News / Is Poland's PO party left or right wing? [15]

Unlike many other European countries the majority in Poland would not support any of the above, the rights and wrongs of this stance will probably be debated for years to come.

Life / Transferring foreign drivers license in Poland [10]

"you haven't seen how people drive in north Africa, or even south Europe..." lol

I have driven in the above countries,/ continents , I used to think the Italian's were bad until i lived in China.

Poland is very similar to China when it comes to being killed on the roads.

After two years in Poland I left our economical family saloon back in the UK I bought a 5 Litre 3 ton 4wd Euro Ncap 5 with 10 airbags.

now I feel safe , I was a qualified advanced driver / rider trainer in the UK but I found that those skills were still not enough to save me from the inevitable accident that is going to befall me in Poland, hence the 3 ton Euro ncap 5 ,,, loonies absolute loonies without a clue.

Stick to the topic please

Sorry mod you are quite right let me re-phrase what I am trying to say,
Do you really want to swap your driving license for that of a country that has a worse death ratio per 100,000 population than lets say Azerbaijan, or Turkey.

Would a Polish driving license give you an advantage to get a job as as a professional driver in Europe?.
When it comes to driving we have a long way to go, and allot to learn in Poland.

Life / The miserable life of retired old pensioners in Poland [10]

"This is probably rose-colored nostalgia"

Not really , The information that I have is first hand from someone who lived through those times.

There were Polish priests and nuns in Africa that cared for my mother when she was sick after she was freed from Siberia , in those days the church did care, they were only people prepared to face hardship and the possibility of their own death in the struggle to help others

For many years in my youth I had lost my faith in the church, It was only until later when I was much older mum explained how during their darkest times in the camps the only thing they had was their faith, this helped me to move my focus to balance between making a living for myself and also having a focus to help others.

The church should as a priority help the poor , for sure from what I see in modern day Poland there is much to do, especially for the elderly, the focus has to change.

" no culture of volunteering or helping the elderly unless they're your own relatives."

This is another thing I don't like about modern day Poland, during the II republic it was common to share what you had with neighbors, my father used to tell me how neighbors would always step up and help if someones crop has failed or the breadwinner of a family was sick, the church did help out in the old days , what has happened to change all this.

Life / The miserable life of retired old pensioners in Poland [10]

It's one of the things I find hard in Poland more needs to be done to improve old age pensions, Even in my local town I see old people selling a few pots of blackberry's and cloves of garlic, I buy whatever I can , even if I don't need what they have to sell, I alone can't fix this and it does not to be on the top of the list on anyone's political agenda.

Life / Why are the lines in supermarkets the slowest and the longest in Europe? Usually only very few employees work [18]

Yep lidl is probably best I agree.

Funny just been out to Biedronka , as usual couldn't get to the chillers for a stack of pallets , potatoes had gone slimy, onions no better really.

One breakthrough a lady on the opposite checkout recognized us and went out of her way to say hello, so off to Lidl tomorrow to get fresh onions potatoes and chilies, for the life of me I don't know why someone would buy slimy onions and potatoes , someone must, they have sacks of them.,

Oh the other trick they have is to peel the slimy skins off the onions and the put them back on the shelf, they are usually still rotten inside the core.

Atch Thank you for your kind words, but my wife would be the first to tell you that I am still prone to some Polish hysteria at times (getting less as I get older).

I must admit if someone started lecturing me about change at the till I would be tempted just walk away leaving all the stuff behind, but my wife would step in and sort me out.

Got to say the supermarket here annoy me.

1. They stack shelves but leave stuff in the middle of the aisle so you cant get past them.

2. Staff pretend to be busy when they need to open a new checkout, you have to shout at them to do it (Works tho)

3. Selling stuff that is out of date, a common practice here.

4. They just throw stuff across the till (sometimes causing damage cakes and stuff) , and don't give you a chance to pack.

