Law / Social money exchange services in Poland? [5]

Have you heard of or even used walutomat.pl? Is it any good and safe? I am wondering if it would be a good thing to use to avoid FX rate losses.

I have heard about it and it presumably has better exchange rates than everybody else (because they don't have to pay cashiers, rents are not affected by physical security issues) - but with everything that is internet there is some risk involved - I would try to inform myself better and still would thouroughly consider giving them a go

Language / New Dialects in Western and Northern Poland [24]

So can be said that people from the western and northern wojewodships are not as attached to their home areas like Poles from "Poland proper" a.k.a. Greater Poland, Lesser Poland or Masowia?

yes, I believe so (and I am pretty sure it shows in various statistics and sociological research)

What about Poland? Can be said that people from small villages in Lower Silesia, Lubusz or Western Pomerania are more mobile than people from Masowia or Lublin?

it's not that straightforward as in Germany after the war - in those Western and Northern territories there used to be numerous state-owned farms (PGR - państwowe gospodarstwo rolne) - statistacally the people who used to work in these state-owned farms and lived in small settlements (estates) in the countryside were initialy not very mobile (with low level of education, significant alcohol issues etc etc, neither were they enterprising) - (mobility issue in Poland was also hugely influenced by massive unemployment - you just stood little chance of finding a job anywhere) - people from eastern and central Poland were comparatively more mobile and more enterprising in those times - since then there has been a generation shift and the new generation are generally more mobile and willing to go where jobs are (including or even preferably abroad) - now the situation may reversed with people in western Poland more mobile

Language / Sorka means przepraszam [17]

- also helps a hell of a lot to understand how some Polish words came about. Thank you! :))

I wonder if you can guess where this word comes from pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulaj

Language / Sorka means przepraszam [17]

It always throws me off since if it were a borrowing from spoken English it should be 'sari' and 'sarka'.

nah, when a Pole says 'sari' (or even 'sary') it doesn't sound like English 'sorry' at all - simply the English vowel in question does not exist in Polish as a phoneme (you should know it, just guess you don't always take it into conscious consideration)

it's very similar as with 'mecz' - we don't have the exact vowel of the 'match' word in Polish - it's just the most best Polish rendering of the English word we came to think of

there is also the attractive approach of taking the graphical representation into account giving rise to words like 'klub' - club (before you criticise Polish for having 'klub' for 'club' just remember that it the same case in German and Czech (I only mention those languages I am aware of having 'klub' for 'club')

Food / Anybody in Poland actually eats soup-mix soups? [27]

most of the stuff (like Hot Mug soup - Gorący kubek) is just powdered things with little preservatives - the worst thing that's in there is the sodium glutamate - there are much worse things in many soda types, sweets (those coloured and aritificially flavoured) - actually there are powdered soups now that don't even contain glutamates or any other taste enhancers (Winiary has a line of such soups) they also contain little to no preservatives as the stuff is completely dry upon packaging in neutral atmosphere an hermetically sealed (maybe they irradiate it though - I don't know)

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

delphiandomine: another 17 bills were vetoed - not normal behaviour for a President.

Kwaśniewski vetoed 35 bills in his two cadencies - but remember that a lot of his time as president was also the time of post-communist governments (SLD)

President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski vetoed the media law . This seventeenth veto of his presidency . Lech Walesa has their account 22 and Aleksander Kwasniewski 35 , but during the two terms of office .

The decision of the President announced the head of his office Piotr Kownacki . He stressed that the analysis and consultation, the president acknowledged that the law not only rozwiązywałaby the most important problems of the media, but create new , more serious .

Language / New Dialects in Western and Northern Poland [24]

Did new dialects evolve there or are the people living there relatively dialect free?

they are almost totally dialect free and speak a television Polish (formerly literary Polish) - I know because I live in Opole region and lived in Wrocław good couple of years also travelled a bit around Lower Silesia (there is a Silesian dialect in Opole region among the autochtonous population but it is a different story) - I would believe it's the same with Szczecin and Kołobrzeg (I was in Szczecin only once and know just a couple of people from there but haven't noticed any difference in the manner of speech) - the old Kresy dialects die out with their users in these areas

it is however different with Gdańsk area (some Kashubian traits and specific flavour to their speech - there is also some evening of all Polish northern dialects in Gdańsk I would say) and also with Warmia and Mazury (those have north-eastern characteristics with prolonged accented vowels i.e. bigger length contrast between accented and unnaccented vowels; it's called 'zaciąganie' in Polish)

yes, true Kresy dialects will be lost

So could their dialect be saved?

