News / Poland shall dominate Europe. Ongoing process [30]

He was selling himself as cheap physical worker, just to survive.

... and when he died he was still impoverished and in debt ...

well, let`s not compare Poland and Germany.

Well, you were the one who provided the link to the Bloomberg article.

Its not Poles who looted Germany several times but the opposite and its not Poles who committed genocide on Germans but the opposite.

You forgot your Sarmatian brothers who occupied Poland much longer than the Nazis.

Anyway, Tesla and WW2 have nothing to do with Poland's current economic strategy. It's a political decision to bring low paying service and blue collar jobs like the Amazon logistics centers into the country. Does that make the millions of highly educated people who left Poland want to go home? No.

Poland shall dominate Europe.

As a provider for cheap labor?

Quote from the Bloomberg article:
"Even so, average monthly salaries are a third of what companies pay their employees in neighboring Germany, according to statistics office. That's lured foreign investors."

Genealogy / My grandmother's last name was Krolik, is this name Jewish? [66]

We have a right to know why our mothers split the way they did.

Then why don't you provide the necessary information to help you? If your grandmother was born in Kalisz, she was most likely married there, too. Try to find the catholic church books of the relevant time frame (again: when was your grandfather born?), and order the microfilms from the LDS if available. If not, contact the state archive or the church that is in charge of Kalisz and the surrounding area.

Genealogy / My grandmother's last name was Krolik, is this name Jewish? [66]

Marina, looking at the search results from familysearch.org/search, it could well be that your family was of either Polish-German or Polish origin. There were plenty of Kroliks in Prussia/Germany, and there are quite a few Polish/German first and family names to be found in the same marriage and birth records. There are also many records from Kraków and Lublin for the Królik surname, but without knowing your grandfather's given name and his date and place of birth, it's hard to tell in which direction to search.

Genealogy / Poles born under Russian control - are we Russian? [29]

why does it bother you so much?

It doesn't 'bother' me as you say, I'm simply curious because half of my ancestors came from Poland. As someone with a keen interest in genealogy, I want to understand under what circumstances - both politically and economically - people had to live. I don't care about the distorted patriotic view of historic events, and I'm therefore particularly allergic to any attempt to rewrite history (which happens all too often on PF, IMO). Call it a fad if you like.

So, are you able to answer my question regarding the participation of ethnic Poles in the uprisings? :)

Genealogy / Poles born under Russian control - are we Russian? [29]

just reminding you that there was for example such thing like Kingdom of Poland also known as Congress Poland

Guess why I wrote 'after 1831' ... :)

I guess for Poles there was

Well, who knows? 'For Poles' is a generalization which implies that all ethnic Poles were ardent patriots fighting for their freedom at every opportunity. I've never seen any statistics that show what percentage of the ethnic Polish population was actively involved in the uprisings for example, and how many of those were city dwellers and farmers. I would really be interested in such data, so if you know a good source please post it.

I'm saying that they identified themselves based on either where they were born or to pass-sometimes both.

Yes. There's a difference between citizenship and ethnicity; that's why we have these discussions all the time.

Genealogy / Poles born under Russian control - are we Russian? [29]

The "natural" answer looks a bit different: they were Russian citizens, but ethnic Poles.

living in the Polish territory under partitions

After 1831, there was no such thing as a Polish territory.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

And if you actually read the article you'll find it was used far earlier than that.

And if you read the article again you will see that it was actually the term "Jewish-Christian" which was used earlier... :)

Quote:
"Judeo-Christian is a term used since the 1950s to stress the common ethical standards of Christianity and Judaism..."

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

It is a tradition of over two millennia.

If you believe Wikipedia, the term 'Judeo-Christian' was coined in the US in the 1950's.

this phrase has nothing to do with the historic or scriptural relationships between the religions, it's an undefined political phrase

True. See above.

News / Poland's economic future? [294]

GDP nominal is not an appropriate tool , because it does not eliminate exchange rate

That's why the USA for example uses GDP as its primary measure of total economic activity, right? Of course there are adjustments to the nominal GDP necessary which take certain factors into account. I thought that was clear ... silly me ... :)

Germany would be in the same dump along with the rest of Europe if it was not with the help of American funds flowing in the 50-ies .

The Marshall Plan funding ended in 1952 and the dismantling of the German industry continued until after 1949.

News / Poland's economic future? [294]

You simply can`t come to terms with the stagnation in your original countries and want to downgrade achievements of Poland .

You are showing the symptoms of a stereotypical Polish meathead (or PolAm, I can't remember): unable to admit that Poland needed a lot of outside help to reach the current level of development. The country would still be an ex communist dump without foreign investment, EU funds and the ability to export to the common market without having to pay massive import duties. Add to that the fact that Poland was able to "export" a lot of its potential unemployment to the UK and other western countries, and you will have a few of the reasons why Poland made such a big progress.

Poland can really be proud of what it has achieved so far, but claiming that it was only through good education and hard work without any help from others is just plain nonsense.

HDI is the key factor to determine developement these days

Take the GDP instead: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29

100 billions is nothing for a country like Poland

Well, then don't take them.

Don`t pay attention to that funds , they are so irrelevant for Polish economy that you can just disregard them .

EUR 106 billion are irrelevant? Don't be silly.

Quotes:

"In the light of the current arrangements, over the next seven years Poland will be the biggest EU funds beneficiary among all the member states, not only the biggest beneficiary of the Cohesion funds alone as has been the case so far."

"Consequently, the greatest peril connected with EU funds, according Lewiatan, is using the EU support to boost "short-term growth drivers". Such an approach "... in the long run leads to ... preventing Poland from developing its future competitive edge..."

News / Poland's economic future? [294]

Who predicted that we will not fall into stagnation as the rest of Europe in the last years .

And what were the reasons, may I ask? Is Poland a magical island which is not affected by the ups and downs of the global economy? Or could it be that a high number of emigrants combined with massive monetary transfers from the EU helped a "little"?

History / Walesa says without meeting Mrs Thatcher in Gdansk Solidarnosc wouldn't have won [51]

The reality is that Gorbachev wasn't even a full member of the Politburo when Solidarnosc came into existence.

What does that matter? If a man like Brezhnev would have been in power at that time instead of Gorbachev, you would have seen Soviet tanks crushing any freedom movement including Solidarność. Thus the organization wouldn't exist today.

Walesa (and other Polish politicians) seem fairly certain that she did have. Any thoughts as to why their opinions are so different to yours?

They simply wanted western attention and publicity to prevent the USSR from interfering (i.e., invading). Thatcher was despised for crushing the trade unions at home. You really think Solidarność respresentatives had any sympathy for her? She was just a helpful tool.

Polonia / Uncomfortable treatment of Poles in Lithuania? [15]

As for action of the Lithuanian government they will pay for it as soon as Poland will be back in hands of Poles.

What do you have in mind? A little military invasion perhaps? :)

Only a fool would suggest that it's of Asian origin.

You know that the German Empire had colonies in China and that quite a few people from the colonies moved to Europe?
