News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

the Senat - equivalent of your House of Lords

Not really comparable at all. Your Senate is elected. The House of Lords is a motley crew of "peers" :) But the latter is preferable to your Senate, which in this case here is no safety net at all - quite the reverse in fact.

The laws passed by the parliament are not subject to judicial review and nullification since the Parliament is sovereign in that regard

Nonsense. Your misnomer is again a joke.

The House of Lords regularly throws legislation back to the House of Commons, usually for amendment. And anyway we have a system of First, Second and Final reading of a Bill before legislation is ready to be passed.

The UK is a democracy. Get it?

Now Poland is not - unless Poles actually care in sufficient numbers, and are prepared to do something about it of course..... Which I very much doubt.

KOD chap on TVN know with Monika ......

Is there going to be a Majdan style situation, she asked....

He is very calm and placatory in his style. He said there are going to be ongoing protests, but I remain unconvinced by KOD's style of protest.

Piotrowicz burbling on now about "Don't worry. Poland is a democracy. The situation is calm..... Drodze panstwo...... "

My God, this man with his pleading voice is getting on my nerves with his motor mouth.

Doug, get yourself involved with KOD.

I work 7 days a week as it is Delph to put my daughter through college. If pIS closed the loophole where I avoid ZUS I would be ready to give up and move to Italy, where it's free for all.

I have no time to dedicate other than to be a foot soldier. It would be interesting to see what KOD plan. So far they have been far too middle class and polite for my liking. Some real venom and anger from the parliamentary opposition wouldn't go amiss here. With real obstruction and withdrawing co-operation.

Life / Snow in Poland, where is it? [22]

Ten degrees on the beach this afternoon and no wind. If winters were like that all the time one might consider retiring here, but as it is a temporary blip we should just enjoy it while it lasts :) Grand.

Great pics Jon.

Gdansk today. A very vociferous 5,000 plus crowd. Heartfelt speeches , some hecklers, which started some back-biting, but very good natured and a large feel good factor.

The goings-on were explained to me by my dog, who comes from Kashubia, but that is of no import.... Loads of tottie there too talking to him - which disproves Grzegorz'es theory about it only being old biddies out there.

But where's it's all heading? There are too many ignorant people and yet more should have stopped what they were doing and gone to stand in the historic Market Square to show that we ain't gonna stand for it..

scrambling to become Polish citizens all of a sudden after 23 years with their noses in Poland's public trough.

Nah. Unlike others, I can't see the point of becoming a Polish citizen. Nothing in it for me. Not with the clowns we have that pass for politicans here.

and it's PIS that want to make that trough bigger - but what the hell has it got to do with you?

Why don't you go on an American forum and polish your weapon?

Life / Snow in Poland, where is it? [22]

Wheres the snow?

Last year it lasted from Feb till April in the Beskidy. Grand fun it was too. No need to panic for the next 20 years.

Global warming is a bust though if you are a young investor.

Yep Its hurting the resorts near me

The operators in some areas must be bricking it. it couldn't happen to nicer people.

Not.

Watch out for the invisible attack dogs the Polish police have.

Missed that one Harry. A joke I presume? My four footed friend can't fight back as he is too docile, and I would have to go to war on his behalf if he were threatened.

I'm not docile.....

This thread may be closed again, due to Harry trying to bait another member.

Ah...I see Vincent...

I think that was quite witty of Harry, but then you don't do wit in America do you? The US needed 30 writers to concoct a single lame episode of "Friends."

As to the police, anything is possible here in Poland, but let us hope it doesn't revert to shootings on the street, like is bulk-standard in the good old US of A right?

Meaning, it wasn't baiting - it's called barbed humour.

Law / Family law in Poland - want the Polish children back to the Irish courts [53]

what is it like for foreign nationals dealing with the family courts in Poland

I know a bit about this, having been involved in a case study.....

Really sorry to hear about this, it's going to be something like:

Ist hearing: The court ascertains the facts......
2nd hearing: The court decides on the legality of: ie: she gets awarded custody unless she is certified insane etc
3rd hearing: You have to prove you are a good dad to get access (unless she grants you access from the off ....)

If she opposes you normal rights, then you would only get visits at her location, in the presence of a court witness, and at that only a pitiful number of hours a month..

The Polish system is DISGUSTINGLY biased towards the mother against foreigners... so if at all possible try to understand why your wife would do such a thing - and keep the courts out of it as much as you can. They will find for her every step of the way, and you and your children will suffer.

I bloody hope I am SO wrong and that everything will work out fine. Sorry for the wholly negative post - but if your wife wants to play silly buggers you DO have a major problem here.

Number 9 - PM me tomorrow please. I will telephone the human rights lawyer I was doing a reading for, and see if they are willing to talk to you and point you in the right direction. Said person is very nice so I hope they can help you..

UK, Ireland / Transferring money from Poland to UK [23]

you can send money to people just using a computer without needing their bank details.

