News / Poland sends firefighters to help Russia [67]

It's not how the Russian soldiers felt in '44. They would not help a Pole.

if you mean in Warsaw i suspect the Russian soldiers halted their advance due to orders direct from Stalin , rather than a personal decision...

disobeying orders in the Russian army was not a good career move....

Life / Polish people and Politeness [84]

What about the great British bane of queue jumping - is that usual in Poland?

Polish Babcias have it down to a fine art...

Because in Poland you are expected to say it first when entering somewhere.

I bet a lot of English people do not know this...and don,t realise that the Polish person may be being rude because you have been rude to them...

When you don,t understand the culture and way of thinking , its quite easy to offend somebody and get rudeness in return...

Of course , some people are just ignorant sods , but thats not exclusive to Polish people , i met far more such people back in the UK....

Real Estate / TRESPASSING ON MY LAND IN POLAND....what can i do legally...? [119]

trespassing is not a criminal act

Well thats good news in a way....I think a party in her garden with me and a few boys from my motorcycle club might drop a hint that its not fun having people wander onto your property...

I do have some fences , but its a biggish area and would cost a fortune to fence all of it , besides , i allow another neighbour access over my land to plough his bit...

I do have a dog , but he is not the least bit aggressive , and if i let him loose all day he would probably find his way onto the road , or chase some cows...he does bark if anyone comes near the place though...

I have already had my run in with the village after some guys broke into my house and stole mobile phones and cameras , when the guys from my motorcycle club heard about it , the bandits wound up looking like a pizza... I dont have any problems with the village folks at all , and the bandits keep well clear of my place...

There will be a simple answer somewhere...just ain,t thought of it yet...!

to waitstaff in the Ukraine that is glued to a TV and might come out to see what you want if there is a long commercial break.

I can only say the staff that served us in a Pizza resteraunt in Kiev , Ukraine were a wonderfull bunch of friendly people , but the reception folks in the hotel were a bit off hand...

Real Estate / TRESPASSING ON MY LAND IN POLAND....what can i do legally...? [119]

The fruit i am not that bothered about , although it is very annoying to have to go and buy an apple when you have five apple trees in your garden...

The thing is , i am not entirely certain that members of her family were not involved in the theft of tools and equipment from my farm , so i would rather not inform her of my absence from the place...

Its a pretty small village near my farm , so i dare say it won,t be long before word gets around that the place is empty , but hopefully by then i will have got the things i value out of the place.....

Sadly , the Polish friends i trust completely do not have the time or the means to keep an eye on my place....

It would be great to have somebody living here , but its very basic here , and the only people likely to want to live here are those that are poor and desperate , and likely to sell everything they can to make money...

I will figure out an answer somehow....????

Life / Polish people and Politeness [84]

As an Englishman living in Poland i do find the Polish people to be rude and ignorant quite a lot , but i am not sure its right to judge Polish ways as someone who is not Polish....

Its quite easy to misunderstand people when you are not familiar with their customs...

I can remember when i first came here thinking that every conversation between Poles was a major argument that was about to break out in a fight , but not so , it s just their way of talking to each other...

There is a guy in one of the local shops near my farm that comes across as really rude , saying hello to him results in an icey stare , he appears to really resent selling you anything , and when you pay him he kinda throws your change at you....

Is he rude and ignorant , or just somebody who has lived his life in Poland and really is a lovely guy......????

Post offices....don,t even want to start there....!

News / Poland sends firefighters to help Russia [67]

Does this Russian woman feel any different to a Polish woman who has had her home destroyed by a flood....?

People are people , and deserve to be helped in time of need...

The Russian and Polish governments may play silly games with each other , but i suspect the people of both countries would be more than willing to help each other...

UK, Ireland / Ive been in the UK for 6 days to relocate and im going back to Poland. [281]

. The best meal I ever had in England was in a pub in Scarborough near the castle (whatever it's called). Roast beef and gravy, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding. Great traditional English meal.

The pub you are talking about is called the Albion.....I used to have a flat just over the road from the place....

Its been a bikers pub in the past , and at one time was a gay pub , but i think its more of a family place now....

UK, Ireland / Homeless Poles living on barbecued rats and alcoholic handwash? [62]

Oh ..i see , you just hate Russians....

Yes , i have fallen in love with a Russian , and plan to live there , but thats not caused me to suddenly hate Polish people...

I have some great Polish friends here , as well as some i don,t like at all...

I imagine it will be the same in Russia...

UK, Ireland / Homeless Poles living on barbecued rats and alcoholic handwash? [62]

I don,t know why i am bothering to answer this....but lets try....

Somebody mentioned that the newspapers had said the supposed Poles had a Russian name , and i said that they probably made up the name without first checking it was a Polish one.....

How the hell do you read that as me preferring the story to be about Poles rather than Russians....

If it bothers you that much , i will stop writing to my Russian girlfriend , cancel our plans to marry and live in Russia , and call all Russians nasty names...

Are you happy now.....?

Yeah, it was so wealthy that all those ppl who bought their houses under her reign, nearly all had to sell it again

The reason her government gave people the right to buy their council houses , is because a guy with a mortgage is much less likely to want to go on a pointless strike called by the unions...worked very well indeed...

Yes of course many of those who bought were lifelong council tennants , who never should have been allowed to own a house...

A peasant will always be a peasant...even if you give them money..

What about Thatcher?

Yep..i voted for her....

she was not afraid to take on the unions , and sank their boat good and proper....

Later the Labour government followed her example to curb the power of the unions , as they too could see the damage they were doing....

She screwed up on the Pole tax though....

I objected to it on the grounds i did not have any Poles living at my house...

Little was i to know that some years later i would have four Poles living at my house , and at one point eight more that i had to rescue from a tricky situation...
