Study / SWPS university Warsaw - questions [43]

What Harry meant is that they may prefer candidates from western universities over polish. But I would be more optimistic. With good grades from Warsaw University you should get into Master Studies somewhere in the countries mentioned.

Work / EU Blue Card for Poland. Which salary is needed? [47]

You're right.
forummigracyjne.org/files/223/ulotka_niebieska_karta_engOK.pdf

Regulated Professions
In Poland, over 350 professions are
regulated. In order to take up one
of them, a person is legally required
to have special qualifications.

Required Earnings
In order for a foreigner to be
granted the Blue Card, his annual
gross remuneration based on
the employment contract may
not be lower than the minimum
remuneration set out in the
Regulation of the Minister of
Internal Affairs.

Type of Contract
In the case of applications for the
Blue Card, only employment based
on employment contract is accepted.
Other forms of employment
(contract of mandate, contract to
perform a specific task) do not entitle
a person in question to apply for that
card.

Btw. this page has many important for foreigners information:

For example how to get citizenship, how to get work permit etc.

USA, Canada / Would like to move back to Poland from New York after living in USA for 20 years. [155]

@ FUZZYWICKETS: you're right my search was too fast and thus incorrect. The link I provided quotes median salary of average worker. But I missed that it's NET.

So, because I cannot fast find median salary for doctors in USA I will use this information about average salary, which between all population is substantially higher than median.

"An average annual income for a MD Family physician in the United States ranges from $123,347 - $178,661 per annum"

healthcare-salaries.com/physicians/medical-doctor-salary-md

so let's take around 150 000 USD

Also it's not so easy to find median annual earnings gross, but average for USA is around $54,450

150 000 / 54 000 = 2.8 times

Amount quoted here is also not sure, because other sources show much lower amount of polish doctor earnings. [wprost.pl/ar/170999/Pokaz-lekarzu-ile-masz-na-koncie/] - They took results from pools made in 384 hospitals.

GUS in 2010 wrote that median salary in Poland was 3500pln per month gross.
"Przeciętne miesięczne wynagrodzenie ogółem brutto w październiku 2010 roku wyniosło 3543,50 zł."

While here (2010) they write that median salary of specialized doctor is only 4000 - 5300 pln per month

"w Polsce mediana wynagrodzeń lekarzy I stopnia wynosi 4.000 zł miesięcznie (a więc mniej niż kelnerów lub pomywaczy w USA), a lekarzy II stopnia 5.350 zł. "

Differences are too huge to have any conclusions.

USA, Canada / Would like to move back to Poland from New York after living in USA for 20 years. [155]

Median salary in Poland is 3000pln/per month. More than 50% of doctors earns above 15 000 pln per month. (in 2009)

840 thousand . zł for an annual contract for the doctor ? Yes, so much that he had not in Poland, but the Polish doctors wishing to work in the United Arab Emirates. In our country , however, already 30 percent . doctors earn more than 20 thousand . zł per month, and 55 per cent . - More than 15 thousand . zł . On the one hand , however, you can count the hospitals where basic pay specialist employed under an employment contract is coming to two national averages - says National Association of Occupational Physicians . Much better to earn contracted physicians . And the best wieloetatowcy - often more than 30 thousand . zł .

And you call 5 x median salary as not good pay? What is relation in USA then ?

Fast google search shows 150 000 per year for doctor and 26 363 for everybody

washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/post/the-median-us-w age-in-2010-was-just-26363-government-reports/2011/10/20/gIQAdabX0L_blog.html

the ratio is 5.7 so around THE SAME. (when taking into consideration data source error)

So wow, American doctors don't earn a lot, neither polish a little. It's proper pay in their economic environment.

USA, Canada / Would like to move back to Poland from New York after living in USA for 20 years. [155]

Doctors are everywhere rich people. Even in Poland with their low salaries, if they're specialists then they work in free time in private clinics or own offices. They make a lot of money in this way. (Nurses and family doctors have harder live however.) Only the smartest can get accepted for public medical studies. Competition is big. The problem is that the most profitable specializations are reserved for people with connections. For the family.

I have heard that the biggest problem of high cost of American health care are high compensations for doctors mistakes, ruled by American courts. That causes doctors to pay a lot for expensive insurances and in the and the patient is paying for it. Although I haven't seen any detail analyses of public care costs to see how big percentage it is in reality.

Study / Public dorms in Warsaw for students [26]

There are dorms in Warsaw. Each belongs to an University, so if you're not a student of Politechnika Warszawska or Uniwersytet Warszawski (or other big public Warsaw's uni), then you will not get a place in them. You should ask your school weather they provide something. There is bigger demand than supply for dormitories in Warsaw, because they're cheaper than renting a room on free market. Who will get dormitory is calculated according to algorithm taking into account family earning, distance to home etc.

