I doubt that!

im not sure that citing latin, french and german as one-time-but-no-longer lingua francas necessarily means that english will follow suit. that said, i dont necessarily agree that the role of english as the worldwide lingua franca is irreversible. i believe the future will belong to poly-linguists, which might not include the british. but we are not there yet

whilst you might believe that germany is the centre of the universe "the fact remains that much of the business, political and academic communication between 2 or more coutries is invariably conducted in english"

English permeates globalisation, europeanisation, and americanisation. EU language policy is, apart from some rights to interpretation in the supra-national institutions, and the promulgation of documents in all official languages (which in theory have equal rights), largely covert. This facilitates the dominance of English.

The role of English as a worldwide lingua franca is irreversible. It is therefore more fruitful to accept this role than either bemoan it or follow the European Union's hypocritical language policy

It [English] is everywhere. Some 380 million people speak it as their first language and perhaps two-thirds as many again as their second. A billion are learning it, about a third of the world's population are in some sense exposed to it and by 2050, it is predicted, half the world will be more or less proficient in it. It is the language of globalization - of international business, politics and diplomacy.

the idea that the british cant speak foreign languages is as ridiculous as the people who suggest it. the vast majority of us learn at least 1 at school

but when all is said and done, the current lingua franca is english and the chances of you speaking our language is much greater than the chances of us speaking yours, wherever you are from

the fact remains that much of the business, political and academic communication between 2 or more coutries is invariably conducted in english, being able to communicate sufficiently in english is therefore of greater importance to many than it is for the british to achieve similar levels in foreign languages

this is why many foreigners will frequently revert to english even when a native english speaker is speaking their language. i have witnessed this particularly in poland

so you believe the brave stories your grandaddy tells you, enough said

most poles believe they come from a great nation, which is obviously something passed down from great granddaddies becasue it hasnt been the case in living memory

Work / Why Poland employers are afraid of hiring any foreign nationals? [171]

ive got a freind who is about to open a vege restaurant in sopot which is great becasue i am vegetarian and crave decent food when im here... but the life span of so many of the restaurants that open up in sopot is a summer season, two if they are lucky, before closing... his potentially huge capital investment worries me...

Well, to some extent its true that its necessary to have a good connection or acquaintances in finding a job, but lets not exaggerate this. I agree that it can be a global issue but still i think in Poland its bit exaggerated which is not fair.

british friend of mine just started a company here with his polish wife - as soon as they announced it they were told - great... you can give so and so family member a job... so it definately exists

as it does in the uk

recent scandle involving corrupt politician, no?

outragous

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

I'm a Trinity graduate myself and think that the Trinoty course itself is superior but CELTA is more widely known.

me too - but that doesn't stop celta grads thinking theirs is the best ;-)

But it's not well-known here is it? More of an Asian course.

good question - they have at least 8 centres in Europe pumping out grads every month and have been doing so for a good few years now. they also have a different approach to conducting 'business' than the other 2 major providers which has helped them build a solid brand quickly. they are, and will continue to be, major players

the ceo is American and the company as teflintl targeted Americans to begin with - hence the popularity of their Asian centre locations

What is callan?

as seanus says, callan is a teaching method. callan as a brand has done phenomenally well in the polish market... for a number of reasons. avalon is the latest method to appear - produced by ex-callan teachers with an updated set of materials but not much else - they will be aggressively marketing in Poland and in fact have a training sessions for new avalon schools in Warsaw tomorrow

the great thing about these direct methodologies for potential teachers is that you probably wont be asked for any sort of teaching qualification - you will be trained up in the method and then be good to go

celta graduates like to think thay have the best course

trinity is widely known and respected

tefl international graduates more per year than trinity

none of them are cheap

plenty of work in smaller cities for unqualified native speakers - just turn up at your local callan if you dont want the expense of a cert

a more objective perspective

that unfortunately reaches a similar conclusion to nis post

During the period there were 22,793 crimes in the capital for which a foreign national was charged. The highest number of offences - 2,310 - being carried out by Poles.

I hope to teach LCCI here

which particular programmes?

and are you noticing english language schools breaking away from teaching english and branching out into a broader range of (vocational) subjects - secretarial skills, IT etc etc

sorry for the barrage of questions but they relate to a conversation i had earlier in the day which sparked an interest - i hope you dont mind
