Love / Unmarried couples in Poland = pathology [310]

personally, I think the institution of marriage should be outlawed. ;)
Being legally bounded to another person? Really?
Swearing that you'll love someone till the day you die? How can you?

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

Well, holding her hand is not your goal, lets be honest, and she probably knows that.
There are still women out there that do not want to give 'it' up until they are married. Until then she might not want any sign of impropriety, or be accused of being a tease.

Maybe, living with you she's grilled by her family if you're sleeping together, and she swore to them she's not.
Stop trying to paw her, you're making her uncomfortable. Hold back, become her friend, earn her trust, maybe then she will tell you what she wants.

Also, be careful, if she is a legal tenant, can what you're doing be considerd harassment?

Life / How to Politely Refuse a Drink in Poland [72]

When I had enough, I usually just accept the shot, pretend to drink it, then pass it on to a willing drunk closest to me. If they catch on, I pour another round and do the same thing again. And again, until they give up or we run out of vodka. Theoretically, you'd think it would not work, but I swear, it does.

Love / Do Polish girls like playing with men's feelings on internet? [52]

you are right, it's very important to meet in person as soon as possible.
I just realized that all my serious relationships were with men I met at work! Except for the neighbors, and few through family, all my friends I met through work as well, one way or another. Hmm.

Love / Do Polish girls like playing with men's feelings on internet? [52]

Some personal statistics:
*At least 5 engineers I know, all awkward nerdy types, found their wives and loves of their lives online, in China, Korea, India and Vietnam. All wives are highly educated now and everyone seem blissfully happy. Lots of respect there.

*My best friend got involved with a local man she met on free online dating site, he turned out to be a paranoid schizophrenic control freak, lots of high drama, how she wishes she never met him.

*Another good friend routinely uses online dating service. She thinks these men should wine and dine her, but the sex should be off the table - she's not a *hore, she says (I have some strong opinions on that - if you don't want the guy feel like he's been taken, pay your own way).

*I personally met two men after chatting with them online (years ago). Each left me astounded how wrong my judgement and the virtual reality, can be.

JustysiaS
There is a popular study that claims that today one in five couples meet on internet. I find that amazing! Granted, the study comes from match.com, so it may be skewed, but still, it's an eye opener.

ok, another caveat:
"sampled those over 18 with Internet access and an income of over $30,000 annually"

Real Estate / Is this a bad time to buy an apartment in Poland? [142]

I see the similar thing happeninig in US. So many people regret buying during the bubble, and being tied to a piece of real estate when job market calls for more mobility, that renting is becoming a smart thing to do.

Real Estate / Is this a bad time to buy an apartment in Poland? [142]

Thanks! Good stuff! I heard about Brazil - but I got scared after I looked at the pictures of a house a friend bought - it looked like a fortress, iron bars all around.

My son loves Recife!
I have a property in Caribbean, slated (sometime in this century, I hope) for vacation rental. There, all I really hoped for was to come out even after spending one month there a year, in the winter. This might not happen, but with land and property taxes so low, I can just sit on it and leave it for my son to deal with.

One of the ideas I got here for Poland was to get something near a Uni so I can rent it out all school year to students and have it for myself in the summer. I'm just wondering how feasible that is.

Real Estate / Is this a bad time to buy an apartment in Poland? [142]

I know! The only thing I can do at this time is keep on asking questions.
Tell us about some of those not-so-obvious factors that you know about, please.
I assume that most of them will not be in my favour. ;)

If you'll excuse me for not answering tonight, I would not like to misinform anyone but I will get back to you.

You've been very helpfull already. Thank you. And I assure you, none of this will be held against you.

Real Estate / Is this a bad time to buy an apartment in Poland? [142]

As this thread is focused on high-end apartments

so, a high end - 1mil. Can you rent it for 5K/mo?
And again, are the utilities in owners name or the tenant turns them on?

Thanks Sean. I assume then that this is not a set number, but it gets devided, according to incurred expences, between all the owners? Any rumours of what this range might be?

Real Estate / Is this a bad time to buy an apartment in Poland? [142]

Thank you WB!!
And these apt buildings charge some kind of a maintanance fees? A WAG?
I have so many more questions..
When you rent out, typically is it a tenant that turns on the utilities like water and electricity, or is it expected to be in the owners name?

And, as a Polish citizen, you get taxed on the rent you receive as income?

Real Estate / Is this a bad time to buy an apartment in Poland? [142]

Thanks WB! I'm still pretty ignorant about the prices, but a rough estimate - how much would an apt cost that you can easily rent for ... let's normalize it - 1000 zł/mo?

Life / Passing your Polish language and culture to your kids [74]

a very sensitive subject - trying to tell others how to parent, especially by those who do not have children. I used to do that too. Now, all I do is tell what I did, or would do, and let others make the choice for themselves.

I don't know any Polish families living in England who do not speak Polish to their children.

maybe it's because they're building houses in Poland? Sorry, cheap shot. Maybe there is a difference between those that leave until the economic situation improves and those that emigrate "for good"?

Life / Passing your Polish language and culture to your kids [74]

There are numerous examples showing that hardship and struggle to survive makes people stronger, but I would not blame parents for not sending their 12-year olds to work at a sweatshop.

Again, I don't think speaking your native language at home while in foreign country deserves a parenting medal, it's usually just the easiest thing to do.

Life / Passing your Polish language and culture to your kids [74]

Why? That is seriously strange statement.

Because I do believe that Polish is one of the most difficult languages to learn. That's why I feel sorry for anyone having to learn it. You find that seriously strange? That's strange. ;)

some people are just idiots for no reason,

Do you think anyone else besides yourself likes your style of discussion? I thought you left the pf.
