News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

There is a monument to Polish Kopernik in Serbia

Thank you Serbians ; it is nice that you don`t want to distort our history unlike some lunatic home spun German historian . Poland has always had to deal with usurpers from behind Odra river . We survived germanization we will survive this next attempt of stealing our identity .

Pretty well

Why didn`t he call him simply a foolish astronomer ........ Why did Philip Melanchthon call him sarmatian ........

I know why - he was playing this famous German medieval game by saying instead of " oh those foolish Germans " - " foolish Poles" .

Ahhhha, now I get it . You discovered that unsolved puzzle of all times -" where do the origins of polish jokes come from ". Well done Sherlock .

Not necessarily.

So he called him Polish , but thought deep down in his heart he was German , that is wrong explanation of yours . BTW If you mention Polish names write them correctly King Władysław Jagiełło not some Jogaila ( don`t mistake him for Yoga , pls )

I am en expert on Medieval history in the Baltic region :)

Also don`t mention other name than Gdańsk here on PH .

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

Philip Melanchthon, Luther's colleague, said in his letter about Nicolaus Copernicus:

"Some people think that it is a great thing to work out so absurd theory , like ths Sarmatian astronomer , who stops the sun and moves the earth ".

If a German thinker close to Martin Luther calls Nicolaus Copernicus a Sarmatian astronomer , it is just another proof , that Kopernik was not German . Sarmatism was known as virtually Polish trend in life .

"Sarmatism" (also, "Sarmatianism") is a term designating the dominant lifestyle, culture and ideology of the szlachta (nobility) of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Together with "Golden Liberty," it formed a central aspect of the Commonwealth's culture. At its core was the belief that Polish nobles were descended from the ancient Sarmatians.

now, what do i win

Nothing , it just proves that his name was just written in Latin Nicolaus , German- Nikolaus and French- Nicholas . You may ask me , why ????? The answer is that Latin was the universal language but in XVII century the French language was displacing Latin from usage . Thank you, no prize !

(I mean the source which shows Copernicus using that name to refer to himself, not the source of anything else).

You have to go to the Jagiellonian University library to ask for Krakow`s XV century registrar to see how his last name was written , and it was written Kopernik .

There is no doubt that the name was of Slavic origin, with the "nik" ending, typical of the Polish language, added to the professional designations (łagiewnik (potter), miecznik (sword-bearer), stolnik (master of the pantry), (rzemieślnik (craftsman), etc.).

copernicus.torun.pl/en/biography/1473-1491/4

Don`t repeat your stupid request as I told you , all his works were in latin as all works at that time . Polish kings were signing their names in latin too and no one claim they were Roman , you ignorant.

pergamentai.mch.mii.lt/IstoriniaiLietDok/istoriniailietdok_2en.pl.htm

Polish king, at Kopernik time, was Zygmunt I Old, he always signed himself as Sigismundus Rex . Does it mean he was Roman ? See the above source .

Nicolaus Copernicus is in Latin , you fool . It is not German name . Find me a German who`s name is Copernicus .

Tell that to the thousands of Germans who were involved in the anti-Nazi resistance and to the hundreds of thousands of East Germans who joined that country's armed forces and stood ready to fight their fellow Germans.

HAHAHAHAHAHA , YOU ARE SO PATHETIC , YOU DO NOT BELIEVE IN THIS CRAP YOURSELF . YEAH , I CAN IMAGINE MIKO£AJ KOPERNIK AS ANTY GERMAN ACTIVIST AND PARTISAN . GIVE ME A BREAK .

signed his name "Mikołaj Kopernik"

HIS SIGNATURE LIKE THE REST OF HIS WORKS WAS IN LATIN .

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

In 1512 Mikołaj Kopernik gave the oath of fidelity to Polish King Sigismund I the Old .

During Polish-Teutonic War, 1519-1521, after leaving the Warmia, by a majority of the members of the Olsztyn chapell`s property , on his shoulders rested the task of defending castles in Warmia against teutonic knights . He strengthened, among other things, Olsztyn castle fortifications, so that the approaching army of the Teutonic Knights in 1521 resigned from its siege .

