Travel / Cheaper Flights to Poland [50]

If the city of your destination is in Western in Poland then you may want to consider flights to Berlin, and then a train from there to one of Polish cities. It's faster (and cheaper) tan flying to Warsaw.

Love / Polish Girls vs Russian Girls [813]

In fact it would be impossible to tell who is Polish and who is Russian looking at two naked girls.

Unless you are Polish or Russian ;)

The differences could be in their views about world or past events, which is natural given that "Russia ruled other nations" and "Poland was ruled by others".

That fluctuated.
Russia was actually ruled by others longer than Poland.

History / Norman Davies - the Brit who loves Poland and becomes one of Us [250]

I would have to agree with your last paragraph darius, lenin, stalin, nikita et al dont engender many sympathetic feelings

I was being very polite towards the fore mentioned personalities when I wrote that. To be more truthful, mine and my family's experience, as well as the experience of millions of other Poles don't much room for a separation of Russian approach towards Poland from that which lead Nazi Germany to exterminating so many Poles. To many Poles (especially those who are old enough to remember) Russia ~ Nazi Germany

Russia is to be feared. At least in the foreseeable future, so I think the only correct policy Poland can have towards the bear is one suggested by a not so nice Polish saying: don't stir **** so it won't stink. (jak gówna nie ruszać to nie śmierdzi)

History / Norman Davies - the Brit who loves Poland and becomes one of Us [250]

He does get a bit simplistic and one sided when it comes to Russo-Polish relations, neutrality on this is not his strong point, maybe he is just trying to "out Pole the Poles" as many immigrents do in the new country they love.

I disagree. I heard Davies speak a few times in a manner that some Poles might not necessarily appreciate. For instance Davies thinks that some Polish historians (and many Poles in general) over-romanticize Poland and Polish history along with various events it lead to, or resulted from. (btw. I agree with him)

Is there really a lot of good to say about Soviet policies toward Poland between 1919 and now? If things appear one side in his books, could that be that he is actually telling the truth as closely as it is possible? Remember, for a big chunk of that period we're talking about Stalin, then Khruschev and their followers - not much nicer fellas.

Do you think there are enough pure English left to throw Normans out of the Island?

News / What is wrong with Poland that Poles emigrate? [167]

Its alright for all these Polish people - going home will lots of money. Where can us (The British go?) Its hard for us to live in another country and we have to live on low wages nowadays.

I'd like as many Brits as possible to come over to Canada. Plenty of space here. Come over, especially if you are an enterprising type.

Poles arent about intergrating into out society , they bring there own culture , throw it in our faces, use the U.K's "soft touch" appeal for there own uses and then go back to poland with the profits...kinda sounds like your examples of other countires.

I had a chucklel when I read that :)

Off-Topic / Do politicians need to speak a foreign language? [15]

Have you ever seen Tony Blair or George Bush speaking fluently any other language?

Actually, I have always Bush speaking a foreign language and he has been always fluent. I could understand the words but I couldn't make any sense out of them.

Life / Famous Polish music and musicians [48]

Have you heard of Norden

Great tunes, but... their instruments sound much better than their vocal.
It maybe actually good that the vocal drowns in the music, but still, their sound engineer could use some help form a pro.

News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

A question asked by an American woman at a sight of two Polish construction workers (working on her house) reading a Polish newspaper during lunch break:

can they really read?

A question by a Texan woman at the sound of my accent:
Do all Poles speak with British accent?

USA, Canada / What do Polish people think of the USA [287]

We like private health insurance because we have choices.

It looks like you never had much of a health problem. Good for you and I wish you all the best.

But... ask around and see what people have to say. The insurance company will eventually find that a bad case of flu (you may have had years before you make a new claim) could have influenced your current condition. Under such circumstance, if, at the time of signing up for a new health insurance policy, you did not include every single minor malady you may have suffered your health insurance claims may be worth less than the paper they are written on. Add to that all the treatments that insurance companies may deem experimental and you now have a pretty good picture of your choices: keep your house or get the medical care you need.

USA, Canada / Canadian wanting Polish Citizenship? [30]

If only one of your parents is Polish born in Poland - you are also a Polish citizen

If only one parent is a Polish citizen then the child's citizenship is not necessarily automatic. That is actually the parents' decision which citizenship the child will have. A child in this situation may, however, apply for the Polish citizenship if he/she is between 16 and 17 years and six months of age. After that, it is all an individual case. Persons whose only one parent has Polish citizenship are treated favorably in respect to their Polish citizenship applications.

Note: don't treat the above as legal advice. Call Polish consulate/embassy to make sure all the details are clear.

How easy is it to obtain a Polish passport if your grandparents were Polish born (parents were Canadian born)?

There is a "citizenship continuity" principle in the Polish law. That means that: if your grandparents (from both the mother and the father side) were Polish born then their children are automatically Polish citizens. If this applies to your situation then you are a Polish citizen.
