USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

it seems pretty gloomy to me, I call that being a workaholic, it seems weird that you just can’t relax

you seem pretty young, convinced that grass is greener... and all that.
I don't think I'm gloomy at all. It just takes more for me to be entertained. I like to be a bit more engaged than looking at pretty sights and picking out my next meal.

I've done sailing and fishing, empty beaches, tropical paradises, and believe me, there is a reason why most of the expats there drink themselves to sleep every day.

Partying gets old pretty quick. One needs a purpose.

lol
and the moral is, don't race to get rich and retire too fast. Every 'rich' person I ever asked, looked back at the stuggle to get there as the good times.

How is that?

i like to travel to new places too

even traveling loses its luster when you don't have a purpose. When I travel, I avoid the hotels and all the tourist traps. I rent a house and right away start scheeming about what would it take to live there and not be bored.

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

It's true, but i don't wanna work all my life.

you just never know what's going to happen.. I don't count on my 401K anymore.
I can't imagine what I would do if I didn't work. You got to do something! I think I'd be a stoned alcoholic within 3 months.

can you be my financial advisor, please?

I always thought that was Polish in me, hating to buy anything on credit. When I did, it was for the shortest term possible. I paid off my house by clearing out all my savings, just to stick it to the insurance companies. Since then, I'm saving close to 10 grand a year just on insurance alone. Added bonus is loads of excitement every hurricane season!

I took the wise step of messing up my credit early,

lol
I'm completely debt free. When the economy took a dump and I was freaking out about loosing my job, I paid everything off; house, car, credit cards.. scaled down, have not taken a serious vacation trip in over two years. Still squirreling money away...

Then there is the school whose motto is: the one that dies with the most debt - wins.
Sometimes I wonder..

Is it really so impossible to live without TV set in the US? ;)

I should have said internet access... ;)
But, it's all relative.. in Florida, for example, it's possible to live even without a home!
My definition of true hardship is not being able to work for extended amount of time.
I don't even consider those that are losing their houses as true hardship. I've watched that whole process - people were buying houses on a bet that their prices will keep rising, then when the sh1t hit the fan they simply stopped paying their mortgage, got themselves number of months of free rent before reposession, and now they are free to go wherever they want.

You're 2nd point however, for a long time hardships often were only visited upon those who were asking for it.

I disagree. Most of the true hardships here I know of personally are started with an illness or an accident.

you guys just love to pat yourselves on the backs, and are convinced that hardships are visited only upon those that are asking for it. That kind of arrogance would be well served with a bit of bad luck of your own.

I ALWAYS had at least 5 G's

I don't think I understand what you're trying to say. The 5Gs you have in the bank, you want cudos for that or are you trying to convince me that it is the norm? Don't you live with your parents?

You do realise that average US consumer is in red on credit cards debt alone, right? And the only way they might see couple of G's all at once is from their income tax return, right?

couple of G's cash

I think you're missing the point. There is no cash to be had.
I had the same attitude you had, untit I volunteered to do her budget.
If you consider having a cell and a cable living beyond ones means, then I guess she does.

I don't know where you guys live (I've heard of Poles living on dog food to send more money back home, I don't call that living), but around here, living on $1800 a month does not leave any money in the bank. Unless, one shares the apartment, or has mortgage paid, or car paid off, or has a sugar daddy, or can live without TV, phone, car, AC, heat or ... booze (booze is $40 a month allowance. No weed. ) ;)

I have a friend who is always broke, so I sat down with her to help her do her budget.
She makes $13/hr, and after adding up all of her bills like rent, electric, water, gas, phone, cable, car insurance, car payment, etc.. she has $200 a month left for food, fuel, clothes, entertainment and all other incidentals. Hardly enough, forget about saving anything. She will never get out of the hole she's in...

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

Politics aside, my stages in a new place are ususally backwards from the ones listed.
First one is always "What the hell did I do? This is a nightmare! How can I back-paddle without loosing face and a sh!tload of money??"

Then, it's "I'll try it for x number of months/years. I can do this as long as I can keep my mouth shut and my mind open".

After that it's "hmm.. this is not so bad".
And the last one, when it's time to move on, is "I don't want to go! I love it here!"

Life / Legal Graffiti Walls in Poland? [45]

a friend of mine (whos 12-foot burner I have on my pool-room wall), knows all the fines and restitutions for each particular freight company train trailers. He targets the ones that only require repainting, in case he gets caught. ;)

Life / All Saints' Day in Poland - Commemoration or Carnival? [44]

One does not appreciate it until it's gone...
Today after work I stopped to get a candle (at spanish bodega) and went to a local cemetery to light it up. It was a very sad affair. Not one candle lit, all forgotten tombstones. I took one picture.

Love / Being Taken For A Idiot by my Polish girlfriend? [37]

you could be doing something wrong. Maybe being indiscrete, to forward, not forward enough, I don't know, but it wouldn't be the first time the guy is clueless when the woman thinks all the signs are laid out clearly before him.