don't think so - the thing is populations were mixed - and a homogenous speech manner (literary) arose with the new generations (actually I don't really know where the so called Polish literary originates - because except for the 'Recovered Territories' (and not all of them as I have already pointed) every region had their own specific dialect - maybe it was a educated people speak - don't know it really)

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

he Kaczynski Twins' regime was a disgrace. It produced no lasting benefit,

let's bring things to absurd, OK - how much of a lasting benefit would your personal rule leave if you were in power for 2 weeks?

It seems I have a more positive view of Poles than you do

again see the film - you don't have to be judgemental or be disfavourable opinion stating that a lot of people use concepts that are fed to them as their own and not use their own thinking or how easy it is to make them draw some conclusions by providing some false input, how they don't rely on their own understanding and their own observation even - this does not have to be disfavourable in the slightest - these girsl were wrong - they were purposely led to wrong conclusions - this is a fact and not a judgement

if you don't know calculus you don't know it - it doesn't mean you are worse than some other people

News / Anti-Szymborska hate content on Polish websites [38]

The Prize in Literature has a history of controversial awards and notorious snubs. More indisputably major authors have been ignored by the Nobel Committee than have been honored by it, including Marcel Proust, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, Vladimir Nabokov, Virginia Woolf, Jorge Luis Borges, Gertrude Stein, August Strindberg, John Updike, Arthur Miller, Yannis Ritsos, often for political or extra-literary reasons.[46] Conversely, many writers whom subsequent criticism regarded as minor, inconsequential or transitional won the prize.

the above passage is an excerpt of wikpedia entry on Nobel prize controversies

let's assume Dario Fo was not a quality author enough to be awarded the Nobel prize and was awarded on the ideological grouns by a biased committee (I am in no position to judge that just have read about controversies about his award) - if this is true there can be (are) committees who favour authors for ideological reasons and their appointments have little to do with literary valour of the works of the awarded - how on Earth you can then say that Szymborska was rightfully awarded with a reliable degree of certainty? - not to mention that literary valour is often a good deal subjective thing - now they want us to take Szymborska for some kind of authority on various things because she was awarded a Nobel prize - and people read about her autobiography and find it hardly a model for the next generations - can you see the cognitive dissonance - is someone pushing an agenda perhaps? - and like myself they can also not be moved much by her poetry - then lies and manipulations meet with anger or even hate (which is not the best thing you can wish for) - and you seem to be perplexed by the anger and by the hate

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

Evidently you think Polish voters are being somehow manipulated when they vote for the party you don't like, but miraculously cast off their blinkers when they vote for the one you do like. Now that is funny!

now - it just shows that some (plenty of) people are hardly reliable in judgement on what is real - and it is also to say that some people may sometimes be right when masses around them are wrong (like in case of flat Earth) - is it that difficult to fathom - maybe in this case I am right and they are wrong - why can't I be sometimes right when contradicting the majority John, can you explain that to me?

there have been plenty of controversies around literary Nobel prizes too - I can remember Dario Fo controversy, some Japanese author controversy (Kenzaburu Oe?) - from what I can gather the committee have long been left leaning

again - see the film (or let me know if you can't understand it - I understand that spoken Polish can be much more difficult to get than the written version):

The Nobel committee however considered her work to have great merit

the Nobel committee have given the Nobel peace prize to Barack Obama - they must have predicted that he order the Navy Seals to knock out Bin Laden - what a foresight

btw wasn't Hitler once given a Nobel prize???

however Szymborska's work was so wonderfully accessible and so many people had a genuine fondness for her poems.

so it's simply subjective - I don't have fondness for her poems and find them mostly to be shallow (not to mention that I haven't found a single one with some constructive message)

and it proves what exactly?
if you didn't know not so long ago most people believed earth was flat? I can show you one simple experiment about most people are in position to judge things and how are they able to use their minds -

youtube.com/watch?v=VjKN4dy3kGY
(there is a small innocent manipulation in the show - all those girls have fallen for the manipulation except these who admitted to be ignorant - this happens when you don't consciously use your mind and observation) - if you think they are misogynes they have made also this

