News / Trams collide at Ul. Hallera junction with Ul. Powstancow, Wrocław [5]

Seems one tram might have hit another at that junction, some people were injured, saw at least one stretchered away. I hope no one was seriously hurt, probably not as the speeds would have been low.

I don't know how it happened as didn't see it, but as someone who regularly travels by tram in that area it was a bit worrying.

Credit to the authorities - they cleared the whole thing up very quickly - in the UK such things rarely get sorted so quickly.

I have the link for the newspaper now, one of the trams derailed, 4 non life threatening injuries. trams 14 and 20 at 7pm.

Love / Best way to find a Polish husband...ideas? [120]

I am surprised that so many people jumped in to give advice and so few commented on such a racist comment.

Sadly, I wasn't surprised. She used that remark in her opening post, and immediately sounded like a big headed loser.

Life / New in Poland! Not yet jaded and loving it [34]

Polish maybe, as they have all assimilated and speak English all the time.

About a quarter of the Poles I met in London/South East did not speak any better English than I speak Polish. Surprising for many Poles that I tell that to here, but true all the same.

As for Post Office queues in the UK - you would be lucky to find a branch where there isn't a queue of about 10 to 20 minutes in England, especially the main branches that issue vehicle licences.

Classic stage one James, long may it last.

A lot of truth in that.

News / Polish newspaper websites to start charging for access in September [9]

Forty-two sites are included in the Polish package, comprising major daily newspapers, magazines, and the Polish National Radio. Among them is Gazeta.pl - the site of leading daily newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza - as well as Forbes.pl, which is putting about 10 percent of its content - mostly commentary and analysis - into the digital kiosk.

Can anyone list one or two Polish news websites that will not be charging for access?

Life / Free Poland Health Care - Paying minimal to no Zus [105]

Further to my posts above and post 42 - best I have come up with so far from a NFZ doctor is

"You need to go to xyz street in Wroclaw and register with the NFZ there by showing them your European proof of entitlement; they will then give you some NFZ paperwork or certificate if you are approved there. Bring that paperwork here and we can register you only then."

Life / Noisy kids every night. Police in Warsaw don't care.. [22]

Ironically the little twits are not out tonight. First night in a couple of weeks there has been quiet.

They obviously read PF !

I think the person said that here in Wroc the SM typically turn up 20 mins after the call but once it took them 45 mins.

I had or have problems with the people upstairs here - remodelling or DIY until 4am on several occasions. Next time I will be calling the police as my polite chats did not really have much effect. Problem is, I know for a fact the owner before the landlord here took them to court in the past for regular party noise - and lost. So the police didn't silence them then, as didn't a court case. Other residents here filled me in on this info after I told them of the noise I suffer.

ndeed. You can't even get through to them most of the time.

We've got constant problems at work with morons who park in front of our gate. A good 50% of the time, the Straz Miejska won't even answer the phone.

I am told by someone who usually criticises the hell out of everything and everyone that the Wroc Straz Miejska turned up each time there were people outside making a noise after 11pm. Their worst response time was 45 mins and 2 calls were made to remind them but after the second call they were there in 10 mins. Problem is the yobs keep coming back again and again.

Life / How much does it cost to live in Poland? [42]

Cheapest prepared soya milk is in Biedronka (availability varies from branch to branch, sometimes it seems to vanish from the shelves for months). 3.99zl 1 litre.

Most of the major supermarkets sell the better known brands for around 6 to 8zl.

You can get powdered soya milk too, works out at around 2zl a litre, from some health shops.

"Oh that window there is where they called the Police on us" and they were all looking at the window as I waved to them. They

Of course, in many parts of the UK they would be shouting up "We're gonna cut ya, innit, you is a dead man innit bruv." The Polish yobs were, by comparison, gentlemanly.

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Wyke Farms' Extra Mature Cheddar

I sometimes see them in Wroclaw - maybe at Tesco Bielany or EPI. Too dear for me.

C/City mature and mild cheddar spotted in the aisle chiller at Tesco, Wroclaw's Magnolia Park too. But no Tesco UK Fairtrade teabags there...

