UK, Ireland / English teenager refused service at Polish shop [87]

Some would call it emphasis, jonni

All of the guy's posts were trolling.

I would like to see a record of that refusal.

So would I. Probably there was no refusal on the grounds of nationality.

When reactions like that become known, you can expect reprisals.

To me, it sounds like some sort of Vicky Pollard mouthing off to a shopkeeper and trying to make a big deal of it.

Contact Humberside Police who sent a 'Community cohesion officer' EH?

Which means the police were involved but there were evidently no grounds for prosecution.

Or The Goole Times and ask them?

A respected journal of record no doubt. I must stop reading the Telegraph and switch to the Goole Times. :P

fiercely ANTI BRITISH but we are too scared to do anything about it, how much longer can we put up with ANTI BRITISH RACISM?

Your eccentric use of capitalisation screams racist Troll!

nothing was done about this blatant RACISM. Says it all really, why do we put up with anti British racism?

We don't know the full story, especially about how the teenager was behaving or whether it was her first visit to the shop. Also Polish shopkeepers are not generally known for turning away business. The owner would have been prosecuted by now if it was actually provable racism.

Something doesn't quite ring true.

Real Estate / Do we need to get a UK solicitor or a Polish one? [19]

No, you're saying that the British Embassy will take an interest. They won't. Remember, this is the same organisation that charges over 600zl to stick a piece of paper up for 3 weeks on a noticeboard.

Out of interest, the following has just appeared on their website:

Important message for British Nationals Getting Married in Poland
The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed the British Embassy in Warsaw that the Polish government is reviewing whether local authorities can accept Certificates of No Impediment issued by our office. We are working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to resolve this issue as a matter of urgency. Until further notice the Consular section will be unable to accept and process applications for Certificates of No Impediment. Please monitor our website for developments.

So if anyone's getting married, better not order the flowers just yet.

I also noticed that the price to renew a passport (mine's finished) is 124.50 in pounds or 598zl. But at today's rate 598zl is 137.47 pounds. Con artists. Presumably we're paying for their Ferrero Rocher chocolates at the Ambassador's reception.

Work / Are you teaching English in Poland? [120]

Student

Get qualified before you start taking people's money for lessons.

Otherwise you'll:

a) struggle to do it well - do you understand absolute basic heuristics like PPP or TBSL? What's the difference between stative and dynamic verbs? What are the rules for mixed conditionals?

b) be disappointing to people who are paying for a teacher rather than a student
c) earn very little - certainly no more that $1000 and probably MUCH less
d) work at the bottom end of the market and be at the mercy of the dodgiest and nastiest Polish employers
e) undercut and undermine people who do it as a profession

Check out ESL cafe - they have a good Poland section.

Real Estate / Do we need to get a UK solicitor or a Polish one? [19]

Also do we need to get a UK solicitor to help or a Polish one?

You need a Polish solicitor. I can happily recommend a firm I've used here in Warsaw - some of their staff speak English, they are very efficient and they are not too expensive. PM me if you'd like contact details.

Real Estate / Are the tenants responsible? - question about renting property in Poland [13]

we are contemplating just throwing back the keys and telling her where to go as this is at the end of a long string of problem

I would leave, and make sure you don't pay the final rent in full (maybe leave mid month) or the water bill at all - the flat's owner needs to learn a lesson.

If she's charging top dollar to non-Polish tenants, she has to be shown understand that she must provide something better than Polish levels of service.

UK, Ireland / Banks in Poland won't accept blemished UK notes [14]

Of course blemished notes are still LEGAL TENDER,

Only at the bank's discretion. And not abroad.

In Poland, there have been various changes in currency over the years plus hyperinflation so they are quite conservative. Also, pound notes are money in the UK, but foreign currency in PL. Worth being careful about.

The thing about notes with writing on has changed for the better over the years. PKO (SA or BP) aren't the best place to go to - many other banks would be OK about it.

Law / Laundromats in Poland? Good business venture or not? [90]

As for your claim that Polish people are respectful of the property of others.

Quite. Hence the huge number of security guards, working in places you sometimes wouldn't expect.

If launderettes/laundromats appeared in Poland (there are actually one or two already) it's hard to imagine them without a security guard.

UK, Ireland / Cigarettes in Poland (cost, brands). The situation in the UK? [57]

Can you get John Player Blue in Poland?

Black only and only at one or two kiosks. They'd probably be as dry as f@ck due to sitting around for ages.

Lambert & Butler and B&H exist, but again nobody buys them. Marlborough are the best bet for taking back or Dunhill which are a bit cheaper.

Work / TEFL Teacher training from Poland? [18]

Some schools and organisations don't accept on-line certificates

That's true and certainly nowhere that pays well in the Middle East or Korea.

Work / TEFL Teacher training from Poland? [18]

The CELTA is generally a good course and will set you up well (but take care where you do it), the Trinity is similar, but not as widely accepted in certain countries - though it's usually OK.