Mmm - my bank does that...I just cut and paste the clients' bank number and hey presto. Still don't get it - but thanks for the detailed reply.

I don't like the fact that services like Paypal read your IP address and automatically assume you are fluent in Polish, at the very moment when you are stressed, and have to transact in a hurry.

UK, Ireland / Transferring money from Poland to UK [23]

Personally I use PayPal for any kind of transfer.

What is the advantage of PayPal? I fail to see the point. Other than fashion, or making it easier for the business in question (such as Ryanair, who refused my debit yesterday grr)

Are they any cheaper than cards? Paypal is certainly a hell of a lot more hassle from what I know (another password etc etc to remember...)

History / Ordinary Polish people who collaborated with the Communist authorities? [28]

I know more than a few people who had senior supervisor positions who were most certainly not in the party.

Absolutely. My father in law would have gladly starved rather than pay lip service to the Party, even under threats and entreaties for 15 years from various mining directors.

I completely fail to understand how people say "But I had no choice" or "But you weren't there..." These are apologists and opportunitists. Of course some people value status and money more than others, and good luck to them, but I always sneer when I meet people who were in the Party for their own advancement.

My best mate, RIP, was a Party member, because he believed in it and was genuine. Fair play to him, and he never ordered any shipyard workers to be shot dead, or any students to be blacklisted, more to the point (he was a university lecturer...)

I can say hand on heart that I would never have signed up to the Scum though. Even if they had caught me with the proverbial pants-down scenario...

I'm enjoying every bit of my stay :)

And don't allow ignorant racist bigots such as Ironside to affect that in any way:)

Life / Are there any Muslim areas in Poland? [173]

It doesn't mean to, it means to be a deterrent for Muslims thinking about coming to Poland.

The term you want is "going to Poland" - not "coming to," as "coming to" would refer to the USA - where you are...

In other words - where the poster wishes to live is of no concern to you and non of your business because you don't live here.

In Poland.
So you are in fact translating from Polish - yet have the temerity to criticise the poster for his English?

News / How would Poland change for the better (or worse) under a PiS government? [257]

the aim is to leave the country stuck in the 1980's

Yes, if I understand it correctly they would be looking to cancel the proposed S6 East to West Pomeranian highway from Gdansk east to Berlin.

That road through Slupsk and Koszalin is an absolute death trap and a blight on poor people's living standards, those who live adjacent to what is now a main country east-west route..

Please tell me this isn't so.

Real Estate / Gdańsk - Safe and decent residential areas? [14]

Please suggest safe and decent residential areas close by and let me know what the approximate cost would be

Yep - other side of Zolnierzy - closer to Gdansk. Enter ul. Topolowa.... close to the forest. You are talking 1800 zl for a 55 metre flat inclusive. DO NOT rent close to the SKM or the main road. Wrzeszcz is wuf.

I would rent Gdansk Dolne Miasto or Stogi for value.....

News / Is this the first clear and open signal that Poland makes preparations for war with Russia? [163]

from the underside of a delivery aircraft if you decided to invade Poland.

You are showing gross ignorance of how nuclear deployment works. Do you want me to spell it out for you? ( a generality, as I am not actually in the services myself)

The Polish air force could not simply decide that they have the right to drop the nuclear bomb, or didn't you know that? LOL

Why do people insist on babbling about something they know bugger all about?

Feedback / A special "for those living in Poland..." section. [33]

If delphiandomine and his clique so desperately don't want people like me, Ironside and Johnny Reb on this forum why won't they move to other forum about Poland like allthingspolish?

Wot? And discuss Polish "affairs" with the only poster Mr ATP NewsEditor? That site is for people who don't pay tax and contribute here. That means you.

News / PiS to force every hard working, low earning Polish family to pay for TV [96]

The opłata klimatyczna is charged in healthful climates, resort areas, etc. where fresh air is in abundance.

Shocking pollution in Zakopane when I was there last...... just saying :) And if you sneak off the path you don't pay the "tourist" tax. I pay enough direct taxes so refuse to pay that one on principle.

Thanks.

Law / Drinking in a parked car. What the Poland's law says? [24]

Don't you need the keys in the ignition in order to switch that on?

Works without keys when I snap the keys out. Strange but true. The car has a meaty battery but 6-7 hours of Rush at full volume drains it. I know that because I had to be pulled out of the forest by a tractor once :(

I think it is going to be asking for trouble playing the sounds and beering it.... pity really, as no-one would be accompanying me as designated driver, because the whole point is to be on your lonesome:)

if you are inflagrante on the back seat

So does rocking with the hound constitute same? As it were.....

There is an article on that here

Thanks for all that kpc. It's a serious question, as my gaffe gets little sun in winter and I do like a view and (good) music when supping the amber nectar,

I suppose legislation 2a) would be deemed to put the kybosh on my dastardly scheme?
