News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

What is the (polite) polish term for actual russians

Rosjanie

Yes Rosjanie is the correct respectful way of saying Russians. Many Poles don't like it when some Poles through regional dialect (Bialystok, Podhale, Silesia) say Polaki or Poloki as it sounds eastern and not proper Polish, Polacy.

News / Euro 2012: Budget cuts delay road construction in Poland [21]

According to the 2010 budget, road construction expenses were to total zł.38.6 billion in 2011 and zł.33.3 billion in 2012. Daily Rzeczpospolita reports, though, that Warsaw is now looking to cut zł.19 billion from the 2011-2012 budget. It will still be more money spent than ever before just less than hoped.

Kogo_obra za_slo wo__Ruska___Czy_proces_zmieni_ludzi.html

It's a shame what she and her boy went through, I hope she gets the court decision. It isn't just that word but how those simple country people say it, yelling and name calling.

Was it in Poland?
Well, I would say they weren't overreacting. Poles attitude towards Russians and Russia + calling them "Ruscy/Ruski/Ruska" = a very unpleasant mix for Russians.

I have nothing against Russians i have Russian friends i dated a Russian girl few years back, I just said i've never used it offensively nor most people in Poland, it was just an another way of saying Rosjanin, neutral.

Żyd

From what i've heard Żyd is offensive now in Russia. And i did notice twice from Russians when i called them Ruski they got mad, but since i never used it offensively in Poland it was normal to say that, i just figured they're overreacting.

Nope not any more, used to in Stalowa Wola. All i'm saying is I hardly remember anyone ever using the word Rosjanin always Ruski and it wasn't a bad word at all.

Blacks or Arabs getting beat up, people making monkey chants, or white power writen on blocks that's offensive, not being called Ruski a neutral word.

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

A Russian guy posted a link to the article in Polish about it on one blog

Well if they feel like it's offensive maybe they should change it, the Polish word for Gypsy Cygan (same also in Russian) became offensive since Cygan is slang for liar, so they prefer to be called Roma.

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

Sometimes in small-town east Poland it can be used perjoratively against someone

That's only because some Poles are prejudice against Russians and they say Ruski angrily, but this is mostly the older folk or some dimwit. Right guesswho, Kacap is very offensive, funny how a Russian friend of mine explained to me that Kacap (Russian) and Hahol (Ukrainian) come from the hairstyles that men used to have hundreds of years ago like Cossacks with the hair up.

Ruski' are ethnic slurs

That word is neutral not a slur, it's simply an old fashioned way of calling a Russian from when Russia was Kievan Rus

sensitive Polaks?

And in English (once again) Pollack is always offensive, if you're speaking Polish or Russian or some other language where Polak means a Pole then its ok to say it.

News / Y Shaped high speed rail line Poland [78]

Poland will simply not be able to afford such an ambitious project.

They are building it. Start of construction of the first section of the line (Warszawa Centralna - Lodz Fabryczna) is possible at the turn of 2013/2014 and is expected to cost €10 billion. Completion of this section is planned for the year 2016/2017, putting the whole line it is possible to operate according to different specialists by the year 2019 or 2020.

In £ódź itself the line will be a tunnel that will connect the existing railway stations of £ódź Fabryczna and £ódź Kaliska. The £ódź Fabryczna station will be rebuilt - it is planned to be placed completely underground. Commencement of the construction of a new station is scheduled for 2010, and the cost is estimated at around 1.2 billion zlotys.

News / Y Shaped high speed rail line Poland [78]

€8 billion project, around 500 kilometres of tracks
The proposal will be submitted to the whole Polish Government early 3Q 2008, in order to launch the feasability studies. The Infrastructures Ministry plans to finish the preliminary studies by 2010. The Government aims to begin construction by 2014 and complete it in 2019, to start operation by 2020.

The project is evaluated at €8 billion (€6 to €7 billion for construction, and €1 billion for rolling stock), and the proposed Y-shaped-corridor has a main branch from Warsaw to Lodz, and two distinct legs going to Poznan and Wroclaw, respectively at 330 kilometres and 345 kilometres from Warsaw. With 35 trainsets running on the tracks, Minister Grabarczyk expects the trips to last around 1h30 while they are presently around 5h30 and 3h00 ! Also, what the Polish Government wants, is to link the network to the European already efficient high-speed rail network.

Poland will be inviting bids for the rolling stock but Minister Grabarczyk definitely showed his preference for the new 360-kph-French Alstom AGV (entering service in Italy in 2011), even saying that “The AGV doesn’t seem to have any competition.”

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

Sorry, but this is what some Americans might think. Many people around the world see it differently. You wanted to be a dominating power by attacking militarily weak Iraq and look at yourself now

That wasn't Poland's fault

Regarding thinking high of themselves and their culture I doubt that anyone can beat Polish. But it is Ok and it is totally normal to feel proud towards one's culture

Poles don't think they're better than anybody, it's just that Poles constantly have to defend ourselves and correct others who spread lies about us and our country. Poles want people to see us how we really are not what some ignorant a** said. As For Lviv ignorant people should also stop saying it's Polish that's Ukrainian land, our present day borders in the east as well as in the west are correct, two Slavic nations like Poland and Ukraine should definitely be friends. We get along, live together in other countries but can't at home? that seams silly.

It just beats me, delphi, why some Poles like to stir the s*it instead of making one's own country some respectful power in the region.

Don't you know Nathan that a country like Poland with it's geopolitical location can't be neutral, and if a nation doesn't dominate it gets dominated. Poland as one of the largest counties in the region naturally wants to dominate weaker, poorer nations. You think it will let some Czechs for example, who think highly of themselves and their culture dominate or influence a nation 4 times larger.