I dont believe that, can anybody else clarify? Thats like a bread shop that stopped selling doughnuts.

I confirm the branches I know of now only have a small section of milk and it's just the 2% (which I presume is semi-skimmed) in plastic bottles with orange or yellow caps. There is not any other fresh milk for sale in the branches when last I checked. I also give their natural set yogurt a miss.

Life / Noisy kids every night. Police in Warsaw don't care.. [22]

I am a veteran of sleepless nights due to the people upstairs who the former owner tried to get evicted, even took them to court, lost. I just rent here thankfully. Currently quieter here as main culprit is abroad. Not total peace but better than usual, I wish you success, being kept up for hours is no joke night after night, even worse if a person has a job the next day which fortunately or unfortunately I don't as no one here will employ me anyway :o)

Would the Straz Mieska be worth a call?

An acquaintance here tells me they respond efficiently more times than not to external nuisance noise, turning up in 30-45 mins.
However, the problem recurs and the SM seem to be limited to just coming out again and again reactively.

Travel / New rule if you board a train without a ticket in Poland [24]

Bingo -have a look at this -

I recall the posters on the train said something about an extra payment per month and you get some sticker to put on your Urbancard to allow travel on that new train (the railbus) but I clarified it with one of the conductors via my Polish companion and the conductor clearly quoted me a reduced fare for the Urbancard being utilised as far as some place beginning with P on that route, Padowice or some such, the last part of Wroclaw. So, instead of paying 15zl I would have only had to pay I think it was 5zl each way - if he was correct. However, the other 2 sources (ticket office and conductor on the return) said nie to that.

(My Urbancard is the outlying areas one that allows travel on the Express and Suburban 6xx routes etc as well as the City lines btw.)

Travel / New rule if you board a train without a ticket in Poland [24]

Thanks for the additional info, I didn't know all that stuff.

Just off on a tangent, ticket office at the train station said my Wroclaw Urbancard was no good for travel, so I paid full fare. Conductor on the outbound said it was good as far as the last part of Wroc and I only need pay for stations beyond. Conductor on the return said the Urbancard was not valid on any part of the journey and the ticket office were correct to charge me full fare. I don't know who is correct but perhaps if 2 out of 3 say the Urbancard is not valid, then that is the answer.

Travel / New rule if you board a train without a ticket in Poland [24]

You now have to use the first passenger/public door of the train (presumably nearest the driving cab) and stand there and wait for the conductor to sell you a ticket which will cost 8zl extra than at the train station ticket office.

If the station has no ticket office, then the 8zl does not apply.

If you take a seat on the train without a ticket, I think it says you get fined and pay an extra 120zl to 150zl.

I don't know what you're supposed to do if you see no conductor at the door or there's no room at the door to stand and wait for a conductor. Whistle?

I am not sure you can board any train in Poland without a ticket and expect to pay aboard it - I always thought it was some routes only or where there is no ticket office at the station you join from.

Life / How much does it cost to live in Poland? [42]

Who drink that 2% milk stuff anyway?

I might get hunted down and shot by the dairy people, but I would have thought that you have to add more to your tea or coffee if the fat content is lower, so you end up using more of the milk to get the same whitening effect, and get through the milk quicker. I would think the 2% is only of use for making milkshakes or hot chocolate etc. I could be wrong of course, but that's how it seems to me.

Are you obsessed milk drinkers?

Er, nope we're not, Pawian, but British people drink tea (and coffee) with milk, remember?
Yes we're not all milkshake freaks or incessantly churning out our own home made yogurt to rival Jana's or Zott's! :o)

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

If I buy it would be for myself and for long-term, eg 10 years or more. I split my time between the UK and Poland. Some of the areas I thought were better, eg Oporow, don't seem that good. The leafy streets and large houses and decent blocks still suffer from yobs walking through them boozing in the evenings, dodgy looking characters here and there, low flying aircraft noise several times an hour when I was walking about. Yet the prices, well sit down and have a brandy.

NBP chief said Zloty is weakening, causing inflation. That might mean they won't cut interest rates as a cut further weakens usually.

