Life / Could Poland become an immigrant country? [42]

And that, dear PF forumers, is how you protect yourself from infiltration by the barbarian hordes; build a barrier, a language barrier.

Good luck with that, because the immigrants don't need Polish. Just look at the Algerian or Turkish ghettos in Paris or Berlin. Third or even fourth generation immigrants, and they still don't speak the local language properly. They don't need to find jobs outside their neighborhoods because they are hired by their fellow ethnic Algerians or Turks. Simple as that, and the ghettos are a breeding ground for crime.

Genealogy / Baranowo Parish Records after 1902 [14]

Couple of questions:

- which Baranowo? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baranowo
- catholic, protestant or Jewish?
- what family name?

Life / Could Poland become an immigrant country? [42]

why would they?

Because even the poorest, most backward place in Poland is a paradise compared to some of the hellholes those migrants come from?

History / How I blew a 6 figure grant for my charity because of my appreciation of Polish history... [77]

Paulina, I couldn't find anything about mass rape in the source you've mentioned. Just this paragraph:

Quote:
"While accounts of mass rape provoked at most a mild rebuke from their conversation partners, a number of soldiers clearly still felt that the sexual violence at times reached a limit which should be respected, even in the locker-room environment of the POW camp."

Russians say the result was the revenge done by Soviet troops in Germany.

That was probably one factor, plus the fact that violence against civilians - and here especially women (Russian, Polish and German mainly) - was tolerated by the Soviet leadership for far too long.

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

It is not about individuals but about a system they put in place and they have after all children ready to step into their shoes.

IMO, it's up the the Polish voter to destroy such a system of cronyism in elections.

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

problem of Poland is that the country has great potential but it cannot be realized due to Soviet elite ruling her.

Sooner or later, the old commies will die off and many of the Poles who currently work abroad will return home with fresh ideas and money. I believe that that's the time when Poland will change significantly and have the chance to show its real potential. Hopefully...

Sooner than you expect but keep holding on to your outdated stereotypes if it makes you feel better of yourself.

Well, wishful thinking doesn't really help, does it? The reality is that economically and politically, Poland is (currently) not important in Europe or on the world stage. Why claim something else? It takes time to change that.

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

Maybe a little bit, but you tell me in what field I underestimate Poland. If you've ever lived in Europe, you would know that most people in the west still equate Poland with Romania or Bulgaria, and not with Spain or Italy (and definitely not with Britain, France or Germany). At the moment, the country is a provider of cheap and educated labor for the economic powerhouses of the world, and as such it has no economic or political punch whatsoever. Meathead said Poland should show some leadership, but leading whom if no one really cares what you have to say or doesn't take you serious? Give Poland some time. Maybe in 20/30 years the country can take over a more prominent role in Europe, but not now.

Poland should show some leadership and quit being Germany's poodle.

You completely overestimate the importance of Poland (economically and politically) within Europe.

here is a case of genuine claim to payment

You mean 'outlandish claim' - made by some nutjob politicians in Poland.

Fail. Kettle logic. Like I said bro, don't try this type of silliness on me.

Don't play stupid, man. If you don't understand that it is a waste of time to explain the international obligations of Poland to a bunch of PiS faschos, then you are much more ignorant than I thought.

This dispute has been settled by YOUR government 10 years ago,

You are talking to the wrong guy, sledz. I agree with you 100% - this whole thread is a bad joke.

Why don't you show us the actual terms of settlement?

Why don't you study the agreements of the Two Plus Four Conference instead? And while you're at it, also read about the 1953 treaty between Poland and the GDR, and the Warsaw Treaty of 1970. WW2 is over, get used to it.

Do these calculations on quantum include a percentage increase for loss of opportunity arising from these assets being stolen/destroyed, as well as interest?

All this talk about reparations is pure nonsense and helps no one.

Quote: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_reparations_for_World_War_II#Poland
"In 2004 the Polish and German governments declared the issue settled."

If we counted for our exploitation of 123 years the invoice would be several trillions

Tell me more about the poor Polish slaves who had to work in the sugar cane and cotton fields of their Prussian and Russian masters.

Germany should have to pay at least one trillion dollars of total compensation material and immaterial for all losses of war to Poland

I demand that Poland pays at least one trillion dollars to Russia, Austria and Germany for all the assets that ended up in its hands after WW1... ;)

Genealogy / Help required 1910 birth certicate (Golasiewicz) [6]

Why complicated? The baptism record for Jozef Golasiewicz is on film number 2065067, Item 1. You order that film in your local family history centre, and once it has been delivered from Salt Lake City, you are able to take a copy of the original churchbook entry. The latter will usually give you the name of the parents, name of witnesses, time and place of birth, and some other information. Once you know the name of the parents you can go back approx. 20 years (depending on whether Jozef was the first child of the couple or not) and look for their marriage record. That one should either be on film number 2065067, Items 2 - 3, or film number 948568 - provided that the bride came from the same parish as the groom. The marriage record gives you the names of the spouse's parents, and you can go from there.

You can find your nearest family history center here: familysearch.org/locations

Quickly searched for the civil registration records for Proskau. It seems the ones that are relevant for your research were destroyed during the war, as the state archive in Opole (which is in charge here) has only the records from 1874 through 1904 on file.

genforum.genealogy.com/poland/messages/40164.html

EDIT: In the previous message I wrote 'go back 20 years'. That's of course wrong. It must read 'one year or more'. 20 years would be for the grandparent of Jozef.

I just checked the LDS database. They have the catholic church books for 1757 through 1958, so you could order the relevant microfilms in your local family history center. Regarding the civil registration records, you will need to find out in which state archive they are available.

News / Poland's population on the rise [24]

Increased death rate and increased emigration where Poles give up their passports. First one is unlikely, the second one I don't know - at least not for the time before 1989. Do you know whether Poland counts its expats which are still Polish citizens but have lived abroad for an extended period of time?

Something is not quite right here. If there was a baby boom over the course of several years, the overall demographic chart should show a spike, but it doesn't.

News / Poland's population on the rise [24]

I don't see a baby boom in that curve; just a constant growth of the population.

Anyway, I would be interested in some statistics that doesn't include the Poles who are living abroad at the moment. Would we still see a population growth at home?

There was a huge baby boom a few years ago.

When? Since 1995 the population seems to be decreasing: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Poland-demography.png

Born on 23/10/1910 in Proszkow

Search for the civil registration records of Proskau. If they survived the war it's easy to obtain them. Either via the LDS or one of the Polish archives.

Life / Do Polish people like Turkish people? [66]

Poles have not forgotten this.

Sure... :)

Poles have more in common with noble Turks than they do with Germanic scumbags.

Why don't we send all those noble Turks/ Kurds from western Europe over to Poland then? Do you actually have an idea how many problems the Turkish population of Europe is causing in their host countries?

News / Poland's population on the rise [24]

Poland's economy has done very well compared to it's neighbors in the past several years. The population rise is not surprising as couples would feel more secure about their future and having the means to raise children.

Increasing wealth and women having their own career are usually factors that are responsible for postponing parenthood and a low birth rate. Must be something else in Poland - my guess would be religious reasons or favoring a more traditional lifestyle compared to the west.

Life / Grass is always greener? Poland experience. [69]

If you actually understood Poland, you'd know that Poles feel that they deserve this money.

They deserve the money? Based on what? WW2 and the commie era? Playing the world's saddest song on the world's smallest violin... . As if anybody outside of Poland cares - and I don't mean that in a derogatory way.

foreigners robbing us blind and repeating like a mantra that they are giving us something.

Then don't take the money/ investments, and let's see what happens.
