News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

For4, provided the criteria are satisfied, they couldn't stop other EU members from entering. If the reason is in compliance with EU Law, where's the problem?

Anticipating objections and respecting reasonable sensitivities is important. While I may have agreed or not with JPII, for example, it was not for me to openly voice them. Some things just don't need to be said.

As for MC in Poland, I really believe that trouble will only arise when Poles start losing jobs with no tangible benefit to their economy.

In parts of Birmingham, pip. I saw it in a documentary and my Brummy friend confirmed it. Also, Choudhury has insisted on Sharia Law being applied though I think he is a govt patsy who was put in place to cause trouble. The British intel services love and need him.

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

Bend over to their rules? There is some truth in that as some areas have actually been taken over by minority groups. It is a disgrace for people who were raised in a given area to go back there later in their life, only to find that some brudasy (I use this word only because of the hostile reception afforded to those that go back to their own back yards) are ruling the roost and personally barring them. It happens, believe me. I'm not being racist here, it's just the truth in some parts.

Oh, I'd be upset if somebody insisted on me wearing a niqab or turban here. If they poured it on thick, I could end up being livid, yes. No Poles insist on me wearing a kilt though I'd happily oblige. Many Poles respect our cultural attire. We don't thrust it around.

Going back to Scotland, arriving in Edinburgh, I feel that I have arrived into some kind of socio-experimental ground. A kind of human zoo. It really is so different from here and you have to experience it before commenting (not targetted at you btw, For4).

I actually agree with parts of what you are saying, grubas, but I didn't appreciate the lie about westerners somehow giving the green light for mass immigration. Unelected Eurocrats did that so I hope you take stock of that reality. No referendum was ever issued. Yes, this is Poland and people should play by the rules. However, tolerance for others plays its part to a certain extent.

Love / Don't want others to join us at a table - is it normal for Polish girls to get angry? [161]

The vanity of their approach kills me. I had the same with a girl just over 6 years back. I told her that our being together wouldn't be a good idea but she couldn't understand how sb could refuse a Polish girl. That made dropping the bomb on her that bit sweeter. Some have simply read too many magazines.

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

Um, some 800,000 were given free movement and many firms have benefitted through capital provided by the EU, I-S. This is factual, not an opinion.

Pawłokoma is for another thread, I-S

Now, I know you have some input into the thread, I-S. Care to share it?

Life / Have many Poles had enough of one another? [198]

Surely it's just a case of sitting down, analysing your life and thinking where you want yourself to be, no?! For example, if you are meant to be a cleaner because it fits who you are then what's wrong with that? If you are in a job where you underperform through lack of challenge or incompatibility then you will feel it through stress and take action accordingly to improve your position. That is, if your surroundings allow it.

So then I ask, why the envy? Why not do sth to put yourself in a better position, circumstances permitting?

It does have a lot to do with money, I agree. Precisely, you can wrap it up and call it sth different but the essence is the same. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it's probably a duck ;)

The point is to figuratively affirm what you said. I think there is still a strong element of snobbery in British culture but it exists in Poland too.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

Slavic nations have a history of elevating hardline individuals to prominence. Look at Mladić, Piłsudski and Bandera. Let's not even speak of The Soviet Union in its day. Look to their good sides and not to their nationalism.

We live in different times. Tusk will not rock the boat on this one.

WP, British smiles tend not to be fake. We tend to be quite sincere with out emotions. You might be thinking of American stereotypes there.

Pawian, I don't follow. What do you mean?

Very good first point! Your customer is your gold, just like my students are mine. Without them, I'd have to change direction.

Yeah, the wild idealists with their heads in the sand. Clients? Why that's just reality that obstructs my pursuit of utopia ;0 ;)

Pawian, I have found Poles to be more tightfisted but that's for a different thread.

I appreciate the directness of Poles when cast alongside the fake American pitch. That would get on my nerves.

I don't get how they can be so outgoing when drinking yet so unbelievably aloof when serving. What's with that?

Work / Salary for Teaching EFL in Krakow [120]

Oh, I've made the point about inflation and the school increasing their takings but it's not for you to see any of that in their eyes. The prices of some goods have almost doubled yet the salaries stay the same. They don't care about you. McDonalds English, McDonalds mentality.

Oh, I hear what you are saying, plgrl. I observed the anger brimming under the surface of quite a few Japanese folk when I was there and can result in sudden explosions. However, the key word is balance. Things don't get to me so easily but I'd just ask some of the old biddies to tone it down a notch. They often try too hard to make you listen and I don't want that when standing in a queue waiting for sth.

If I tried that in Aberdeen, my home city, I'd probably get funny looks and be told to get lost.

Have a look at clerks here. Documents are needed as part of an effectively functioning society. However, older biddies have mastered the head down and directional finger point. Also, they often act as if the person they are helping should know exactly what to do and where to go. The 'dziękuję' at the end is priceless. It's almost muttered.

Having said that, I've come across a couple of really helpful clerks that were kind enough to spell procedures out to me on a step-by-step basis. I thank them for that! A proper thank you :)

I know plenty Poles that would disagree with you, bris.

Aha, spoon. I read 'tears', sorry. I've never heard that one but it can't be that popular, surely. It's very hateful.

They would most willingly drown themselves and each other in tears of water?? That they would cry their bleeding hearts out to each other, you mean?

Yes but the bad mood is often from self pity. Do you think the most successful societies in the world were predicated on that basis?

Tolerance is one thing, decency is another. Respect for the space of others and not harming their ears is important too.

Anywhere but Poland, perhaps :) I noticed they were a bit aloof on Fuerteventura but I put that down to it being a super laidback island culture. They still looked at me :)

Your second point, true. People are people and I don't want to be overly one-sided here at all. I've witnessed a fair bit of openness and decency and that shouldn't be pushed aside. However, you have to be in the right place to see it.

I've done so before too. You lived in England for quite a long time Wrocław, yes? I guess it is the same as in Scotland whereby if the shopkeeper sees you waiting in the queue, he/she will signal across to you to be patient and that they are doing their best to wade through the shopping items of those ahead of you. Here, many couldn't care less. They keep their heads down and make no gestures at all.

The novelty factor, a nice way of looking at it :) :) I really get the impression that some are at the end of their tether but I've seen good teamwork and I know that projects can be successful as a result. Drop the ego, pride and the rest will come easier.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

Great post, no 151.

Delph, how would you like it if scores of English flooded our beloved Scottish islands and called themselves, I dunno, Skyers or the Ionese?? They'd still be English, not Skyers or Ionese. Can't you see that?

The commonality with the thread is land grab. I echo the sentiments of the gentleman from Kiev. Do Poles really want Lithuanians, Belarussians and Ukrainians to turn against them when many clearly enjoy spending time with one another? Place too much emphasis on land and you are no better than Russia.

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

MrMom, are you treated as a first class citizen here in Poland? Is there anything you would change? If Poland and Poles treat you so well, why move? What are your goals? Try addressing those questions first before you dive headlong into the murky waters of prejudice. Don't single yourself out and you'd be fine with most Brits.