W During the Polish-Teutonic war in the years 1520-1521, in the castle in Olsztyn on 16 November 1520 years he personally drafted a letter to King Sigismund I the Old, asking him for armed help against the Teutonic Knights, and ensuring his fidelity wrote that, -" I will do it totally devoted to your Majesty - even if I was to die."

No German would fight against Germans or be willing to die for Polish king and Poland This illustrates whom Copernicus was , even if his mother had german ancestry, his father was Polish from Krakow , he was raised and lived in Poland and was educated in Jagiellonian University in Krakow , Poland and Bologna , Italy . His achevements could be accomplished, because at that time Poland was in its golden age of prosperity .

His works, like many other works written in medieval Poland, were written in Latin, which was at that time the internationall language .

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

Stop trying to explain anything - it will only make you bitter and frustrated - because those who are most hateful against the Polish people are not willing to understand and those who aren't hateful, understand the obvious anyway

I know that . This is part of my nature to bring some information to few people, who trust too much in the media or politicians . I will not get frustrated , because I treat these people as only brainwashed by the media or politicians . I can observe that, it is better to stir the hatred towards Poles instead of admitting that average people are not in the circle of interest of neo- liberal policy . The recent pumping into the financial system billions of dollars shows the real face of global politics , which includes governments , ONZ, EU, which are nothing, but corrupted tools in the hands of financial institutions like banks and big corporations .

Opponents of neoliberalism argue the following points:

Globalization and liberalization subvert nations' ability for self-determination.
Neoliberalism as a form of capitalism increases productivity but erodes the conditions in which production occurs long term, i.e. resources/nature, requiring expansion into new areas. It is therefore not sustainable within the world's limited geographical space.
Exploitation: critics consider neo-liberal economics to promote exploitation.
Negative economic consequences: Critics argue that neo-liberal policies produce inequality.
Increase in corporate power: some anti-corporate organizations believe neoliberalism, unlike liberalism, changes economic and government policies to increase the power of corporations and large business, and a shift to benefit the upper classes over the lower classes.
There are terrains of struggles for neoliberalism locally and socially. Urban citizens are increasingly deprived of the power to shape the basic conditions of daily life.
Trade-led, unregulated economic activity and lax state regulation of pollution may lead to environmental impacts or degradation.
It is claimed that deregulation of the labor market produces flexibilization and casualization of labor, greater informal employment, and a considerable increase in industrial accidents and occupational diseases.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoliberalism

After reading critic`s arguments , you can see it is not Pole`s fault, but the globalization and neoliberalization, which was adopted by many countries several years ago .

Language / Pronunciation difficulties for Poles speaking English [40]

Because you dont have ś in your language , you have to learn how to pronunce it from a Polish speaker .

No , we don`t put huts on our heads when its cold . The difference between hut and hat is easy to discern for Polish speaker ." Hut' in Polish sounds like " hat " , but "Hat " sounds in Polish like "het".LOLs, so complicated total mish mash.

Language / Pronunciation difficulties for Poles speaking English [40]

what are the reasons for this?

The main reason is the fact that English language is the most inconsistent language in the world . It doesn`t have any predictable rules in pronunciation , double vowels and its grammar rules are totally different than Polish . Because of these differences it is very hard to learn both languages by Polish and English speakers .

Just for example :
English letter "u" is pronunced in Polish only like "u" , but it has few different pronunciations in English -

in a word "you" - Polish pronunciation of a letter "u" is the same like in English

but in other words like :

"music, mute , mural " - it sounds like Polish "ju"
" but , hut " - like Polish "a "
"bury " - like Polish "e"
"succint" - like Polish "y" why do you pronunce it more like Polish " syksynt " is a total puzzle for me .

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

The English never voted for the EU,

But Polish people have never voted to become a part of communist block run by Soviets , but Churchill gave his pro vote instead of us .

Now you can observe only a gleaning of those events. The period of 1989- 2004 was a sad time in Poland of selling out our country`s asstes to foreign corporations for a fraction of their value , just to see those enterprises closed afterwards , as the way to get rid on the international market from its competitors and to prepare a 40 million Polish market for seeling out EU goods .