5. Always expect you to have loose change, it's their shop,up to them to have cash in tills to run it.

6. When waiting at the fish or meat counter you can be completely ignore by staff if they are gossiping or moving a few thing around.

7. people trying to barge the queue at the meat counter.

Having said the above its no big deal, after all I am in Poland as the locals say, Fair enough I am getting damn good at shouting and barging like a local.

Law / Poland's Laws and Regulations: Health and Safety, Licensing, Crowd Management, etc. [11]

I will give it a go with my limited experience here 3 years.

1. Smoke detectors, very important as i Use Coke coal and wood for heating, you can buy smoke , and carbon monoxide detectors quite cheaply from Tesco.

2. circuit breakers, yes they use them, in Poland you have the star system as opposed to a ring main, the majority of houses do not have rcd's , the use of neutral as earth is quite common, also plenty of older houses use aluminium wiring which is a huge fire risk.

3. Lead in water dunno , I have a well and its never been tested.

4. Everyone burns or buries their garbage in the back garden, cheaper than paying for bin men (I live in a village not the city where it might be hard to bury garbage), also quite common in poland to burn plastic bottles in the fireplace in winter, now that's bad.

5. contaminated food, I have no idea not dead yet after 3 years.

As for regulations, I have never known anyone come round and check anything.

News / How would Poland change for the better (or worse) under a PiS government? [257]

Another day, and at long last a Polish government that is prepared to speak a truth the that has been denied for 76 years.

May those who suffered and died in the genocide in Eastern Galicia and in Volhynia rest in holy peace

The Polish parliament on Friday adopted a resolution declaring 11 July a National Day of Remembrance of Victims of Genocide perpetrated by Ukrainian nationalists against Poles during World War II.

The resolution - backed by 432 deputies, with no votes against and 10 deputies abstaining - refers to the Volhynia Massacre, a black page in Polish-Ukrainian relations.

Nice you have stopped trolling,

Just between us two don't worry too much about Polish politics, more bluster than anything else, one lot gets in then we get bored and vote another lot in then get bored then repeat.

"unfortunately your army was run by old cavalry types. a bit like us in ww1."

Sorry about that twas my granddads fault , after the Bolshevik wars we laid on our laurels and didn't re arm.

Welcome to the UK 1970's, Poland has been a closed country for over 50 years, there is still work to do , love thy neighbor alf garnet and all that.

"you didn't do much fighting in ww2 "

We did our best considering we were one of the first to be hit by the new war tactics of blitzkrieg, we wiped our bloodied noses picked ourselves off the floor ,cracked the enigma machine, showed our skills during the battle of Britain , kicked the sh$t out of the crack nazi paratroopers at casino, landed our tanks in france, did our best (and died) market garden , i could go on. erm Tbruck etc etc..

10iwonka10 we need to add

Anna Grodzka, elected to the Sejm in the 2011 Polish parliamentary elections as a candidate for the left-liberal Palikot's Movement, and was the first openly transgender Member of Parliament

We won't let the trolls here paint Poland as some kind of right wing intolerant society, we as a nation suffered greatly at the hands of the right wing Nazis, we will never forget this legacy , we fought against them in WWII, and we will continue this fight against racial hatred and intolerance.

"exercising more caution than they would back home is appropriate."

Here we agree jon this is true for any visitor to any country in the world, I lived in Texas for six months, merely my display of tolerance at times caused me issues with some of the random lunatics that you would find down the local sports bar.

Poland is no Rhodesia never has been never will be.

More than average in PL. Have you spent much time in Lodz?.

Most UK cities suffer from graffiti also, but they have greater resources to clean it up quickly (Rightly so to avoid riots), Poland suffers from a few random idiots no differently to other European countries.

While we are on the subject of Racist graffiti, there is no greater example than that in the cities of Bristol and Liverpool where all the great municipal buildings are built from the spoils, and cemented by the blood of the slave trade, You will not find this legacy of hate and intolerance in Poland.

So as a Black visitor you are welcome here by the majority of Poles.