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

Being caught on camera insulting a homeless man ("spieprzaj dziadu") didn't endear him to anyone.

the guy was not a homeless guy - he was some argumentative type who had some trouble with Kaczyński (with no little clue about politics just a personal dislike) -

youtube.com/watch?v=3FMp9Ec3pcY
- and deeds speak more than words - if you look at what PO (or for that matter most political parties in Poland) is doing you won't think they are better than Kaczyńscy

I only heard Poles, average or not, speak negatively of the twins.

you only heard those Poles who can't really think for themselves and swallow all propaganda they are fed by the media, OK? - how come PiS have 20 per cent iron electorate?

Szymborska's death was significant: she was arguably Poland's greatest late 20th Century poet; and Poland's only living Nobel laureate.

arguably is the most important word here :)

those products are being offered in supermarkets, so some people buy it because Poles don't have lunch time at work:). Those things are popular among students.

good point - students don't have full access or have no access to real kitchens most of the time - I didn't even have a fridge most of the time I lived in dorms (or never used them because things were going missing)

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

as far as I know minister Tomasz Lipiec was arrested in the wake of an CBA investigation into corruption around the National Centre for Sport - as you probably know CBA was formed by PiS-led government - so can you really say Lech Kaczyński did nothing to stop corruption among his own? - by the way nomination of Tomasz Lipiec was an example of PiS opening to wider public - AFAIK Lipiec was never a member of PiS, he was however a leader of NGO sport initiatives (being a former sportsman)

I wouldn't trust Jaroslaw Kaczynski with unlimited power, would you?

yes I would - because AFAIK Kaczyński never targeted people who were not into sucking the state and the population for their personal gain - if Tusk was into the good of the nation and not for the power for himself thanks to the support of various circles he would have nothing to fear joining such a coaltion

You have a short memory, have you forgotten that he pardoned his son in law's crooked business partner.

yes - it's unfortunately true - Kaczyński was not spotless ( I clearly said he wasn't perfect) - but this case is the worst thing he can be attributed and AFAIK it was a single event - you sometimes choose to help your children in the ways that are not really socially agreeable only to regret it later (often after some pressure from the said offspring)

for me a patriot is someone who cares for the well-being of a certain country - thus you can live in America and be a Polish patrtiot and you can live in Poland and be not only no Polish patriot but actually a Poland hater (even if you are Polish yourself)

some people live in America but they nevertheless keep working for the benefit of Poland - you would definitely agree that you don't need to be in Poland to work for her and her citizens' good, wouldn't you - after all Polish ambasadors don't reside in Poland, yeah?

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

They were only around 20 seats behind PiS - and could demand a high price for agreeing to the coalition.

PO is presumably a liberal party (it's just a party of money and power and not liberal actually) - they claimed they had recipees for Polish economy - and they were offered economy ministries - but they insisted on the power ministries (a liberal party I repeat) - the thing is to those who backed up PO (including funding) PiS was a deadly threat - if you read more you will learn that Jan Rokita (whose ambition was to become the minister of Interior) was willing to forge the coaltion nevertheless (abandoning his personal ambitions) and it was Tusk and Komorowski who wanted to sabotage it and demanded things that PiS could not accept

Tusk must have been laughing his head off when PiS went into coalition with those two fools - all he had to do was sit back and wait.

he wasn't laughing - they all had to make the utmost efforts to put a bad name or ridicule the rule in the eyes of the nation (they all meaning PO with the aid of the most media - not backing up from outward lie, manipulation, scare mongering with little base in reality etc etc) - btw the presumed liberal PO voted along presumably 'populist' LPR and Samoobrona for the higher and more ubiquitously applicable 'becikowe' (newborn child money) against the best advises from finance ministry that it was irresponsible (it was January 2006 before the formal coalition between PiS, LPR and Samoobrona has been agreed)

He didn't do a damned thing about corruption among his own,

which corruption among his own? - name some good examples - or did you just assume they all must be stealing the same?
btw what is president supposed to singularily do about corruption? - I can tell you one thing - corruption was targeted during PiS times much more than now or in recent years

The brothers did nothing about corruption apart from a couple of high profile incidents - all designed to get them media attention.

you must be joking
