Travel / Zakopane for Sylvester - is it time to book now? [32]

The only other place that is interesting in the area is Białka Tatrzańska.

that's where I go skiing but I have never spent time there apart from on the slopes.

funny how with so many great places in the polish Tatras, everybody decides to go to Zakopane which is the most crowded, pain in the a55 place at that time...

went to Zakopane for NYE a few times... it was fun, we went hiking, my tips of my hair froze, kulig & wódeczka+baran with highlanders... very recommended experience... :)

Pfffft, women! I give up ;p

these places are well known in PL...and it's awesome there...

Not as well known as the big "Z", they really did well for themselves.

i'll probably celebrate this time on the Krakow's Main Square... ;)

Cool, it's also expensive and crowded but it's great!

Its only because, we like 4 hour traffic jams and paying over the top.

:)

I live close enough to Zakopane and I wouldn't go there but I do like it off season.

how about Poronin, Koscielisko (close to Zakopane), Szczawnica, Bukowina...?

PGTX is right, there are loads of places that are equally as good as Zakopane around the area but are less known.

good infrastructure

They can't build the motorway to Zakopane because there are too many illegally built houses.

I think the best bet would be to look at the towns around and outside Zako, 1.Because they are less commercial 2. Will have a more "Polish" style NYE.

Yeay me! :)

Isn't NYE about drunken crowds lighting fireworks and counting down before they pass out?

*note to self avoid Roznów and Talin this NYE* ;)

*Note to self, add Texas to the list;p*

Great! If you haven't already, a wonderfully romantic activity is to take a horse drawn sleigh with torches at night time through the forest in the mountains....She'll love it ;)

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

In all seriousness, the Krakow market is like Prague - oversaturated and full of people willing to work for nothing, just to get some income.

History / EU or Russian Empire, who taking/took more from Poland and Poles? [40]

Russia on the other hand, took countless millions into their labour force (gulag system) be it during the Czar or Commie system. ;)

That's just beautiful, in a sick and distorted way, which makes it absolutely on topic :)

what i know from history, Russian Empire took some number of Poles and relocated them to Siberia. Is there any specific number?

The ones who actually survived the journey?

First rail transport of Polish soldiers left Rembertów for Siberia on March 25, 1945. It consisted of more than a thousand people, of whom some 25% died on the way. The dead were carried to a special rail car, attached to the last one. It was forbidden to bury them as, according to Soviet regulations, the number of people at the destination had to be the same as the number of people at the starting point.

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

may avoid being thwarted by an IMF incursion.

What changed your mind?

it is unfair to understate Poland's key future role by pointing to present shortcomings.

True, I think you can at present only compare Poland to other ex-communist countries to get a real idea of really how far they've come.

Law / Threatened to serve papers if I don't remove a review about a renting company in Poland [62]

I called the guys and they were so jolly unhelpful, rude and unreliable (they said they would send me an e-mail to confirm the booking, but it never came, despite me calling them several times),

This will show up on your telephone bill, including times and dates.

Today I received an e-mail from the company threatening me they would serve me papers through their lawyers if I didn't remove the negative review.

Keep all documentation including emails about what happened.

Real Estate / Poland real estate transaction prices higher than at the beginning of 2010 [28]

we do 2015 +

You know that every year the Euro is only two years away.

It's like the sign on a pub saying "free drinks tomorrow" :)

Of course they will have to join, it is part of the deal but we don't know when.

The Maastricht Treaty originally required that all members of the European Union join the euro once certain economic criteria are met. Poland meets 1 out of the 5 criteria.

News / EU presidency to cost Poland 110 million euro [33]

In some aspects EU is a joke...

And in others it is a very real and seriously good for Poland. The freedom to travel and work and the billions being pumped in to the country.

News / EU presidency to cost Poland 110 million euro [33]

Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will spend 110 million euro during the country’s EU presidency in the second half of 2011.

Can they take it out of the 67.3 Billion (milliard for the Poles) that the E.U. is giving Poland?