Links:
portal.uw.edu.pl/web/dla-mediow/stypendia

Prices in UW dorms:
o Dom Studenta nr 1 "Muchomorek"- 290, 360 lub 450 zł,
o Dom Studenta nr 2 "Żwirek" - 290, 360 lub 450 zł,
o Dom Studenta nr 3 "KIC" - 280, 340 lub 380 zł,
o Dom Studenta nr 4 "Zamenhof" - 460 lub 560 zł,
o Dom Studenta nr 5 "Smyczkowa" - 340 lub 390 zł,
o Dom Studenta nr 6 "Radomska"- 430 lub 445 zł.

Politechnika:
int.pjwstk.edu.pl/doc/lista.htm
ds1.uw.edu.pl/ds/doku.php?id=zdjecia

Dorms differs a lot according to standard. There are some new apartments with shared kitchen between 2 rooms and there are old block flats with small 14m2 rooms and 3 students in it and 1 kitchen and 1 bathroom per 13 rooms (13*3 = 39 people) floor. There is always option to pay more and share room with only 1 person or live alone.

What not to do... Don't say that you don't like vodka. What to do... When you for the party bring beers or vodka.

General experience is only positive.

I've seen your other topic where you write that you Alma Mater is Vistula. And I don't see anything about dorms on their website. Ask them about accommodation and read perhaps this:

kierunek-warszawa.pl/2013/01/jak-znalezc-mieszkanie-w-warszawie.html

I am not from Warsaw, but fast googling gave me result about private dorm:

The price depends on the number of people in the room and its size and ranges from 590 PLN to 750 PLN per 1 person (no extra charge!). The rooms are for 2-4 persons

Study / Tell me about Collegium Civitas (Warsaw)! [34]

That's true that private universities are more savy for money from foreign students. Public have public founding, so don't need foreigners as long as can attract enough locals.

This Collegium Civitas is only in top of rankings which are excluding all public universities. And there is many public schools in Poland.

Here is some general ranking top 50 of all kind colleges/universities, by prospect of getting job in Poland by graduates:
szkoly.wprost.pl (no C Civitas there)

Here another one by salaries of graduates:

For the tenth time we have the pleasure to present to you a summary of the National Research Compensation ( MC ) . In 2012, attended by over one hundred thousand people ( 114 718 ), which makes it the largest non-governmental study of wages in Poland . Present you as accurate data on earnings of Poles was made possible through collaboration with leading Polish Internet portals : pracuj.pl , interia.pl , gazetapraca.pl , wp.pl.

As every year, we recall that in our study is dominated by young people ( 64.9 % have no more than 35 years ) and those with higher education ( 75.0 %). This makes our respondents take more specialized positions, and their salaries are higher than those of other people. The main advantage of such a group structure is that with much greater accuracy from other sources as we can give shape to pay for most of the specialist positions. It should also be noted that, compared to traditional studies of wage OBW contains data from employees with over 20 000 companies . It is also the only commercial survey including data on wages for each province and most of the districts. In addition, the only information we have on wages for 567 positions.

(they haven't bother to check salaries of private schools graduates)

And in the end all this rankings matters only in Poland, because in the west maybe somebody has heard about Uniwersytet Warszawski or Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, but probably nothing else and the reputation of country is rather low.

So I don't say that you will have bad experience with Collegium Civitas, only that it's not elitist school.

Maybe it's not the worst university in Poland. But generally smarter students are in public universities here. And when it's about studying in Europe. Poland is new poor member of EU and Polish diploma in richer western countries is not worth more than a diploma from India. So If you plan to work in India later and you think that Polish education will be valuable there then it's OK, but If you want to work in the west then it's not the best idea. (As for Poland we have very little jobs for foreigners, except if you intend to study IT)

" And there is the DOUBLE TAXATION (tax paid on top of your taxed income), for instance in the form of the omnipresent state tax (8.75% in NY, 7% in NJ) every time you buy an item (price says $0.99 - you pay $1.08 at the cashier) "

Are you talking about Sales tax? 7% is very little, when in Europe its 19%-23% VAT in most of countries.

Work / Dental Student moving with wife to Poland, how difficult will it be for her (IT degree) to find employment? [10]

The most important question is weather she's going to get work permit. If not, then it won't be easy to find a company which will apply for visa for IT graduate.

If work permit is not a problem, then Warszawa, Karków and Wrocław have the biggest number of IT jobs. Poznan is close after these cities. So if you want to increase her chances of getting a job in Poland, try studying there.

If work permit is not a problem, then she will definitely find a job.