Remember that the CELTA is an introductory course, and for your first job, you should choose a school that gives ongoing professional development, perhaps leading to DELTA.

Schools that recruit people without degrees and without a minimum of a CELTA are the very bottom end of the market (with all that entails) and should be at best a stopgap and are better avoided unless that is your only opportunity.

Be careful of online courses without an observed teaching component - they are OK as well as a CELTA but are not a substitute and will severely limit your employability if you have only this. Do not think of teaching English unless you have an excellent understanding of grammar - remember you are taking students' money for a professional service, and feeding a stereotype that is unfair on more professional colleagues. You would also struggle in the classroom and lose the respect of your students.

Some private language schools (including in Poland, especially the provinces) have very low pay and disreputable and unpleasant owners - the better qualified you are, the better able you will be to get work somewhere nicer and more lucrative.

Good luck!

Work / Warning - InterCollege - Teachers beware [6]

skibum

I don't know if you're registered on Dave's ESL Cafe, but it would be great if you could post on there - just repeat the post you made here. If you're not familiar with the site; it's the most widely read by EFL teachers and might help some unsuspecting person avoid going through the problems you had with this 'school'.

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

someone littering by throwing a candy wrapper on the ground hurts other people

And that is illegal too. Are you suggesting she should have got away with her crimes because of who she is? That her prosecution was somehow 'anti-polonism'?

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

there are quite a few innocent people found guilty of serious crimes in the US by the US government who spend 10, 15, 20 years etc in prison for crimes they didn't commit?

Here in Poland and everywhere else too. She however was guilty. Big crime, small crime, whatever.

Martha Stewart was mostly tried in the media

She lives in 'the media' and has made millions (you say billions) from being a media personality. Trial by media should be no surprise to her.

agreed to go to jail for 6 months

I don't think she had much choice in the matter! :-)))

And who did she hurt? You still haven't provided the names of people who said they were hurt by her.

Read my post. Insider trading hurts the other shareholders, the employees and the creditors. You want me to "provide the names" of their payroll?

I'm sure that even if she didn't have this stock trading scandal, you would still be knocking her for something.

Why do you say that? I've neither seen her TV show or read her books, but generally like what I've heard. However she is an unknown here in Poland.

If that’s the case than 99% of the Wall Street is guilty of the same crime

Somewhat less. If that were true though, what does it say about Wall Street.

and no one ever prosecuted

Are you mad? How many people a year are prosecuted? Many. Governments take it seriously.

besides she was never convicted of insider trading but lying to an investigator about a stock sale

That makes it better?

if it cannot find any other charge that will stick

And they made it stick. Conspiracy, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to federal investigators. All of them done by her own free will.

Who’s Pawned!! Now punk.

You!!

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

First I hear of it,

Check it out

Besides he can’t be a Jew since it is your argument that one can’t be Polish because he is in America.

Who said that? Not me.

Using your own logic, if someone born in some other country is simply that then a Jew born in Poland is not a Jew but a Pole, neither a Jew born in America or anywhere else in the world can call himself a Jew

Polish is a nationality, Jewish is a nationality and a religion and a discrete ethnic group.

How quick and noble of you to point out someone’s simple mistake

Or simple lie.

yet failing to show her to some of us who might not be aware of her achievements as to who she really was

That would be very off-topic and liable for deletion. But if you learnt how to use the search facility you would find a thread about Polish women scientists, in which every poster was "failing to show" this person's achievements.

Didn’t you know that selling your own stock is a serious crime in Jewish mind

Selling it as a result of insider information the day before it falls 16% is a crime in most people's minds, as well as in the statute books of her country.

Pwned!

Martha Stewart commited a SERIOUS CRIME?

Yes. She was indicted by the US government on nine counts including charges of securities fraud and obstruction of justice. She was jailed for this.

a witch hunt agaist Martha Stewart and everyone knows it.

By whom and for why?

Who did she hurt??

The other stockholders and potentially the company's employees and creditors.

Her only "crime" was she denied letting the prosecutors know how well she knew the owner of the Bio-tech company she had stock in.

Actually she sold the stock on the basis of insider information the day before it fell 16%. And then lied about it to her own government. Being a billionaire brings responsibilities.

And even if she was guilty

Yes, she was guilty.

But since you have a grudge against Polish people

What makes you think that? Because I pointed out that Martha Stewart is a criminal and not a good example to cite?

You're just another Polish-Hater putting a magnifying glass on anything negative about Poles to try to bash them.

What a strange and laughable thing to say!

Polish-Hater putting a magnifying glass on anything negative

So you're happy for Poles to be judged by false examples?

mited a SERIOUS CRIME??? LOL!!!!

some MILD OBSCURE stoc

Your odd use of capitals shows you up to be a nut.
