PISA examines 15-year-old students' capabilities in reading,

this means nothing. a few months ago i was reading about brits who are low on the list of required reading, but top of the list for non-required reading.

Life / The Polish people have a strange attitude to cats and dogs? [84]

but many of them don't want to use it.

for some the shame of accepting charity is to big a burden.

They had a choice when they reached for the first bottle of vodka.

i don't think anyone makes an active choice to be an alcoholic.

my last dog was certainly more important to me than some people. she was certainly better than some of the scum she protected me from.

Life / Why Poland is "surprised" by winter and snow every year? [192]

uk.news.yahoo/22/20101205/tts-uk-weather-poland-deaths-ca02f96.html

Five Poles died from exposure to cold overnight, bringing the death toll to 52 since the start of the cold weather season last month, the Government Security Centre said Sunday.

Work / If you were to compere Polish Unis and Unis/Colleges in your country... [75]

Are all American, British and German unis so good or it also happens that some college or faculties don't come up to the (student's, market's, standard's) expectations?

i know and have known plenty of Polish students who have an arrangement to go abroad.
i'm thinking of those students who don't have access to certain equipment etc.
these students might be at the higher level.

so, other unis have better equipment, which makes studies easier.
the students have more free will and can argue against the professors book.

Life / Why Poland is "surprised" by winter and snow every year? [192]

this from the BBC website:

Temperatures in Poland have fallen to as low as -33C (-27F) in the past few days.

Another 12 people froze to death across Poland on Thursday night, according to police, bringing the total killed there during this cold snap to 30.

Police say many of the victims were homeless people.

Around 150,000 people in the Polish city of Czestochowa were reported to be without heating on Friday.

Life / Please read this blog about our Poland and post your opinions [5]

it opened for me and here is a part of it... in english

The latest havoc do with the cross was a national embarrassment for all of Poland. It shows how a lot of our people are still preventing much needed development and progress by being stuck in a stage or religious fundamentalism. This incident had brought to my attention how everyday life is affected by this notion that the church is the most important thing.

i think i've been misunderstood.

folks here keep a set of tyres in the garage and change them over at the beginning of winter.

if the tyres are swapped over year after year at what point do they lose their grip.

Life / Expats in Poland - would you fight for your new country? [105]

read up the light blue army in France during ww1, then later in the Polish fight for independence!

i think you'll find that the reality is that folks will worry about their family at home, but won't be able to do much about it.

I can't imagine Ryanair offering cheap flights home for expat Poles. especially at a time of war.
you might also notice that some of the comments on this thread are by ex-military who suggested they would not fight.
this is no longer the early 1900's. when a country goes to war how many people do you really think would fly home to face mandatory conscription.

there are no rules on the frontline. die for your family... acceptable and honourable. but to volunteer to die for a war that is never likely to happen... foolish.

I don't drive here, no. I've just heard that winter tyres are largely for commercial profits.

if one keeps changing the same tyres there must come a point when old winter tyres, although within the legal limit, are no better than regular tyres.

Life / Why Poland is "surprised" by winter and snow every year? [192]

saw a derailed tram today (number 12 for those who know wroclaw).

i also noticed that it's the traffic that's causing problems for the trams. as cars drive over the points and rails they are forcing ice into the gaps. the tram drivers have to get out and clear the points themselves. although i have seen a crew from one of the depots hard at work cleaning/clearing track/rails/points.

and now that the city president has just secured his third term we can see all that he is doing for the city. exactly the same as last year. nothing. none of the streets or pavements have been cleared in my area... same as last year.

none of the streets or pavements have been cleared in my area..

i take this back. many pavements have been cleared.

-16 according to my yahoo.

Life / Expats in Poland - would you fight for your new country? [105]

asking Brits with Polish citizenship makes more sense, because they would be eligible to fight for Poland.

i would imagine that most eligible ex-brits would be used for other duties like translation of messages etc.

expats would find themselves either sent home or under lock and key. if they helped Poland and their home country won... then God help them.

Expats in Poland - would you fight for your new country?

if the call to arms came, the younger folk would go before me. i'm already past the age of enlistment.
if you asked the question ten years ago i might have said yes. but now half my family don't live in Poland. so, i would simply move out of the war zone to our flat in Berlin.

i did my bit for queen and country through the late 70's and 80's. no more for me, thanks.

Life / Poland's Next Top Model (TV show) [73]

The final.

all the girls are back for this show and some of them look a lot different. they all look good and one wonders why one or two of them were kicked out when they were.

the folks running the show dropped hint after hint that they want Anna to win.

i've always liked Paulina.

my conflict was that Ola is from Wroclaw and i've been rooting for her too.

and the winner is: Paulina

second: Ola

third: Anna

marta, paulina, paulina (again) won incidental prizes.

as reality shows go, this one was actually very good. at least one could learn a little about the industry. be it modeling, photography, make-up, castings and how the business works.
