News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

People would be prepared to do that if they cared enough. But they don't, obviously.

They're Poles you see, and are used to having others do their thinking for them unfortunately, or, as is the the case with others, they are guilty of not caring about the well-being of their country. I've often heard Poles say "I'll just look after myself, because the country doesn't do anything for me..."

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Anyway, here goes. We're going to see a huge amount of demonstrations this coming weekend.

The only protest that is going to have a real effect is if people get on the train or bus and descend on Warsaw regularly in their tens of thousands. As people did so in the past in London demonstrations in the UK, and not in provincial centres.

Sorry Delph, but this really is clueless IMO. And it pains me to say so.

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

serious stupidity is not funny.

Whose stupidity? Are you suggesting that the posters' sister is stupid to move her business to Slowakia?

But wait - you're not here, so none of it affects you in the slightest. In fact - in a real economy, there is no way you should have the vote or any say in the matter whatsoever.

Now run along Yankee boy.

UK, Ireland / Hundreds turn out for funeral of Polish man who died alone on in County Clare Christmas Day [28]

My observations of Polish society from living there are that people care very little for the greater good or for those outside their immediate family or intimate circle

'Fraid so. The one and only failing really. That's why communism and the idea of "The People's Republic" was a sick giggle. Poles are (stereotypically) the most insular and ungenerous people you will ever meet. (But fantastic and true friends to those they know)

Except that when my car broke down with my nipper inside on a boiling day the one and only mechanic for 50 kilometres around left his family Sunday lunch on the table to drive out and tow my car to his workshop, and patch it up.

So a stereotype is all it is.

Not even the bees work in the UK and Ireland on a Sunday :)

So why do French seamen and farmers go crazy, and always get their way, and my brother and a million others got rid of that tyrant Thatcher - and yet Poles amble along to a town square for a jolly flag waving smiley Saturday lunchtime?

Sorry Delph, but this has no backbone and is pretty lame, as I said before. If KOD were prepared to actually FIGHT - I would be there. Otherwise, it's a middle class Hurrah-Henry thing, and I'm not interested.

I think we can now safely put this to bed Delph.

Once again, Poles have shown that they have no guts and no backbone, and are perfectly happy to be dictated to. The general apathy is deafening and the criminals are running the asylum.

I am retiring from public life to walk the dog. I kindly suggest that you metaphorically do the same, and let these losers damage their country if they so wish to do.

News / Poland's election winning party: PIS proclamations [229]

as a result PiS won the parliamentary election.

You say that the two aforementioned gentlemen were talking "Over a beer." Now in the world of dirty seaside postcards - what rhymes with "beer"?

Patience, Doug ;) This tactic is highly effective

I am not convinced Delph. When KOD come up with something STRONG, I will give up my not inconsiderable Saturday earnings to go and support them - but this is weak IMO. Sorry.

Or do the Komitet Obrony Koryta rabble-rousers prefer to keep them in the dark with sweeping generalisations such as "march for demcoracy"?

Exactly Polonius - you are right.

More to come, no doubt.

BUT:

KODs approach is all wrong Delph.

Nobody gives a **** anymore about the free media. It's all there, right here. It's called the internet.

Now:

If they said: Let's call on this criminal government to resign, let's call for a public vote of no confidence in this government - then I am interested.

Very, very LAME.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

tyskie

Sort of drinkable. Not brewed with too much wheat flour added, as is the case with Zywiec (wheat flour is the cheapest possible ingredient in "brewing").

After PiS clean things up and open new vistas of opportunity, many may well realise their place is in an honest, decent, patriotic and un-mafiaesque Poland.

Utterly clueless. sorry Pol, but there it is. More brain will leave, not the other way around.

Life / Cricket in Poland - Wroclaw, Katowice, Warsaw (casual group) [15]

there are any cricket clubs in katowice?

No. Lived there for 20 years. No cricket.

Tennis is THE sport in Katowice. I heartily recommend it to you. Much as I love cricket, the summers are too short for pitches to be maintained.

Thanks a bunch Harry. Budweiser spilt on the keyboard when I read that :) Dell laptops obviously like Czech beer though so we're OK.

it was a crying shame for the Tusk gang to agree to have the presidential plane land

Yawn. If the pilot had been allowed to do his job, and locked the cockpit door as aviation law demands, more than 90 people would have been eating their pierogi supper that day.

The blame lies at only one door. That of the president and his air force buddy. End of. We are all getting mighty sick of this typical Polish bleating after the milk is spilt.

PS In any normal country - in the light of the evidence - the state would have to pay out many TENS of millions of zlotys in compensation to the families' victims for the state criminal negligence - so you are right in a sense.

But the award would be against the president's office ( that is - PIS)

For God's sake Crow, you are at it again. Where is that head banging against a brick wall smiley again?