These practices caused 20 % of unemployment rate and moved Poland backwards several years in economiocal growth .

Before that time our country was robbed and degrated by our neighbours : Germany , Russia and Austria through 123 years of partitioning and I and II WW which were carried out on Polish soil and literally ravaged our country . Those grim events moved our country backwards few centuries while other countries faced normal economical growth .

According to the laws of nature:

all processes that take place in nature they drift from the state of disequilibrium to equilibrium.

every process in nature must comply with the law of conservation of energy.

any process that occurs spontaneously in nature is first - consistent with the principle of conservation of energy second - irreversible.

Having in mind those simple laws , you have to remember that the processes of degrading our country started long time ago and they are irreversible and people will be trying to bring equilibrium to the standard of their existence until its ballanced . I dont see that this process will cease in the near future , so you have to bury the hatchet .

Criticism expressed by foreign born citizens is welcome here in Poland , but only when it is unbiased and well balanced . But I can notice that here on PF it has reached unprecedented form and scale . This also pertains to anty- Polish overtones in UK media and certain political spheres .

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

Having fully agreed with a post nb 161. it is easy to notice the great manipulation with statistics , just to spread hatred towards some immigrants , who in big numbers settled in Uk after 2004 when the 10 new countries entered EU , among which there was Poland of course . Polish emigrants were coming to UK in the biggets numbers due to the fact that Poland is the most populated country among all the new members .

The period between 2001 and 2010 saw significant change in the UK's foreign-born population. In particular, the 2004 and 2007 enlargements of the European Union have led to mass migration from the likes of Bulgaria, Latvia, Romania, Poland, Slovakia and Lithuania.[1] The number of Polish-born people resident in the UK increased from 60,711 in 2001 to an estimated 532,000 in the year to December 2010, whilst the Lithuanian-born population increased from 4,363 to an estimated 87,000.[

In 2010, the most common foreign countries of birth were India, Poland

/wiki/Foreign-born_population_of_the_United_Kingdom

Now bringing the number of that foreign born population in UK and the statistics of convictions from the post nb 156 , we get a very different list :

Pomania 18.1
Lithuania 20.8
Latvia 24.7
Portugal 45
Poland 78
France 107
Ireland 167

The above list shows that out of 18. 1 people living in UK , but born in Romania 1 person was convicted , while Polish born residents in UK convictions per capita is quite low , it is twice less common than among Portugese residents , putting our country closer to France , which no one considers as a country which brings violence to UK.

It seems obvious that forming prejudices against Poles was the main issue hidden in that newspaper`s article.

If the number of Polish born residents is larger than that included in official statistics the ratio of convictions is even more favourable for Poles and puts our country as the least violent of all . Some claim that Polish born residents in UK are as large as 1 000 000 , so the ratio of convictions is as low as 147 .

I actually like it here, but if I do f'ck off, there'll be a few more unemployed Poles.

The Polish NFZ system is for poor people , pensioners and some unlucky unemployed people . If you claim that you are so wealthy , why does your wife depend on public system . I pay my contributions to ZUS , Tax office and still don`t go to public system and leave it for people who don`t have any other options . That is my contribution to my country . I pay my taxes on time and have never got back anything in exchange . I just think that if I get old then maybe I will be in need to take back from my country in a form of healthcare what I payed earlier .

No one says that there is no place for you people , but you complain one after another . This is something that Polish people will never accept . No country is perfect , but hey there is nothing positive in Poland according to you , people .

Law / Medical Malpractice in Poland - seeking accountability? [146]

If one is employed, one and one's employer are required to pay ZUS (with the money being deducted before it gets to one).

You troll has just repeated my post : this is what I said

To receive the healthcare in Poland you need to pay the insurance to ZUS , if you are employed , it is up for the employer to pay or if you are self-employed it is up to you . If you don`t pay you will not get into a public healthcare system . Tax office and ZUS are two separate institutions . It is not like in the UK or Canada where all the money for healthcare comes from taxes.

So , dodn`t distort my comments .

