USA, Canada / Only one county in the USA has more Polish-Americans than any other group! [38]

The map is based on replies given in the long form questionnaire

Nope. They changed the rules for the 2010 census and used only the short form questionnaire. Only approx. 2.5% of all households in the US received the long form that year - which is now called the "American Community Survey", as far as I know.

what self-reported means

You know as well as I do that US census forms put the emphasis squarely on race. People see the question "What is Person 1's race?", notice "Japanese", "Korean" or something else underneath ( census.gov/dmd/www/pdf/d61a.pdf ), and answer "German" because they know that their ancestors came from Germany/Prussia. Of course ignoring the fact that there is no German race (or Polish for that matter). The whole map is nonsense if you talk about race or ethnicity in the cultural sense. All it shows is that the ancestors of most Americans came from a certain set of countries (except for the African and Native Americans, that is).

Your mistake is assuming that the rest of the world does the same as the USA: it does not.

People who were born in Prussia or the German Empire were almost always registered as Prussians or Germans when they immigrated through Ellis Island for example. Nobody cared whether they were of Polish or German ethnicity (in the cultural sense); their country of origin was important.

Most Americans I know define themselves by the country their ancestors emigrated from by the way. They never say "I'm an ethnic German, Irish or Brit", they say "My ancestors came from Germany, Ireland or Britain". Which is not the same.

The map shown by the Daily Mail is based on ethnicity of ancestors, not on citizenship of ancestors.

Again: the map is based on ANCESTRY, which - according to the census.gov web site you've quoted - is defined as either ethnic origin or place of birth. You are splitting hairs about the "citizenship" part here.

Anyway, let's leave it at that. Otherwise we'll end up in off topic.

Entirely incorrect: the map is based on the answers Americans gave about their ancestry.

Ancestry refers to a person's ethnic origin or descent, ''roots,'' heritage, or the place of birth of the person, the person's parents, or their ancestors before their arrival in the United States.

It's both: citizenship and ethnicity.

Many Poles who immigrated had German citizenship due to the partition and therefore are counted as German.

Correct. Looking at the article now, I believe that the folks at the Daily Mail mixed up ethnicity and citizenship somewhat. Their ancestry map is largely based on citizenship (except for Native and African Americans), which is most likely the reason why you don't see any Polish centers.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

These Polish jokes started with the Germans. Immigrants from Germany also brought this to America, and Canada.

Since there's also a "theory" floating around on PF according to which the Jews in Hollywood started the Polack jokes, I'm sure you have a very good source for your claim. Or could it be that ethnic Poles were not the only immigrants who got the butt end of a joke?

UK, Ireland / And you wonder why there is Anti-Polish feeling in the UK [187]

But when you never have, and have never once experienced the thing about which one is opining, one might wish to defer to the people who actually do know what they are talking about

Well, what about history-related questions then? Hardly anyone on PF was alive during WW2, but we still have numerous "experts" who will tell you that you have to be Polish to understand and have an opinion about Polish history. Can of worms in my eyes.

UK, Ireland / And you wonder why there is Anti-Polish feeling in the UK [187]

Really? Spent much time in Poland have you? Been to many football matches here? Met many people who go to football here?

Why would you have to live in Poland to have an opinion about something that's going on in Poland, or any other country for that matter?

History / Why did Russia attack Poland in WW2? [178]

Am I far from the mark?

Very, and I don't understand why you feel compelled to raise from the grave every few months and leave comments like the above. I've told you before that I don't care about ethnicity, and my heritage is only important to me when talking about genealogy. That's it. Don't try to fit me or others into a stereotype based on ethnicity like many right-wing douchebags on PF do. You're better than that, even though we don't agree very often.

Elk37 is the third incarnation of Ironside in one (?) week, and even though he's banned AFAIK, he's using guest accounts to troll. If you find that acceptable, that's up to you. I don't. Especially not, when he's spouting nonsense in his posts.

What other nick?

You tell me. It's pretty obvious that you are just a sock puppet of another member. My first thought was Des, but then ... he isn't such a pussy to use a guest account to play smartass.

There would be no West Germany in all probability

If the western allies would've been a little faster in their advance, Wroclaw would still be called Breslau.

Woulda, coulda - I'd say, let's be grateful for the current status quo. We could as well have ended in an all out nuclear war in the early 60's.

German punishment is long term & on going. ...forever altering their culture and heritage

European migrants as well as immigrants from outside the EU are altering the character of the whole continent - not only Germany's.

You started the fantasy history

Speaking about fantasy...

Poland should have received more land as reparations from the German Empire, the Soviets were kind to label this land recovered territories instead of calling it booty.

Poland can call herself lucky that she ended up with German territory at all. Stalin could as well have ignored everyone.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

It would have made no difference to the outcome. The Soviets would still have destroyed the vile German war machine and their genocidal aggression.

Of course it would have made all the difference. Without the UK at war the USA wouldn't have supported the Soviets with supplies, and without the American support the USSR would have lost.

They could have as well declared a war on Madagascar, since they only declared it and didn't do much about it.

Ever asked yourself what would've happened to Poland if the Brits hadn't declared war on Germany?

News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

many Germans still cannot quite shake that admitted stereotype of the Pole

I believe in many places, the stereotype of the Polish car thief has long been replaced by the picture of Turkish thugs. Don't forget that the generation which can remember life in Silesia, Pomerania and East Prussia has almost died out, and most of their children don't believe that old nonsense anyway.

The GRD was "occupied" after '89 by the BRD's capitalism.

Well, they asked for it, didn't they?

Check out German TV-comedy channels, RTL ... the reputation of Poles from the early 90's

Exactly ... early 90's ... that's almost 25 years ago. I believe that you are painting a wrong, stereotypical picture, to be honest.

News / How do Poles feel about the outcome of Germany's elections? [90]

How does that square with what you've said?

Let me answer this with a quote from the Warsaw Business Journal ...

Quote:
"Poland's main opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) would receive 35 percent of the vote if parliamentary elections were held today."

...and repeat your question: how does that square with what you've said?

To which "commie" spirit are you referring

The spirit of "Recovered Territories". People who still come up with that nonsense just changed colors - from commie red to PiS brown ...

My point is that you cannot get education out of people's head easily. You grow up with certain ideas, and these ideas will follow you for the rest of your life. Poland is no different than the ex GDR in this respect. When the 20 something's have finally taken over in Poland, things might change.

Poland is of course different because the Gomułka Era is but a distant memory to any contemporary Pole under at least 60!

We were talking about Polish commies manipulating historic facts in school education. Just take a good look around PF and you will notice that even here the old commie "spirit" is still around.

News / How do Poles feel about the outcome of Germany's elections? [90]

I think Poland historiography at the moment is most objective and impartial

So all the millions of kids that passed through the communist school system and who make up the majority of the Polish population today are all of sudden "enlightened" and don't believe that historic nonsense that they were taught as kids any longer? Don't give me that you-know-what. You only have to go to the former GDR to see how all this indoctrination from the past is still alive and well. Poland is of course different... :)

In The Federal Republic, someone who says "Ich bin stolz, Deutsche(r) zu sein!" = I'm proud to be German! = Jestem dumy(a) być Niemcem(ką) is immediately suspect of being a nut job

Exactly.