Normal, bog standard milk in a supermarket (without any marketing gimmicks) is about 2PLN.

In Kaufland, Biedronka and probably Lidl, 2% fat is probably about 2ZL or 1.99zl. Elsewhere, nearer to 2.50zl for a litre. Typical local supermarket, definitely north of 2zl for a bottle of 3.2% milk, probably 2.30zl to 2.50zl at the majority of places.

Life / How much does it cost to live in Poland? [42]

In Wroclaw, 1200PLN plus bills and apartment block service or monthly charges is the minimum really. Most of them are 1500PLN plus those other costs.

Bread - Tesco do some special deals of around 1PLN for a white loaf. However, that is just a promotional thing and more generally a decent loaf of bread will cost nearer to 3PLN to 4PLN or above. Very ordinary white bread 2PLN to 2.50PLN, yes, not too difficult to find at that price.

Milk - plastic bag refills of milk are 1.80PLN to 2PLN, but more generally milk is around the 2.5 to 3PLN mark. The better filtered milk 3.5PLN for a litre.

A kilo of peaches is 5PLN to 8PLN. For large ones, I paid 7.50PLN per kilo in the market yesterday. Produce is cheapest in season of course. Apples are around 4 to 5PLN a kilo right now. In the next month or so they will probably be 3PLN a kilo.

Clothes, electricals, cars, medicines - not so cheap. Fuel and utilities ditto. I think these are the same price or higher than the UK.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

:o) But on the whole, prices do not seem (as yet at least) to be doing very much (in Wroclaw). If it's going down, it's a gentle slide so far. I think it's safe to say at the moment they're certainly not rising. It is the summer and some would say wait until the autumn before getting any gauge out.

You're right, but no I don't drive here as I prefer not to. There are places on the tram line or bus for 4750 apparently, probably they'd take an offer as they aren't going like hot cakes. Whether they'd go sub 4K is doubtful however. I'm not crazy about the location they're built at tbh.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

50 - 60 m2 3- 4 rooms is always going to be in demand in Poland and therefore will carry a price premium in good locations and have good liquidity.

I think they were 2 rooms and from 5500, didn't seem that cheap - but then I thought property wasn't cheap in the London in 2005...and now look at it.

You sure are determined to get ripped off, i'll give you that.

I did say I am discouraged, but someone who knows the area well might say 5500 was a discount for the part of Wroc it's in. I am hoping to not pay more than 3800 m2 in Wroc. If things get properly choppy, that will seem high too.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Secondly, Residential real estate in Poland no longer has the same allure for investors.

Should be an interesting time ahead, I am still renting but will start to search the for sale properties again soon. Was discouraged by an ad on one of the newspaper websites for property here at 5500PLN m2 - not much of a bargain, although perhaps the same plot would have been 7000 a year or two ago.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

A bit off topic for this thread and according to all the doomsayers, nobody will be able to afford to go there on their 1200 PLN a month salaries.

Or if apartment prices do indeed fall further from here, the [o[ulation might have more disposable income?
Alternatively, if Poland booms - then apartment prices will not fall much perhaps, and the population will also have more disposable income?
Final thought on this, if Poland's population get less disposable income, will they reduce their spend and holiday locally (the Staycation syndrome)?

Do all theme parks do very well, the ones that get built and not abandoned mid-way? Didn't EuroDisney struggle when it first opened? Seems it's struggling again.

Law / Rights of a consumer when dealing with faulty goods in Poland? [65]

If you have space for messages and it is still not working, Orange may try sending you a message to reconfigure your phone - if it can get through, They will advise further or ask for the phone to be returned for repair which may or may not be chargeable - check before you send the phone.

The faulty product was given back to the shop for "service" (serwis) over 4 weeks ago.

The manufacturer said they received the item in mid July.

No one has contacted me and the item is either still with the manufacturer's repair department or in transit.

So much for the 14 days rule !

Will avoid that shop for any future purchases, they suck big time.

You might have used up all your text message storage space. Try deleting some messages and see if things start to work again. Or it could be the message centre network access number has become corrupted and needs to be reconfigured.
