Work / Diary of a Teacher in Poland [181]

I've written a letter to his old class teacher to ask for more background information, so we'll see if it's a 'new school' thing, or if there's more to it than meets the eye.

Great that you did that.

Our "contract" with the parents requires them to check the journal daily

Do they all have good internet access and computer literacy/general literacy?

UK, Ireland / Worst of the worst Poles emigrating to Britain? [32]

so you dont understand the bond that was struck between Poles and Brits during that time, you can spout bullshit , but you know nothing.

Very well said, Dolno. Posts like that are just trying to make trouble, where there's largely none. Just friendship, thousands of families with one foot in each country, economic co-operation and many other things.

When a million come, mostly unemployed, then not all of them are going to be fine upstanding people. However most are exactly that, people wanting to do something with their lives..

Classifieds / Polish Home Carers Needed in Colchester, Essex, UK [60]

Damn Bulgarians, they dare to work and hence torture the English

They dare to let themselves be exploited by the rich.

Either they would relocate to Bulgaria

A home care service can't.

And the amount this dodgy agency are siphoning off the workers' wages can be put to better use.

21st century reality

Reality is how you shape it. Wait until the next election.

UK, Ireland / A man from Poland stole Britain's secret nuclear submarine documents to sell to his government. [16]

if thats not a sackable offense, it should be.

He probably was sacked in the end.

those documents had nothing that could benefit Poland.

Even if they did, he'd probably have been handed over anyway - there have been a few cases like that round the world, and Britain and Poland are friendly countries.

If they didn't, he'd have been on an EAW anyway, so he'd have been extradited automatically, and that would be on the system at any airport should he enter or leave Schengen.

Classifieds / Polish Home Carers Needed in Colchester, Essex, UK [60]

Now the reality.

Now the real reality. Before the Bulgarians were there, meat factories still existed. Before these dodgy agencies like the OP appeared, home care still happened, without some bottom-feeding agency taking a cut of the money.

When the minimum wage goes up (as it will after the next election), there will still be pies and home helps. And some of the workers will still doubtless be Bulgarian.

Doesn't look too good for the dodgy employment agencies though. The OP should find an honest job, one with a future.

Travel / Bank ATMs at Warsaw Chopin Airport [8]

More or less. Some have French too.

There are some in Warsaw that also give Euros, however the rate is rarely good.

shockingly low wage.

Crap wages, especially for the home counties.

for a start you are not allowed to state nationality when you are advertising a job.

I doubt anyone who would advertise a job like that at such a wage cares about ethics or the law.

immigrant workers that have replaced them are being exploited.

Yes. It doesn't matter if a worker has crossed a border or not, exploitation of the poor by bottom feeders who profit from their labour is universal.

Travel / Bank ATMs at Warsaw Chopin Airport [8]

I've heard stories of Germans trying to withdraw money outside the eurozone and the ATMs asking for a 6-number PIN. Does this ever happen in Poland?

No, you just input your normal PIN and press 'enter'. The machines are the same as you are used to, most if not all have a German language option.

teachers and social workers have to toe the party line

Above all, they have to produce well-rounded adults, able to cope with all the future holds.

One reason Critical Thinking plays such a large part now.

a concerted effort by misogynists to get rid of women altogether.

Perhaps in your mind. Not in a music hall.

'terfs'

These exist, among second-wave feminists. SWERFS too.

I think it's a good initiative. Breaks down barriers and entertains kids.

Travel / Bank ATMs at Warsaw Chopin Airport [8]

Are the ATMs at banks inside this airport safe to use?

Yes, all of them.

Can anyone recommend a specific one?

No, they're all OK - you'll find a couple together in the right hand part of the arrivals bit. PHO and (I think) WBK. Both fine to use, however I use PKO since if you put an odd number in (say, 490 instead of 500) you'll get smaller denomination notes, useful for change.

It's a serious initiative, happening in the US and in the UK.

Only good.

I think Maggie Smith won an Oscar for it - it was her big break. About 1970 or 71.

[***watch language***]

Point taken - even the medical word for that raises eyebrows and might come up on the wrong sort of online search. If anyone wants to know what was deleted, they can just look at the wiki page about the film, which caused some discussion. I recommend the film though not for schools use.

Thinking about the dEaDINBURGH stuff, it would work well in a Polish classroom for teaching English. Now that the fashion (not sure if it's got to PL yet) is about blending language learning and critical skills work, this could actually be an excellent resource if used well. It works best for Scottish/NE England schools who can actually visit the physical place they've set up for school parties, however some of the online resources could be used well in Poland.

Work / Diary of a Teacher in Poland [181]

let's be honest there is not much choice of Scottish films

Red Road is good, though most teachers would definitely want to edit out the [***watch language***] before letting it anywhere near a school and the bit where she rubs the contents of a nodder up her biff in order to make a false rape allegation is age inappropriate for primary level (and might give criminal ideas to Kelly-Marie in year 10) yet is essential to the film's plot.

Or are they not considered Scottish enough?

Neither really. Both could be anywhere.

was filmed in almost Englandshire

Now now, we border reivers are Scots too.

There's Neds, The Angels' Share, and The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby, all good films, the last one great for infants upwards.

For kids of mid-junior school upwards, some of the interactive stuff from the dEaDINBURGH franchise is great. The Din Eidyn Corpus of novels are young adult ones (some nasty violence, no sex at all) yet readable by adults and there are interactive resources aimed at schools. Kids love zombies, and there's a lot of educational value in the critical thinking and problem solving exercises.

I doubt he (or anyone running or posting on an internet forum) would like to have to deal with a criminal case in Poland or elsewhere in Europe. Especially if he wants to go back for a visit one day.

Interesting.

Christian ... No doubt he would walk with a major limp the rest of his life if he survived the "talking to".

Only a Christian one. Aren't they supposed to turn the other cheek.

Their constitution applies in their country only. The forum is broadcasted (since that's what it legally is) elsewhere. Their constitution is just a foreign bit of paper in most of the countries (including Poland) where the forum can be read. It would protect nobody.

These days I feel like taking a shower after visiting this site

The 'alt-right' has been defeated in real life and is a thing of ridicule. Here feels like their Argentina, the place where the ex-nazis fled.

It was a resort.

They probably ignored her and pretended it wasn't their problem.

it seems to me that not a single person had the brains to contact the Polish Embassy to request urgent assistance for a Polish national in need.

I wonder if there were any other Polish guests in that hotel used by a Polish holiday company. And if so, did they notice anything unusual, and if they did, what did they do about it?

Idk tho is a travel agency responsible for tourists actions?

It depends on whatever's in the contract, meaning no.

it seems like the hotel and hospitals or at least some doc or nurse that was sent to see her did what they could

I think so too. It's a tragic story. With mass tourism there are tragedies every year at resorts. A young Brit just fell to his death from a hotel balcony only last week.

I have no doubt that you will "pass on recommendations", probably one "recommendation".

By the way, think about asking a native speaker to write it next time.
