Travel / Wroclaw airport to the city center-how? [5]

Thanks. Time isn't an issue, so I'll take a bus.One more question. There's a new airline in Poland that offers inexpensive flights within the country but I can't remember the name. It's something like OLT. Can anybody help me with this this?

Travel / Wroclaw airport to the city center-how? [5]

What's the best way to get from the airport in Wrocław to the city center, by bus or by taxi? What does each cost? Thanks.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

The definition of a bubble has been posted here many times if you care to read the entire thread. There is no bubble in Poland.

USA, Canada / Would like to move back to Poland from New York after living in USA for 20 years. [155]

And mine as well.

Would you move to Poland in 2012 for one year to see if life has a different meaning if you were in my place?

Sure. Why not? Come for the experience if nothing else. If you're looking for work in your field, Mazury-however beautiful-won't offer much, and teaching opportunities there are also limited. If you plan to work while you're here, you'll probably have to move to a bigger city. If you don't have to work during your stay here, then go wherever your heart takes you.

Come to Poland. Enjoy the ride.

Work / Briton teaching freelance - and the law in Poland [21]

Nearest big city is Wrocław - tell me what you think is a fair hourly rate

I'm in Gdansk so I don't have personal knowledge of rates in Wroclaw, but on another forum for teachers I have read that 50 nett is good although that was for regular work in a school. Conversation classes may be slightly lower. I'd ask the school for 50 and see what they say.

Good luck!

They're paying to learn English. My Hurra po polsku book is entirely in Polish. That's how we learn another language.

What city are you in? Rates vary depending on the city.

You'd be teaching English, not Polish. I've been teaching here for five years. Rule number one in my classroom is speak English. I don't permit students at any levels to speak Polish.

Real Estate / Gdańsk - Safe and decent residential areas? [14]

The Old Town in Gdansk is great. I've been living here for 4 1/2 years. You can find a flat here for 1500 or maybe a little less. My first flat was a one room 30m place across the street from Madison. I paid 1000zl plus utilities and and internet. I currently live in a two room 50m place for 1300 plus utilities and internet.

I have friends who live in Oliwa, Przymorze, Zaspa, Wrzeszcz and Chelm. They're all nice areas with bus, tram or SKM connections to the city center (Old Town) so a lot depends on where you'll be working and how important it is to you to be close to the heart of the city.

Another friend told me today that he had found a one room flat near Madison for 1300zl plus the usual.

News / About fifty injured after two trains collide in Poland [73]

In this particular case the state of the railway system has nothing to do with this accident.

I think you're right. I think someone fell asleep at the switch. It was a preventable tragedy.

Work / English native speaker without a teaching experience moved to Poland and got a job [66]

I think the OP doesn't realize that his is a half baked plan at best and doesn't want reality to smack him in the face. It's a Pollyanna approach to life in Poland and it seldom works for anyone. I wish him the best those of us who have been here for a while know that the best laid plans...

Language / Need Advice On Polish-English language barrier (my Polish boyfriend and his family) [59]

first lesson, never say thank you (dzieki) to a waitress whilst handing her money to pay the bill!, she'll think that you are giving her all the change as a tip.

It happened to me my first year here even though I had heard about the practice. I automatically said thank you when I got my bill and didn't receive any change. It wasn't a big deal and I haven't made that mistake again.

I agree with using hurra po polsku 1.

I'm try to do something new

Go for your backup plan, which will fail. Don't teach English with that grammar. Good luck. You'll need it in both ventures.

Off topic. I hate amateurs who masquerade as English teachers but it makes it easier for professionals who actually know how to teach.

Is your fiance a man or a woman? if it's the latter, it's fiancee.

I'll say again, having observed a number of such schools, I've often wondered during and after the visit; who are the "students" and who are their "teachers":-)

Come to my classes. You won't wonder any more.

Work / My friend is looking for a job in Poland with a physics degree [32]

[quote=EM_Wave]He has a B.Sc in physics from CalTech (A very good American school).

CalTech is not a very good American school. It's a great school-one of the best of its kind.

Unfortunately we're in Poland and that doesn't count for squat. (Delph et all, please bear with me while I speak my lingo.)

Let's go back to the title of this thread for a minute. It should be: A friend with a physics degree is looking for a job in Poland.

Enough said.

Law / American Presidential Elections - where to vote in Poland? [3]

Contact the American embassy to get an absentee ballot, but do it a couple of months before the election. There's a cutoff period after which you can't submit your ballot, but I can't remember exactly how long it is.

Life / Moving to Poland - Wrocław/Gdańsk? [11]

I agree, although I love Gdansk and have lived here for 4 1/2 years. I think your opportunities are better in Wroclaw.

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean crossing when the little man is red?

Maybe, but jaywalking is crossing a road where there's no crosswalk (zebra crossing).

Food / Anybody in Poland actually eats soup-mix soups? [27]

Polonius, being American, is somewhat unacquainted with this concept.

Delph, there's plenty of fresh food in America, and lots more fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood, at least in California.

Law / Taxes (and national insurance contribution) for self-employment in Poland? [11]

Good question. Taxes of course, although not being British I don't know what the laws are. Health insurance depending on when you're from. Then the usual-rent, electricity, gas and internet unless your employer is going to cover the costs.

I've been living in Gdansk for 4 1/2 years. It's a wonderful city. Feel free to ask me any questions. I might even be able to answer some of them.

Work / I Want to offer a Telesales Job to 5 Brit Expats however... [19]

I have 25 years experience in sales and sales management, all of it on commission. The only downside I see to this position is the work at home aspect. Sales is competitive and people produce more in a shared location.

Getting rid of a cold caller is easy. Just hang up on them. For what it's worth, in all my years on the phone. no one ever hung up on me. I used to teach this in my sales training classes. It's easy and it begins with one simple question followed by another. They resulted in sales from small amounts up to $600,000. Not bad, but none of them happened overnight. Well, one did, and it was worth a $4000 commission and it all began with two questions.

Blocked numbers? Don't answer. It's just that easy. Change your number? Why do that?
