Law / How can i get Poland residence card? Moroccan married to a Polish citizen. [16]

Yes, like when they get their laminated plastic ID card - they have to hum the anthem and hit that difficult note towards the end of each verse and only when the machine "hears" that does it actually start to print and encode the card. I know of some Poles taking singing lessons and classes to make sure they're not stuck in the office there singing it again and again or having to hum it again and again until the card office's laser printer finally detects the right semi-quaver.

If I recall correctly, they give you a form in the Foreigners' Office, and you show them your passport, marriage certificate, proof of funds, proof of health insurance, and sometimes have to supply some photos where one of your ears is visible (along with your face). You are then asked to sing the national anthem in Polish to a member of staff which is simultaneously recorded via webcam on to the Polish national computer. This clip has the words and audio and may help you with the last bit (remember to practice holding up your left hand as you sing)

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Thanks for sharing that info, Croggers.

None visible left when I checked earlier, it's also a promo I believe. Maybe I'll try another branch.

Just checked the second branch, so busy it looks like a pitch invasion - empty shelves where the cheese should be, marked at 6.99 for 240g but sadly all that's in its place is sliced meats.

Usual story for big city branches.

I wouldn't go to Lidl for this offer unless you have other shopping - chances are it's sold out.

These promos tend to sell out by the middle of day 2. This promo started on 19 Nov.

Swiatowid 200g 14- and 10-month cheddar in SOME Biedronka branches right now, again. 6.99zł

Both are pretty good.

Definitely not in all branches, so don't go especially.

News / More Poles speak English than French or Spanish! [34]

My experience in Wrocław is that many are shy to speak English, but will if you are friendly and use the phrase "can you speak a little English?"

In recent weeks, much to my surprise I found the following people to speak a level good enough to be communicative or better -- I don't mean to sound patronising when I say that btw:-

my postman, 20s (good)
my loud neighbour who I now regularly tell off, 20s (good)
lady who works at Społem on the deli counter, late 20s (good enough to understand and measure what I wanted)
girl who dropped her money in the street when I chased after her - teen (almost fluent)
man on customer service desk at the supermarket, 20s (lived in the UK for 3 years, quite good to almost fluent)
market stall greengrocer, 30s (basic phrases)
the above greengrocer's daughter - teen (very good)
market stall hardware man, 60s (very basic phrases)
market stall food product vendor man, 50s (good, he lived in the UK for a year as a student)
elderly neighbour, late 60s (basic phrases)
friend of mine's yob brother of about 40 (good)
the above's ladette-type daughter - teen (very good)
yob with scarf around his head at the bus stop asking me if the bus had already been - teen (very good)
3 different random police officers, 20s (very good, basic phrases, almost fluent)
girl in street I asked directions to Wrocław council office - teen (very basic phrases)
man in street - I asked the same, late 30s (very good)
man in street who overheard me and tried to help with directions, 20s (very basic phrases)

What's clear is that Poles understand more English than they can speak, or feel confident to speak.

Seems to me the schools/unis/language schools here are doing a great job of teaching communicative English to people. Hats off to them, I am seriously impressed. More seem to speak at least some English here than in Paris.

UK, Ireland / Domestic arguments caused by differences between Polish and English culture [109]

All new builds and extensions are visited by a building inspector at least 4 times during construction, and believe me these guys wouldn't pass it if they found something wrong. Their job and probably their mortgage would be down the pan if they got their decision wrong.

Typically building inspectors are shown one property on the estate that is supposedly up to specification. They are not shown every unit. If you think the vast majority of property in the UK is of a high standard, I really am gobsmacked.

(worth pointing out that anything built post-1990 in Poland in terms of flats are an utter joke)

I'm not sure on that -- old block I have been in has poor sound insulation between floors and other troubles. 2003 block built by Jan Bud is much, much better with just a few settlement cracks and minor water ingress to a balcony wall. In the UK, we can only dream of flats that feel and seem as well built as that one by JB.

The problems with UK housing stock are no secret. UK architects and NHF report
architectsjournal.co.uk/news/daily-news/poor-quality-housing-fuels-poverty-cycle/5216985.article

The UK's low-quality housing wastes billions of pounds a year through crime, healthcare and educational failure, a report has claimed
The NHS loses £2.5 billion every year treating people suffering from illnesses directly linked to living in homes that are cold, damp and often dangerous, according to National Housing Federation (NHF) estimates.

Interesting comments from
housepricecrash.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=177922

I have a friend who has begun stripping parts of his newish build house prior to a refit - as an engineer he is outraged by the very poor quality materials and shoddy workmanship. I managed not to smirk.

Britain's bad housing
topdocumentaryfilms.com/britains-bad-housing

He exposes the business tactics which are used to manipulate the planning process, questions the quality of houses and shows how public authorities have allowed developers control over housing policy.

Shelter write about poor quality
england.shelter.org.uk/campaigns/why_we_campaign/building_more_homes

We want to avoid repeating mistakes of the 1960s and 1970s where the quality of housing developments was sometimes sacrificed in a drive to build homes quickly.

To put it mildly!