There are people working online for American companies from Poland, because in this way salary can be double of what is offered in Poland. But it's good for people with experience. But as an last resort she may be freelancer for American companies. Then work permit is not needed.

I am wondering how Gross -> Net salary is calculated in USA. Google result of search for Gross Net calculator is:
secure.gtmassociates.com/calculator.aspx

does it take into account all costs with retirement found and medicare as is for example in UK? I am asking, because it looks like taxes in USA are higher than in UK (for 50 000 euro annual income) according to this website. Or maybe it looks like that, because American Gross is real gross, while in Europe employer pays extra taxes above the Gross salary.

And of course America is not so bad, when you read stories of people who could save enough to retire in their 30'. It's life style which makes people belief that big house car etc. are something basic.

Real Estate / Warsaw studio apartment for 146K? [5]

Naturally it's one of the cheapest capitals in Europe, because there is strong correlation between GDP per capita and apartment prices (with exceptions like Beijing).

globalpropertyguide.com/investment-analysis/London-and-Monaco-are-Europes-most-expensive-cities-for-residential-property-buyers

- it's seriously outdated (pre crisis prices), but it can give you a little bit idea about ranges of prices.

USA, Canada / Would like to move back to Poland from New York after living in USA for 20 years. [155]

Chicago-Girl: now compare all what you wrote with information that median net salary per month in big polish city is around
650 euro per month (10 000 USD per year net) and 2 rooms apartment prices starts from 300 - 500 euro (depending on city).

People in USA at least have salary to pay this high bills. Your mother here probably wouldn't be treated at all, because hospitals don't use modern cancer treatment. Which is better? You're showing many prices, but they're meaningless without comparing them with American salaries.

In USA studies can be expensive, but in Poland 50% of people age 25 - 35 graduated, so for many of them there is no graduated job, so are in worse situation than if they have had learned some profession instead.

Just to let you know I live in Chicago, my income from age 23-30 has been 60k-100k, with my significant other making 40k-70k and we still cannot get by!

- then what makes you think that you could make it in Poland?

Law / Does Poland acknowledge Malaysian and Japanese driving licences? [3]

Not EU driving licenses must be changed to Polish after 6 months of staying in Poland if they're from country which signed this convention:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Convention_on_Road_Traffic

Other are not valid here, so only option is to get in home country International Driving License which is valid in Poland for touristic use (I guess up to 6 months).

Or get Polish driving license replacement.

And here is list of countries which signed Vienna convention:

treaties.un.org/pages/ViewDetailsIII.aspx?&src=TREATY&mtdsg_no=XI~B~19&chapter=11&Temp=mtdsg3&lang=en

No Japan or Malaysia there.

"So the fact that UW ranks somewhere in the top 500 holds no water for me, especially if you are referring to the Shanghai Rankings which have been criticized for the methodology employed."

UW is in top 500 of all 3 rankings and every ranking is criticized.

Sad truth is, that for many job positions in Poland graduates of private schools are not even invited for interviews.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

"The problem is that they didn't do any of this stuff in the beginning - it's very much a reaction to the behaviour of Greece towards them. The more that Greece acted like a spoilt child, the more that they built up the cult of Alexander which strengthened their sense of nationhood. Entirely normal."

you have strange perception of normality

"Of course, the real reason for the Greek problem with Macedonia has everything to do with Greece and her support of Serbia..."

You are saying that Greeks argue about the name Macedonia because of Serbia? Why not because of Germany?

wikipedia: "The name of the Macedonian language is a matter of political controversy in Greece[10] as is its distinctiveness compared to Bulgarian in Bulgaria."

Quarrel weather it's dialect or not has no sense. Enough to say that it's nearly the same language. And weather it has different name or is called dialect it's only political matter.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

look at wikipedia. Geographical region of Macedonia comprises northern part of Greece, Republic of Macedonia and western Bulgary. Alexander the Great was Greek in the way that he was speaking Greek. There was no country called Greece in hist time, but smaller "kingdoms", so you cannot say that he was Greek nationality (term invented much later). Centuries after his death Slavs came to the territory of geographical Macedonia. Later Byzantium (Greek part of Roman empire) ruled this land, then Turkish came and ruled, then during soviet times was Yugoslavia there. Finally after wars in Balkan people who live in Republic of Macedonia decided to create their nation. And they tough, aha, here was living here 2000 years ago famous Alexander the Great. Let's say that we are his descendents. Doesn't matter that out language is Bulgarian, that we are Slavs and that Macedonia is administrative district of northern Greece.

But you understand little wrong. Republic of Macedonia doesn't occupy it's territory. It belonged to Greece centuries ago. No need to change borders again. People living there could be living there since generation. Just when they immigrated, the place was under other rule.