So perhaps it might be better to try low-tech (i.e. cheap) solutions before trying high-tech (i.e. expensive) solutions?

Like what , enlighten us .

Surely Monia doesn't want to make up believe that GP's (or even specialists in a hospital) in Poland earn that much, does she? To be honest ... I wouldn't be surprised if the GP's over here make about 10% of that.

I cited polish GP salary in my earlier post . It is not high at all, when you compare them with Dutch doctors . Who said otherwise . It is too low , in my opinion . But doctors are not as poor as you claim . They can make 10 000 - 30 000 PLN a month, working in private clinics, what means in Polish standards as rather high, taking into consideration a ratio of salary and expeditures you make in Poland .

It is irrelevant how much of budgetary expeditures a country spendsb on healthcare , if a budget is small the real number is still low .This is a case of Poland . Our budget can`t be compared with bigger or economically stronger and more populated countries.

Really? So if the Polish taxpayer isn't paying for it, who does pay for it?

Your comment is unmeaningful as always . To receive the healthcare in Poland you need to pay the insurance to ZUS , if you are employed , it is up for the employer to pay or if you are self-employed it is up to you . If you don`t pay you will not get into a public healthcare system . Tax office and ZUS are two separate institutions . Conveniently leaving out the truth, as usual

What was not true in my post , may I know ? What was inconvenient ?

As usual

, why such a biased comment ? The patient was treated with the best procedure , while in the UK he would be left with creams , why not giving a patient the most effective treatment possible ?

But hey ... why should you ever tell the truth anyway ... ? Maybe your "friend" should consider going on a refresher course - his/her knowledge seems to be a wee bit outdated.

Why do you think my friend` s ( british born and educated doctor ) knowledge is outdated, if he mentioned the same type of treatment which you cited in your source yourself, which is the ointment treatment .

If you have nothing important to say, just don`t say anything . You haven` t said anything contributing except of admitting, that in UK doctors use ointments, which is exactly what I said .

Polish healthcare system is not dysfunctional as you guys claim . It works the same as in most civilized countries including the States and the UK . The difference is that it is much effective and way cheaper . Look at the expenditures of most countries for the system and compare it with Poland .

If other countries spent so little as Poland spends their system would collapse in just few days . We spend 10 times less than USA . So I only wonder how it can work as it works for so little money . Polish people don`t die on the streets although Poland spends according to WHO 919 USD , but the USA spends 6719 USD . Thats a miracle what Poles do and achieve for such a funny amount of money .

It is so easy to criticize, but may you advice Polish Ministry of Health how to make the system more effective for so little money , I am sure that if you give them a reasonable advice they will hire you as consultants and you can contribute to our country in a very effective way , instead of complaining and whining all the time .

Poland is good and beats the place he has come from.

I think the same , there are not too many countries which offer the decent standard of living for so little money eg. prices of land , labour , materials , food , healthcare , education . I have got a family member, who has been diagnosed with skin cancer, but not so malignant . After being diagnosed with a cancer it has been removed within a week with laser . All was for free and was done in a public system . Nobody was expecting any bribes . I have a frend, who is a doctor in UK and he told me that in UK a person would be treated with an ointment instead of laser because laser is too expensive . I am lucky I live in Poland and have an access to the best possible treatement and I can be treated by the most competent doctors

I don`t believe in any of your stories . If some doctors took any bribes it was long time ago and I just admire your imaginative attitude .

I just can`t understand, why you are stuck here , go back from where you came from .

History / Do Poles really blame Britain for Poland becoming Communist after the war? [104]

The armed forces of the Polish resistance movement in 1944 numbered more than 500 thousand. people, including nearly 150 thousand. fought in partisan units

You troll may add to that number you deliberately omitted +500 000 troops in underground forces + 20 000 in intelligence units .

It is not me who claims but official sources :

ww2.pl/Polish,Military,Effort,during,Second,World,War,21.html

For the entire period of the war there also existed the very important "silent front" - the intelligence. Probably up to 2 millions Poles served since September 1st, 1939 to May 8th, 1945 in all the Polish military formations - regular armies, partisan troops and underground forces.
