UK, Ireland / Traps for "expats" returning to the UK - bank account and tuition fees [13]

Santander and HSBC are shyte anyway.
Did you try NatWest at all?
I know our children are in quite different situations but they were v helpful for my 16 year old last week and he got an account with no problem.

Do you have a relative in the UK who would let her use their address? Now I think of it, yes tehre were those questions about the last three years residence.

Life / Legalising Marijuana in Poland. Therapy available? [76]

Tourists can still buy weed in Amsterdam.
Ever pragmatic, the police know that if they were all closed to tourists, there would be hordes of tourists looking to buy weed on the street.

Still they are being closed down one by one I believe.

News / Polish families are urged to establish themselves in Norway : Taking children away? [36]

the problem might be cultural rather than some sinister plot to remove children from immigrants.
For example it is totally illegal to hit a child in Norway. whereas parents from the Baltic states might think a slap is OK...
So misunderstandings will occur.

Also your statement of

" How is Norway allowed to take away foreign children from foreign parents? "

is just silly. so are you saying that unless a child has Norwegian parents, they are not entitled to state protection from violent alcoholic parents?

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

The bottom line is -> sending kids to "school" at 4 can't be so cool as they apparently are far behind in skills than those that start it much later. And frankly, looking around, the results of British education system are feckin pathetic :))))))))

I agree.
Maybe that is because teachers are so busy being social workers.
Or possibly today's generation of British parents have such terrible memories of their violent school days that they have 'bad attitude' which they pass on the kids.

Just a theory.

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

I must say I have always been impressed by the mental arithemetic skills of Polish students, compared to us Brits.
However I must also say that the inventive ways of cheating I was shown shocked me!!

" aysus, what kind of f!cked up sh!t are you watching on the Internet "

Sadly it is in real life smurf, I noticed one screaming infant dolled up in uniform just yesterday.
I wonder what Polish parents think about it.

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

they start at 2 year 10 months JOn these days. In primary school 'nurseries' (something like a pre reception class, not a 'special school'. Sad but true. they are not 'special needs' at all.

WE dont have expensive private nurseries with uniform in this town..:)
Maybe in London.

Back to Polish school reform please

" Is "Welsh" nationality or ethnicity? "

ethnicity as there is no such thing as a Welsh passport.
Also of course there is a separate Welsh language as you know.

Law / Laundromats in Poland? Good business venture or not? [90]

Dominic speaks truth - the internet cafe is on its way out. Maybe 10 years ago.
As for the laundromat - it might work in a student area, with heavy advertising and so on, but in general I would agree that there are no launderettes in Poland for a reason.

I remember having an Italian student to stay and him being rather amused at the launderette that I sent him to, as such a thing does not exist in Italy. You have a washing machine or handwash or mumma does them...similar to Poland I imagine.

Work / Should I take a job as: publisher's editor in Athens / English teacher in Krakow / Italy? [5]

yes I fell in love with Krakow when I visited (too long ago now) but it was a very lovely autumn with golden sunshine and the city just looked amazing.

The idea of British stag parties going there has put me off in more recent years - that was back in the mid 90s......not sure if I could stand them..:)

Could you PM me Polsyr? I am intrigued now..:)
I love Athens as well, and can manage with the language OK.....decisions decisions..

Work / Should I take a job as: publisher's editor in Athens / English teacher in Krakow / Italy? [5]

Should I take a job ..
a. as a publisher's editor in Athens
b. as an English teacher in Krakow
c. as an English teacher in the heel of Italy

I really like option one, as unlike TEFL, it does actually have the ring of a 'proper job'. The wages are low but a flat is thrown in at a v cheap rent. I like the idea of sitting around in Exharchia wearing dark glasses, learning how to make Molotov cocktails (only joking).

PFers I need your advice...

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

Britain also gave refuge and citizenship to the ex servicemen and refugees in her care.

well yes but only after selling them down the river at Yalta...surely?
We had a Polish air force man living next door to us at home (London suburbs) I am afraid Uncle Jan gave me rather a romantic notion of the Polish man..:)

Travel / Ryanair flying domestic in Poland? [46]

I should think the short hop flights from UK and Ireland to Poland must be very lucrative these days.
Workers must have been sick of taking the bus, although of course many still do.
Smart guy, O Leary.
