Travel / Poland Travel and Language Blogs [22]

I have started a small blog about Warsaw and would like some feedback on the concept.

Hello, looks fine, a little colourless but I guess that was your intention.

I am not very familiar with Warsaw, so I would like to see, restaurants, theatres, sightseeing, museums, art galleries, etc?

Also the 'Warsaw Aerial Photography 1935 & 1945 in Google Earth' is the only thing you show in arts and history. perhaps show more?
I don't have google earth, my computer is dying and crashes when I install it but I say some aerial video of Warsaw on EuroNews, showing the devastation of WWII, is that what you are showing? If so, I'd love to see it and will try using another computer in the near future.

News / New cross war in Warsaw [530]

I have avoided this issue like the plague, I turn over the radio when they talk about it and flick quickly if there's a newspaper in sight.

But it is late on a Sunday, so I will ask.
So what if they want the cross, why not just leave it be?

UK, Ireland / The slow, whiny death of British Christianity [86]

First its opponents were burned, then jailed, then shunned.

You'd think they would stop after they were burned.

Britain, is now the most irreligious country on earth.

Naw, really?
I doubt that, what about the Netherlands?

Britain is 8th place in this pole:

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

I know that sounds lame but it's the way I consider (as a polish native) such language structure... it's like a shortcut, you just drop the first part of sentence.

I used to think of czy as a useless word, kind of like the auxiliary 'do' but only used for questions and now I try not to think of it at all... :) but Okay, I see where you are coming from.

yes. :)

unless you want to castrate the poor guy ;D

Ouch!
That is many men's idea of hell, all those women and no toy to play with.

But back on topic, would it change the verb? :)

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

whether = if = czy

but if means also jeśli (or jeżeli) that's why I used word whether.

Not always though.

Czy masz papeirosy?

One thing though is, "czy" always makes the sentence a question.

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

If there is a mixed gender group (men and women together) we use male form.

Although I have learned a lot of Polish through humour, one I will always remember is asking a friend, if there were a million women on an Island it's 'były' but if you just put one man, it all changes to 'byly'.

She replied, "Well of course a million women on an island and then along comes one man, it would change everything". :)

there is also gender information in thsese forms:

Sex, sex, sex, that's all Polish people ever think about, your language proves it.

How can 'a glass' = 'szklanka' be female????
Answers on a postcard.

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

i think i got my message

This is why it is important to learn the verb conjugations.

Otrzymał the 'eś' at the end of the word tells you who the person is.
It isn't 'I' but 'you'.

I got = Otrzymałam

you got = Otrzymał

he got = Otrzymał

she got = Otrzymała

It got = Otrzymało

we got = Otrzymałyśmy

you (plural) got = Otrzymałyście

They got = Otrzymały

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

do the same rules apply for asking a 'does' question not a 'do' question
like

Yes, ''do'', ''did'', ''does'', ''doesn't'' in this context are all the same, they are being used as auxiliary verbs and should not be directly translated.

Only if you use 'do' as a verb, like ''to do something'' or ''to make something'', it is 'Robić'.

That is why I recommend not using 'do' to form questions.

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

if i wanted to say
did you get my message
czy zrób mój wiadomość

This is a good example of how 'do' is an auxiliary verb and only makes the tense.

(The verb 'to do' is different that is where 'Robić' comes in.)

I usually try to translate direct from Polish (this is where it helps to know other languages)
so:
Czy gotyou my message?

Czy dostałeś moją wiadomość?

A good thin to learn are the verbs conjugation.

I received,
You received,
he/she/it received
We received
You (plural) received
They received

They are crucial to understanding Polish.

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

but i domread and write hebrew, ancient greek, i am playing with hyroglyphics, and latin.

Oh, I don't speak or read or write any of those languages.
But I do speak other languages (none-Slavic) and it helps to think in those terms.

but polish is what i speak most of, cause my cousins are polish and i am going there in three weeks.

Cool, let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

There is quite a useful thread on here Collection of learning resources for learning the Polish language.

where does czynić fit.

i never use it, it's an old fashioned word.
Use 'Robić' it means 'to do' and 'to make'.

Do you speak any other languages chaza?

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

do i need to hold that.

Muszę to trzymać
(with the meaning of 'Is it necessary for me to hold that?')

do i know you.

znam cię?
(note there are two different forms of "to know")

do i go this way.

Powinien iść tędy
(with the meaning of 'should I go that way?')

"Czy" doesn't really mean anything*, but it makes questions.

Useful thing to note.

Language / "do I" usage in a question? [50]

its the concept of ' do i' im confused with.

