could be either idiomatic or literal.Co dostałeś pod choinkę? indeed means: what did you get for Christmas.But it can also express combination of movement and location:Połóż tę paczkę pod choinkę - put the box under the Christmas tree.

Language / Confusion with the verb być [21]

Pod choinkę (Acc.) = under the (Christmas) treeDifference here? Presumablt, the object UNDER the table hasn't moved or been moved, whereas the gifts were PLACED under the tree, rather than simply appearing or lying there by themselves:-)

Sorry Lyzko, my understanding was that:

Pod choinkę (Acc.) ≈ for Christmas, not a literal translation.

Co dostałeś pod choinkę? What did you get for Christmas.

Is it financially wise to move there? Again, my apologies for the mistakes I make

I don't know much about Poland but I have heard that if you have a good education and get a good job that you will earn enough to live comfortably.

You would earn more in some other countries though.

Don't worry about the mistakes.

Do you want to know the best place to study pharmacy or the best place to live?

If it is the best place to live I would say that it depends on the person, if you have a lot of close family in Poland or Canada then I suggest that you stay where your family are if you are very close with them.

Only a small thing, shouldn't it be witam? It may only be a typing error or else your spelling isn't the best because you don't write in Polish but I am 100% sure that you would be able to improve your spelling quickly if you were living in Poland.

In this case, as in cases listed in previous posts we use partial genitive (dopełniacz cząstkowy).Partial genitive is used when you talk about indefinite part of a whole or about something abstract.When you talk about something definite and considered as a whole, you use accusative.

I must read more about this but it looks like the answer.

Maybe it's just an exception like "Kupiłem Forda." or "Zamów mi shake'a". It's language after all and is full of exceptions.

Hi Patrick, as a native speaker you know when to use Forda and not Ford because it just sounds right but a learner would need a rule or be told that there is no rule. Thanks anyway.

I am not sure about the rest of Poland but in Krakow we don`t say silnego - strong. It sounds very unusual to me.

I can't remember now where I got it, but it is probably from the internet. Thanks.

Some foods: jem banana, pomidora, arbuza, kotleta, pączka.But: jem tort, szaszłyk. Torta and szaszłyka sound like bad, sloppy language.I really can't tell you why. It might have something to do with declination patterns. I think Gumishu had some theory on it once.

You must be a native speaker of Polish if you know how it should be but not the grammar. For me it is the same with English, I know how it should be but not why. :-) When I am "learning" Polish I often have to learn a little bit about English grammar also.

Language / Confusion with the verb być [21]

However, logically you would think that mapy would be placed in the locative case to express location.

I can't explain this perfectly but I will try to tell you what I know.

Gdzie jest mapa?
Mapa jest na stole. Mapa is in nominative and stole locative of stół.

Sometimes you need to look at the answer and sometimes at the question to figure out the correct case, this is how it works for me anyway.

Try to do some examples for yourself also, it will help.

Butelka is similiar to mapa.

Czym są zachwycam?
Zachwycam się mapą.

O czym mówię?
Mowię o mapie.

You have to ask the questions with the map as the answer and then you can decline it depending on the question that was asked.

Language / Listening to a CD is not working - I want to learn Polish? [8]

I would say do something in Polish that you like doing, if you like reading, read a little in Polish, if you like TV, watch a little TV but overall you need to do a little of everything, a bit of grammar, some CD work etc. A good Polish teacher is a huge step forward.

Language / Film about Polish people in Jordan - audio file translation [5]

we're doing this film about polish people in Jordan . I have and interview audio and I need it to be translated into English or Arabic . is there any software I can upload my file to , and t would translate it ? or at least recognize what is said? this is so urgent !

My opinion is that you will need a translator/interpretor to do a professional job.

There might be some software that can do voice recogniton(someone mentioned software on an iphone before) but interpreting what is being said is another story, the context can change the meaning of what is being said and a computer cannot understand this yet.

Language / Rosetta Stone Polish Level 1-3 (my personal experience) [17]

Tomorrow i plan to install the product and start level 1 and do an hours studying.at the end of this i will post an update.

I understand your point IDK. He is testing this software and if it as bad as you say I am sure that he will agree with you.

He is already agreeing with you a little.

Right now i feel like its a very expensive product, but i think that will change once i start to learn to speak Polish then i think it will be worth every penny spent.

Even if it doesn't work out perfectly he will still have learnt something and hopefully will then try something else and tell us how that is going.

Love / Do Irish / British guys like Polish girls? [138]

I haven't read all the posts before this one but this in itself isn't a bad piece of writing, although the building site labourers might claim that you are being unfair to them just as another poster is being to unfair to Irish people. There is also a whole other can of worms here for debate also about intelligence, education and just being a decent human being. etc.

lolIf its one thing I have learned in life, it's that you can make sweeping generalisations.

I am afraid that builders will have to be included in this :-)

I think that it would help you learn better if you found some sentances yourself on the internet or try to make a few short sentances yourself. What sentance would you use with żeby in it etc.? People would correct them for you.

I only speak English not other languages, i speak very few words of Polish.

Best of luck. I don't have any advise as I haven't been in this situation.

Does this mean that you normally spoke English with her family before this? Will it be hard to stop them from reverting to English if you cannot understand each other?

Usually we drop off the vowel at the end if there is one to get the genitive plural but you can't do this for lekcja or restauracja etc. This isn't the whole story I know but for this example it is ok. :-)

cytryna(singular, mianownik) becomes cytryn(plural, dopełniacz/genitive.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Neither "oranż" nor "chaos" are borrowings from English.The word "pomarańcza" comes from French "pomme + orange", "pomarańczowe jabłko".Oranż: this goes as far back as "pomarańcz", kolor pomarańczowy. Both are derived from French.

Thanks Boletus. Without actually knowing Polish very well I am only guessing :-) at which words have come from the English language. I will have to quit this game :-)
