Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

Pawian, one strange thing for me was seeing... I don't even know how to call it, like "ready made grave" - you'd have the family name there, some poem, but no-one was actually dead yet or buried there.

Food / Which ingredients/vegetables/fruits/meats are nonexistent in traditional Polish cuisine? [125]

but both were too bland, too rubbery and too unfatty.

There's a trick. You need to squeeze all the water out of it, preferably by first squeezing it and then leaving it with something heavy on top for an hour or so. After that, marinate it with whatever spices/herbs you like, and leave it overnight in the fridge. Next day, it'll be perfect.

I'm quite fond of it because it's very filling and yet it doesn't leave you feeling bloated.

I have never seen or heard of it before! I might try making it out of curiosity, though my soup making skills are terrible ;)

IMO if these canned soups were in Poland, I'm certain they'd be an absolute hit

Not a chance. No-one is going to pay for small tins of soup when most people can make it one way or another.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

Yup, just read the same thing. It seems that quite a few groups have had enough of "free money" being handed out, and that they want a share of the spoils.

Language / What do foreigners find the hardest part of Polish? [63]

I'm wondering what non-Slavs here on PF find is the most difficult part of learning Polish.

For me, the hardest part is still not being excessively polite in speech because it's not needed, but is rather implied in the choice of words. At the same time, the concept of "being on first name terms" with someone is still exceptionally odd to me, even though it's really English that's the odd one out.

Incorrect. Polish tax applies in full, however, Polish tax credits will be applied to any tax pre-paid in the US.

Polish tax is essentially 18% on the first 85,000PLN a year, then 32% afterwards.

This would bring untold damage to PiS

It would hurt them badly, because the middle classes would riot, while the working classes often own large properties that they inherited, but they definitely couldn't afford to pay several thousand złoty a year tax.

Fire the first 100 publicly, with no chance of ever coming back, and the remaining 299,900 will fold

As we know from Polish history, fire 1 and the remaining 299,999 will organise a general strike that will bring the country to its knees.

I agree with others, you need a new script, because this one is painfully lacking.

Real Estate / Price of Real estate for sale in Poland, Białołęka [23]

Ursynow always seems crowded but has decent housing stock (mostly flats).

A friend of mine just bought a huge flat within touching distance of SGGW, and reckons that it's got the best of all worlds. No problems with parking, it's very green with easy access to the expressway and Okęcie, close to decent jobs in Mokotów, yet it's just 20 minutes by metro to Centrum as well.

Fortunately, we don't have to fear the police in Europe, nor do we have to act like clowns when the police stop us.

Polish schools can concentrate on academia without worrying about "lockdown" or other strange American concepts.

Have you seen how this scum behave in Prague,Krakow and Waraw?

To be honest though, part of the problem is that they're encouraged to do so. The concept of "stop serving drunk people" seems to be totally unheard of here, whereas when I worked in a horrible corporate event club type venue during my student days, it was absolutely normal to tell scum that they were getting nothing more to drink and that was that. The bloke in charge never questioned us - if we felt that someone had had enough to drink, or if they were going to become a problem for themselves/others, then that was it for them.

If someone said that here, they'd probably get sacked. It's a pity.

exams are often ABCD and checking answers requires almost no engagement from them.

That's simply not true.

I wonder why a guest poster would magically appear to denounce teachers.

There has already been talk in this posting about the lack of creativity from teachers

Unfortunately, with a incredibly rigid "core programme" and a lack of hours to implement it, it's always going to be a struggle for teachers to be creative on top.

One of my colleagues suggests that a massive improvement in Poland would be to increase the amount of teaching hours by 25% while decreasing the amount of proscribed content by 25%, therefore allowing teachers the chance to actually be creative.

History / Why is Poland weaker than Russia? [390]

when dod you last buy anything made in Russia?

It's a shame really, for a country that had a reputation for producing crude but reliable things, they've now ended up essentially producing nothing.

The only Russian company that comes to mind as being innovative is Kaspersky internet security, which really shows how far they've fallen since the days of being known for their skill in intellectual fields such as mathematics and science.

it isn't dependent on selling minerals.

I don't know if it's true, but I've read somewhere that Russia is even more dependent on energy exports than it was during the USSR.

News / What should Poland do to solve the population crisis? [101]

They are trying to do it in Hungary now,we will see how that works out.

Well, a good start for Poland would be to introduce universal free child care in the municipality where the child lives from the end of the parental leave. The situation is dire in many areas, particularly with creches, and such universal provision would go a long way to encouraging people to have children.

Add in a good tax cut (say 500zł less income tax per month per child) and you've got something that encourages people to have children while not encouraging the rise of a welfare-dependent class (think about some of the core Labour electorate in England around 2000).

Just to point out: Poland doesn't recognise the 'referendum' in Crimea, the result or the annexation by Russia.

No, they're still there, they just became a bit less seedy. For instance - google.com/maps - right in the centre of Poznań.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

the teachers are not united.

They are! What's actually happened is incredible - Solidarność are normally very disciplined, but individual branches and sections of the union have been making it clear that they will strike regardless of what the central authorities say, and that they will simply leave the union if they get stopped. It's amazing, but from what I'm seeing, teachers are acting as one regardless of which union they formally belong to.

They are trying scum things like offering retired teachers sums of money to invigilate in exams Delph.

They're trying, but as of Friday, they had barely any takers because they don't want to risk crossing the picket line, especially in smaller communities.

But if Solidarity members have agreed to a pay deal, the teachers are not united are they?

No, the union has agreed, the members haven't. Astonishing.

You know, the most interesting thing about this strike is that it's united teachers for the first time in over 25 years. People have truly had enough with the government, and the "cow+" nonsense has just inflamed tempers even more.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

I've just checked, and although the national Solidarność has signed a deal with the government, the individual school branches of the union are rejecting the deal and will strike regardless.

Doug, it's true, but at the same time, I don't think the government will be able to hold out. Parents might be able to take a few days off, but if the exams are conducted by unqualified and inexperienced invigilators, then there will be huge legal problems for the government.

I don't know if that is what a day's salary equates to,

It can be even less. A newly qualified teacher will be lucky to take home 100zł/day.

Thoughts?

I'm 100% behind them. They do a hard job for peanuts, and while I work for a private international school and get paid very well compared to my colleagues in public schools, they should be equally well compensated for the work that they do.

short period of industrial action

Don't be so sure that it will be short. Public opinion is on the side of the teachers, too.