Try not to think of it in that context.
'Do' is an auxiliary verb, that is it helps other verbs form tenses.
basically you are making the mistake of trying to directly translate from English.

That is probably why you are having problems.

Try to translate without using 'do'.

Life / Why Aren't The Shops in Poland Open on Sundays? [82]

Yes i know what breadcrumbs are but are Wroclaw breadcrumbs special?

Not just special but extra special because they are from Wroclaw.

Is Wroclaw the place to go for breadcrumbs in Poland?

You know where bread crumbs come from?
Do you know where in Poland sells bread?

After all, celebrating an army is celebrating those that go to war, i.e government sanctioned murderers.

The 'miracle of Warsaw' was what now?

Isn't today 'miracle of Warsaw' day and the day Mary was taken to heaven when she was asleep, not died but taken to heaven, in her sleep.

Life / Why Aren't The Shops in Poland Open on Sundays? [82]

If I remember correctly, the concept of a holiday, on which even the plebs get a day off, is a recent one.
Since the industrial revolution, when machines took over for humans. Giving us leisure time to walk along the fine parks and maybe read a book before tennis.

Now we are reverting back, swings and roundabouts I guess.

Here's a link:

I am just too lazy to look through it, after all today is a holiday :D

my sis never left Poland- she lives there:).

So what the heck would she know? :)

Life / Why Aren't The Shops in Poland Open on Sundays? [82]

That's changing as well. There are more and more places that are open on Sundays.

It's the same in Poland, sure on a typical Sunday everything used to be shut.
Now they have it down to a few days a year and well from there it's easy.

Poland say that there are too many church holidays, national Holidays,

How do Poland's holidays rate against other E.U. countries? I doubt if they have even close to as many holidays as the country with the most. (hmmm if that makes sense I have the number for a good doctor:)

I think people just complain more about Poland on here.

It's a feckin huge issue when the shop had no signs telling us it was gonna be closed and an even bigger issue when this irishman doesn't get his sunday morning breakfast

I remember it used to be similar in Ireland.

even if there wasn't a law forcing them to close

There is no law forcing them to close every Sunday.

Shops are closed today: Assumption Day and for Independence day, constitution day, Easter, Corpus Christi, Christmas, New Year's Day and All Saints' Day.
I think that's it.

Real Estate / TRESPASSING ON MY LAND IN POLAND....what can i do legally...? [119]

And yes its not in great condition at the moment...

I wasn't havin a go at you but I think if you are to hold on to the place, you should find someone to live in it, while you are not there.

As for people taking the fruit just tell'em to get lost! (stronger language might be necessary but since this is a family website)

I mean realistically what do you expect the law to do? They can't drive around your plot looking for phantom fruit pickers, they could warn a few people off but having someone living there is your best deterrent or bear traps or standing Stalin's daughter up at the aisle.

Well that's my opinion anyway.

Real Estate / TRESPASSING ON MY LAND IN POLAND....what can i do legally...? [119]

A friend will be using the place for a base for his paintballing ( ballpainting ) business , but i suspect he won,t be around the place much in winter....

Why not just sell?
Or try to find someone to live there, a house with noone in it will fall in to disrepair quite quickly, especially given the condition I believe it to be in.

When i confronted the old bat she just smiled and nodded....

Doesn't sound like it worked, bear traps or marry her daughter?

I should not call her the old bat really....she is the same age as me....

but she looks like Stalin....!

I am sure she would much rather be refereed to as Stalin than an old bat, emmm...

Real Estate / TRESPASSING ON MY LAND IN POLAND....what can i do legally...? [119]

This is what worries me....

I thought you were selling up.

Are you not going to have some one live there, to tick the place over, especially during the winter?
Maybe that has nothing to do with what you want.

what'd the auld bat say when you confronted her?
You should promise to marry her daughter and leave her standing at the alter.
Then they'll want nothing to do wif ya!

Life / what is with the blasphemy laws in Poland? [9]

The truth behind the passing of the law in ireland is so that extreme Islamists wont be able to operate in ireland anymore, as they have been in the past.

Actually, if you look at the link I posted, the opposite is true.

Now Pakistan and a group of Islamic states (the Organization of Islamic Conference, or "OIC") is using the language of the Irish blasphemy law to press the UN Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of Complementary Standards to recognize the so-called "defamation of religions" as a new normative principle of international law.

centerforinquiry.net/blogs/entry/pakistan_pushes_irish_blasphemy_law_language_at_the_un/

ah the irish thing it just there to cover their arses, it hasn't been enforced and judges will be allowed to interpret the law as they see fitting.

It's not as big a deal as people make it out to be.

It's a farce, it makes Ireland look like a stupid and backward country.
Unless you can prove how it "cover their arses"?