And that's only funds available in the years 2007-13, there is and was more...

there will be a shortage of accommodation for visiting delegations to Poland during that time.

I have a spare bedroom if they're stuck.

Is the EU presidency worth 110 million euro?

First good question you have asserted.

It is indeed a prestigious thing but still i don't think it would make any diffrence on Polands impact in europe.

Yes, countries need to feel empowered in the E.U. not dominated.

Real Estate / Poland real estate transaction prices higher than at the beginning of 2010 [28]

The inventory that sits on the books of real estate agents for longer than a month , is inventory that is struggling to find a buyer, there could be a number of reasons for this, more likely the price is too high or work needs to be done.

Definitely.

It is probable that when PL enters the single currency, it will be around 3.5 PLN

Ah, come on, we don't even know when that'll be...

Milky, I mentioned in another thread, I do not believe we will see the doom and gloom you predict,

Way to go, ruining someone's Saturday night ;p

Couldn't be arsed,

Translation: "can't".

I only asked a question

Nope, you made two statements above that you "can't be arsed" finding any link whatsoever, even though:

this is the view, that is generally held by all logical thinking people

.
You live in Ireland and have no real knowledge of Poland, I have always asked you for links, that's all I want, something of substance from you.

Real Estate / Legal questions about dividing a property in Poland [19]

If it were me, I'd run a mile.

I see from your other thread that you only intend on staying there for 6 weeks of the year.
You will find it easier, cheaper and you'll probably live longer :) if you just rent.

News / Giant Jesus Rising in Świebodzin ( Tallest in world ) [323]

it might be better if the head were a viewing platform.

Or a restaurant (bread and fish) in his ear, that'd be cool.

The message is simple: This is Poland. This is a Jesus Country, so phunk off!

Is that meant as irony?

no, i want a statue of Rydzyk or Kaczynski's welcome visitors to our beautiful and sane country...

Or a statue of me :)
it could happen, you never know... two thousand years from now, when a religion is made from PF and I am seen as the enlightened one, of course.

their money?

yes, their money.

In the summer of 2008, assembly of a giant statue of a crowned Jesus Christ began on the outskirts of the town. Intended to serve as a future site of pilgrimage, the statue, similar in design to the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, is being erected on a hill and will be nearly 100-feet-tall. Construction of the statue is being funded through collections by local people.

so their just wasted it... instead of a Jesus statue, they should make Rydzyk and co. states...

Why?

COMMON the town is too small.

Says you and only for now.

omg! what's next?!! instead of giving the money to a charity, to poor and hungry children etc, they are building yet another useless statue!!!
just to **** you off...

it's their money, they can do what they want with it.

Tourists? maybe one or two Pilgrims will visit the place.

I think you drastically underestimate what something like this will bring to the town.

I just don't see the point of building it in a small and unimportant town. Krakow would be my chooice.

You all seem to miss the point.
Here we have a little known town, with the "world's biggest" Jesus in Poland.
Poland is a country where hundreds of thousands of people go on long pilgrimages every year.
Put the two together and you have a town that will become much bigger and prosper.
I think it's clever.

Although my Jesus bot destroying down town Tokyo is better ;)

This statue is actually a huge mechanical robot that will wreak havoc in downtown Tokyo but first Świebodzin.

The second coming is here and he's gonna kick arse!

UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

Of coarse there was, the Celts were there long before the Romans and then later the Anglo-Saxons. And there were peoples on the islands well before the Celts, who also built stone buildings.

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

Sounds like a good deal.

The Athlone project, which has yet to gain planning approval, involves shipping 2,000 Chinese workers to build a "Chinese hub" of factories on a 600-acre stretch of land outside the County Westmeath town that will eventually employ 8,000 Irish staff.

What's wrong with this, Milky?

I remember Mary Robinson, when she was United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights spoke out against doing business with China on humanitarian grounds. Is that what you mean?