We were talking about how to contribute and make a difference here in Poland. Is that so difficult to grasp?

If you are not a citizen of Poland you should not be demonstrating against our government or voting in Poland

Now now dolnoslask....
The Polish government have been perfectly happy to take my income tax, my ZUS, my property taxes, and VAT for the last 23 years. The fact that I can't be bothered with all that democracy, and at one time would have had to give up my British citizenship to take Polish citizenship means that I am not a Polish citizen.

AFAIC I have more of a voice than Wulkan/G/Iron/ and Polonia et al, but they have a vote if they hold citizenship, right? Although they haven't been here in donkey's years.

That's the real stupidity of the system , and yes, I do have a voice. If they try to take it away from me, I will withhold those taxes. Simple, innit?

If Poland and its democracy was in a dire situation (God forbid) , and there was a call to arms by our Government,

..........the airports would be inundated with Poles fleeing to the UK and Ireland.
Happy to fix it for you.

You are mistaking this generation for your fathers.'

January will be very, very loud, I think.

Yes. I shall be there at Gdansk City Hall and will urge all my associates to do the same. I would have thought some civil disobedience is also called for, insistence that targets, such as real demands that need to be addressed.

Even in Solidarity times the government were "willing" to sit down at the table and talk to the opposition, so there should be some form of arbitration in place here...

Oh wait - there was. It was called the TK!

FFS.

Are Polish politics alien to foreign posters here, would they be happier having the political parties that they were used to back home

No - I would vote for Labour every time "back home." The UK is rich enough for some important "social charter" to remain in place as a safeguard for their 20 per cent underpriveliged.

PIS want to take away endeavour and to bring back big government, so I would never support the left-wing here.

there is no reason for us to be hostile to one another just because of politics

Lesson learnt. I keep getting over boisterous :)

In the same way I did not join in the poll tax demonstrations within the UK, But I would be happy to pay more tax

Are you the same dolnoslask that I had nice chats with about the countryside?
All I can say is, the countryside must be blinding your thinking:) I most certainly did join the poll tax demonstrations, and many hundreds of thousands never paid a penny of that illegal tax.

The same applies here. Fight, and we WILL win. And "We" is not that illegal mob in the Sejm.

Or so is your brainwashed head thinking.

Not me. Let's wait and see how the European Parliament see the governments' political games when they meet to discuss Poland on January. Nobody would be surprised to see the financial institutions lowering Polands' credit rating as a result.

That's only for starters unfortunately, but the idiots now running the asylum think they can go back to the pre-war Poland of go it alone insularism. We all know how that went. Anything that loosens Polish ties to Western Europe must mean Putin is wishing himself a very happy New Year.

demand that the U.K. publish a real constitution and create a constitutional court which can strike down laws passed by the Parliament.

That's your problem right there. You don't absorb facts from other people's posts, because you know it all already (from encyclopedias...)
AS another poster has pointed out, we have the House of Lords to keep the government in check. Independent. Fair. Humanistic. Experienced professionals and laymen alike, people of all classes.

Poland , on the other hand now has a fledgling dictatorship. Not that you would care - because you don't live here!

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Nonsense yourself: There is no Constitutional Court in the UK to strike down legislation, in no small part because the U.K. has no actual constitution.

You are telling me? LOL. Now bugger off back to your fast food and polish your guns and stop posting on legal matters you know nothing of. I can't laugh because I hurt my ribs playing handball, so please stop the ignorance for it hurts:)

The House of Lords chastises the government as to it's more controversial legislation. Of course the government has no requirement to take heed, and on occasion it doesn't.

More often that not though, on reflection, the legislation is "Watered down". But here we have you, Legal Eagle, who is a master on all things regarding the law - even in the UK.......

Amazing. You know all. Or rather I should say, you are...........

Simple why would u take standing against pis if not for personal reasons?

We will see after New Year how many Poles go to the streets against PIS shall we? How many do you think it will be

heavy monitoring of civilians without a court order

I have a steel door fitted and two electronic gates - to keep out unwanted visitors and that includes any government agency under this scum

Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them

I have left my bible at home but let me answer that with Jesus's address from the Mount:

"All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." Which was interpreted to British schoolchildren of my time as "DO unto others, as you would have them do unto you."

However it is very hard to have any feelings of goodwill towards this government and their hate speech.

half of the honorable gentlemen siting in the House would be the highest ranks of the catholic clergy.

Very good point Librarius, that is very true.
Back to the real world, and if I didn't live here and have to suffer it, I would say the Poles have made their bed, so let them lie in it.

But people didn't vote for this dictatorial nonsense, and the populace have been conned.

So I dare to presume that they will fight the scum.