"Poor quality" of new homes
insidehousing.co.uk/quality-and-quantity/6507606.article

Over recent years, however, there has also been increasingly vociferous debate about the poor quality of new homes. The government has tried to address this issue - local authorities now have a legal duty to consider the design quality of new developments, and planning policy statements emphasise the need for high quality homes. However, there is growing concern that the economic crisis, the housing shortage, falling land values and the associated pressure on housebuilders to retain profit margins may lead to further deterioration in new build quality.

I could go on, but am trying not to get suspended :o)

UK, Ireland / Domestic arguments caused by differences between Polish and English culture [109]

News to me after the years of building houses that wouldn't even stand up to a decent storm. I'm pretty sure the average house in the UK built in the last 20 years wouldn't stand up to an average Polish winter.

Agreed, 99.9% certain of that. Some exceptions no doubt, but on the whole...sigh.

News / Qatar Airways opens contact centre in Wroclaw! [27]

Great news from today (or actually two days ago), 50% of MPK's buses inspected actually had their registration taken away after a quick check by the ITD. 50%...

Do you mean they were mechanically unsound or that they polluted the roads? Please let me know what it was about. I am very much against the pollution caused by poorly filtered diesel exhausts -- they are potentially carcinogenic.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Is it true that the people of Warsaw -- mostly people who have moved there from other locations -- are quite unfriendly and stare at strangers? If I want high property prices and unfriendly locals, I can more easily move back to London.

Law / Online kantory in Poland [14]

Not necessarily with them, but others do go up as you suggest, sometimes on a hundred quid and above but not on amounts that are much below that. For serious amounts of money, people can convert through specialist brokers but individuals need to be aware that if the broker goes bust then they lose their money forever, eg telegraph.co.uk/finance/currency/8138466/Police-probe-Crown-Currency-Exchange.html

UK, Ireland / Domestic arguments caused by differences between Polish and English culture [109]

yesterday my Polish man told me that if a woman in Poland was as bossy as me she would get a slap.

You've dumped him in the past 24 hours?! I thought he was some time ago, or do you get through several packets of Polish men a week like biscuits?

Don't get me started on the alcohol issues, the other little cultural difference.

You girls are having a right old goss about men, now eh! It's like the snug in the Rovers' Return at the moment!

W.BRYTANIA 511 515 100 GBP

That's pretty amazing - your kantor is buying GBP for 5.11zł? Best here locally today is 4.98 or maybe up to 5.05 if you sell them over 500zł

Ever tried negotiating with them? They will normally negotiate very very well on amounts over 100 Euro. For serious amounts (ie, at least 20k) - you can ask the bank to negotiate. Most banks will have specialist units that can offer competitive rates - the best I've seen from BZWBK was a margin of just 0.075gr on the interbank Euro rate.

Good advice. Haggle!

News / Qatar Airways opens contact centre in Wroclaw! [27]

Politics in Poland has always, always worked on the basis of who can smear the others as much as possible rather than actually being based on reality.

Well, I don't know enough about the situation here, but I do hear a lot of people telling me that some parties play dirty in Poland. But they do in many countries, I think. (To their shame of course. Nobody should enter politics unless they are 100% trustworthy and put citizens first, says moi, incredibly naively.)

I voted for him myself last election. But oh how the tides have turned.

As I said above, I don't know enough about things here, but I can confirm others that I speak to casually here also don't seem a fan of his any more although they don't sound massively disenchanted but all the same they make it clear he ain't all that.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

nothing to do with housing

Perhaps the poster was passed a misleading bit of text with that link or they just scanned the article and saw the phrase Europe's crisis continues to drive builders outside their home markets. which of course only means domestic/internal to Poland construction rather than anything to do with people's homes or residences.

However, locally to me there seems to be yellowing for sale banners on some older houses, and quite a few flats up for sale in the secondary market - and loads of new builds in the pipeline. That said, this city seems to be getting very busy with lots of new faces from around the world, so maybe those new builds will find owners after all.

If the electorate are content, isn't that what wins votes and retains his power? Ipso facto he is doing something right, non? Not that I know him at all, but just sayin'.

Law / Can't get a social security number/PESEL in Poland (I'm from UK) [56]

The system is ridiculous.

Seems that way!

Thank you for taking the time to post!

I am wondering whether if I ever get my PESEL, it will then allow me to do some paid freelance work because every firm I approached was either disinterested in hiring me or would only give me work if I had a NIP or PESEL. If I can be self-employed or freelance with just a PESEL and no NIP, then I wonder whether I'd still have to pay 300zł ZUS each month whether I made a penny or not. No problem paying tax here based on what I earn, but very hard to start a business when there's a a prescribed ZUS fee payable every month come rain or shine. In the UK, a small business does not have to pay National Insurance or tax if earnings are low (for NI it's called the Small Earnings Exemption certificate and a trader applies for it from the UK DSS).

Life / Christmas in Poland - commercial, religious, family get together or what? [23]

Goofy, I find all that interesting and I know a lot of forum readers who are unaccustomed to Polish traditions would also enjoy reading your post.

I don't believe in any of that religious stuff at all, but I can appreciate the atmosphere and special memories created when friends or families sit down and spend time together for an event in their calendar. I think that's well worth having, priceless really.
