Love / Talking to a Polish man on "ty" terms [13]

Some people will feel offended.

And the pan/pani language is not more difficult to learn.

(It is always pan or pani + 3rd person singular of the verb.)

Language / Perfective vs Imperfective - grammar [150]

I read the newspaper (first two pages) -Czyałem gazeta
I read the newspaper (all the paper) - Przeczytałem gazeta

Czytałem gazetę.
Przeczytałem gazetę.

Czytać should be with accusative of the noun. (But it has nothing to do with perf/imp.).

Remember another rule:

Repeated actions are always imperfect (doesnt matter if they are finished or not).

E.g.
Często czytałem tę gazetę.

The good news:
The future tense is built on the same principles of perf./imp. as the past tense. So it will be easy.

Travel / Polish trains often get frozen and are overcrowded? :-) [35]

At least they have a good discount for students. :)
And I havent been to any country where the trains arent often late.
I often go Warszawa-Bialystok. And these trains are usually on time.

I had taken the train from Warszawa to Lublin last August. The train wasn't overcrowded, just hot and humid as hell. I don't know which was more unbearable; the heat or hearing my grouchy sis, complain all the way along the train ride. Got to admit, I did admire seeing the Polish countryside along the way.

Love / POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY [127]

Don't couples in Sweden split bills and even dinner checks 50/50?

Not really. But the woman pays for a dinner as well from time to time. But it is usually still the man who pays on dates etc.

Love / POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY [127]

MY POLISH GIRLFREIND OF 4 YEARS HAS JUST GOT A JOB I SUPPORTED HER FOR OVER 2 YEARS PAYING FOR EVERTHING AND ALSO GIVING 400 POUND IN HER POCKET A MONTH NOW SHE GOT A JOB SHE DOESNT PAY HER WAY

Maybe you should do something about it? Dont play your whole life with her rules. Its your life.

Take a serious discussion with her, and show that you demand a change if you are going to continue the relationship.

If she doesnt change, you should leave her for sure. That might lead to a change.

Language / Two extremely helpful grammar websites for Polish [2]

Are dobrym and kolegą in the instrumental case because they follow the verb być (jesteś)??

Yes. :)

Just like:

On jest dobrym lekarzem.
Ona jest ładną dziewczyną.

Language / chodźmy vs idźmy? [32]

Idziemy do Kina!

Chodźmy would be better here.

There is a Polish movie called "Jutro idziemy do kina".

So in what places you must use chodźmy (and not idziemy)? Or is it just a matter of taste?

Can chodźmy maybe indicate that the action is supposed to be repeated? Chodzić is usually used with repeated actions (Często chodzę do kina). And iść are single actions (jutro idę do kina). This is clear. But the chodźmy/idziemy situation seems to be less clear.

Language / chodźmy vs idźmy? [32]

In my grammar book I find 2 versions:

idziemy (present tense, 1st person plural)
idźmy (imperative, 1st person plural)

However, it seems like many Poles use idziemy! as imperative?

The same with chodzimy/chodźmy.

Study / AFRICAN STUDENTS INVASION in Krakow [197]

jarnowa et. al.

I have lived in Poland for 4 years now.

It seems to me, that Polish girls (in general) are more attracted to Spanish/Italian looks than non-european looks. And people from Spain/Italy are also from the EU (just like you and me). Do you mind if they come to Poland (and get Polish girls)?

immigrant group of 90% single males

Are 90% of the immigrants men? I never heard that before.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

w w w .timesonline. co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article4749183.ece
Sharia law is now adopted to a greater or lesser extent in the UK.

[timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article4749183.ece] - Sharia law is now adopted, to a greater or lesser extent, in the UK.

It's sick, from my point of view, to have parallel court systems.

Now the EU is pretty much cutting the throats of Nations like Poland, Romania, Slovakia ect

EU gives Poland extremely much money every year.

Money that most other EU-countries can't even dream about to get.

Poland is one of the biggest netto-recievers in the EU.

Love / In Polish relationships who is the boss? [46]

I don't know if this is typical only for Polish relationships. Probably you can find the same in many other countries as well.

Language / How to say 'mean' in Polish? [22]

i have learnt that chodzić is to walk or do s/th on foot

It's correct.

But chodzić has 2 different meanings. But in this situation we don't decline it. It's used only in 3rd person singular. As I said before, it's difficult to translate word by word. So this expression is better to learn by heart.

But you are right, the MAIN meaning is "to go by foot".

Language / How to say 'mean' in Polish? [22]

This is difficult to translate word by word.

The most natural way to express it in Polish is with 3rd person singular of chodzić.

O to właśnie chodzi! (That's exactly what i mean/that's precisely the point)
Nie chodzi o to! (That's not what i mean/that's not the point)

Language / Do I have these Polish word cases right? [16]

Well.. you only made 1 mistake.

You used singular ending of adjectives even when it should be plural.

When the noun is in plural, the adjective must be as well.

(In nominative and accusative) all plural adjectives end in -e. So it's very easy.

Language / "TO" or "ONO" / "i je je"? [20]

On ma jajko i je je.

One of the je is 3rd person singular of the verb 'eat' (jeść). The other je is personal pronoun, in accusative gender, of 'ono' (neutral gender singular).

Love / Sexual diseases! Please tell me how I go about getting tested in Poland? [103]

Klinika Dermatologii i Wenerologii
Koszykowa 82A
02-008 Warszawa

STDs (incl. HIV) are more common in the UK than in Poland.
However, Ukraine has a huge number of HIV-pos people.

The problem in Poland is the very many people never test themseleves, even when they had a lot of unprotected sex.

Language / WHY IS SMS MASCULINE ANIMATE IN POLISH? [9]

I live in Poland now, and you hear both versions frequently.

I don't think anyone can say that one version is more correct than the other.
