Life / WOULD YOU MOVE BACK TO POLAND IF.... [73]

Chinese are also bad ppl?

there is a large Chinese population in Toronto that works twice as hard as the average white person getting an education and advance themselves within the Canadian society, so Rychlik might have a problem with that. Chinese are very competitive, hard working, ambitious, resilient etc and they may be perceived as a threat to those who are not, or who are. It is a sheer number thing at the moment since half of uni students are Chinese.

As far as I know Rychlik is a uni student, but I am not sure.

Study / Polish schools and Polish educational system level in your eyes [135]

and pretty much anyone can decide to go the university path.

that is not true, the early selection starts in primary school I believe and children either to to highschool and later to uni, or they go to trade schools.

The problem is most definitely quantity over quality in Poland.

that is true, but during the communism getting a uni degree was only for "elites". Secondly, the was limited space at unis.

Just have a word with any professors and ask them what's going on with the system.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the system besides the fact that the system itself was always on a mediocre level(not comparable to the non- Communist unis, except maybe for USSR and at present anybody can finish uni, while in the past there were some standards in order to keep it elitist and all unis during the communism were political, therefore some profs should not be even teaching at the moment, since they got their degrees because their political believes.

It's really a shame that such a strong university culture has been destroyed by the notion that everyone needs a degree to work.

There was no university culture comparable to the West in Poland during the communism and there isn't anything like that at present.

The only difference is: Unis are allowed to make money, so they bring in as many students as possible - eg. the part time students in particular.

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people importing a new wave of ancient racism into the UK? [402]

It's always a legitimate question to ask these people why they are in Europe, asking this doesn't make people racist.

that is a strange question to ask, since the answers are obvious.

If a white man would rape a coloured woman, left-wing people would cry about racism on the rise and would demand tougher punishment and a ban on anti-immigration parties.

that was happening for centuries during the colonization process. Had a different name at that time: beded.

So tell me. Why do men in general rape women?

UK, Ireland / The slow, whiny death of British Christianity [86]

It sounds like the churches are different in the U.S. ? Don't they have things like this overseas?

those are probably called megachurches, a fairly new phenomena in the US.

In my opinion religion serves some basic human needs: sense of belonging, sense of hope, need for having sense in life, the need for guidance, and finally, religion is a large degree a tool of social control. All those things are needed within the society, otherwise there would be a total chaos.

For those who are interested, the sociology of religion is something to look into.

not really, Soki, Irons, Rychlik and Davie represent minority and besides Soki(who spent half of his life in the US), they all live outside of Poland.

I guess that in your country NOTHING bad is happening right?

well, some of the Australian backwaters are quite scary, but Sheila does not travel there.

I like Sheila's acid and dramatic style of writing.

Life / WOULD YOU MOVE BACK TO POLAND IF.... [73]

So would you seriously think about moving back to Poland if you knew you might become a white minority in your current host country?

the is the beauty of Canada, isn't it, but why don't you move to a small town- Oshawa - it is all white and lots of rednecks there- you might fit right in.

Food / Why is it that some Polish people refuse to eat anything that is not Polish? [120]

not exactly a recipe for diversity in the kitchen, or the rynek for that matter.

not really although I am sure that Poles like to experiment in the kitchen, the problem is that the choice in stores in very limited and when I want to cook something I have to bring stuff from Canada eg. spices. I remember when I wanted to make Comsmopolitan Martini once for my sis and there was no cranberry juice.

i'm not a big beef eater, when i lived in the states i ate beef maybe twice a month, sometimes less.

maybe polwedwica wolowa would be good, but the one I saw was little tiny piece, I just gave up after that. Poles overcook most of their meals too and I cannot eat stuff like that, because it has no taste left.

I was at a Mexican restaurant in Wroclaw 2 weeks ago.

oh, I can imagine that. I don't really recall a similar experience, but I just usually don't eat ethnic food in Poland when visiting.

and sure, maybe there's "a place" somewhere in warsaw where they do a good job of it, who knows, but i don't live in warsaw, most poles don't live in warsaw......

so true. When I was in Szczecin I noticed that most ethnic restaurants were closed down anyways. So that probably proves that Poles in general prefer to eat their own food.

Good beef? Eh, Aberdeen Angus is probably the best in the world. Ask anybody in the meat selling business in America. I've also tried Kobe gyu (beef) and it was impressive. Still Aberdeen Angus gets the nod ahead of it.

I know that, can you find Angus beef in Poland though. I think they don't even rise those special cows - there is a long history of raising good quality beef in Scotland and I am not denying it.

Try some fish from the North Sea or the Moray Firth. Since when has fish not been good food? It's healthy and good for the brain :)

what is this? a competition? Is is because I said that Scots know nothing about food? I take my word back - but I have a Scottish friend and his taste for food is just beyond anything I have ever seen. He can eat anything and will not see a difference:).

As for soups, Poland can hardly claim to be much better though I still put Poland as European champion.

I hear yah. What can I say - my Scottish friend is horrible, but I guess I made a mistake of painting Scots with the same brush, which was silly of me.

News / New cross war in Warsaw [530]

the article I've posted is really sad - it shows that many of those ppl have real prblems and they just there not to defend the cross, they are just in the desperate to manifastete their problems. read the article if you know polish

I have, there are four people from all walks of life, as for shame, there is nothing to be ashamed of, especially those grannies: they are who they are and they belong to Poland as well.

Travel / Places to stay near Zwierzyń (Lesko area) in Bieszczady Mountains. [4]

then google Zajazd Karino in Berezka. Another option would be staying in Lesko or in Zwierzyn, but I cannot recommend any places there.
Or Polanczyk.
Berezka is on a main route and if you have a car it might be a good option to explore the area. I belive that most places worth visiting are within and hour or more of a drive from there. I stayed there and it worked for me.

Food / Why is it that some Polish people refuse to eat anything that is not Polish? [120]

i'd love to go to Toronto. never been, but i'm sure they have some great places to eat.

and for what it's worth, i know what you mean about every corner of th

it is not a bad place with over 50% population whose first language is not English, so there is a huge demand for ethnic food, therefore the high quality and choice.

and for what it's worth, i know what you mean about every corner of the world. I grew up in the NY/NJ area so I was completely spoiled with absolutely amazing food. asian food is just ridiculous there, along with Italian. Mexican is also completely awesome in the tri-state area.

so you know that so called "ethnic" food experience in Poland is nothing in comparison to that:). This is one of the reason I would not pay 70 PLN for it, but I have in the past when visiting Poland and decided that I rather have pierogies next time:)

I dig Poland. As much as I **** and moan about stuff on here, I really do dig the place, but MAN do I miss the food back home in the states.

I hear yah..........:)
PS. Delphi is a Scot - they know nothing about what good food is all about;P (there is some truth to it)
PS. what I miss in Poland is good beef;(. I tried to make a roast the last time I was there, but boy oh boy, never again.

do you read Polish, since I have some info in Polish and can recommend Zajazd Karino -(google it) in Berezka(large village on the route) run by my family members, however I don't know the distance from Berezka (15 km from Lesko) to Zwierzyn. Are you renting a car, since you will need one there.

Food / Why is it that some Polish people refuse to eat anything that is not Polish? [120]

stick with that good ole' home cookin'.

so true, ethnic food is not cheap in Poland and as for Szczecin, besides probably the good fish Polish restaurant Chief, there is nothing really good to eat.

I have never tried Bombay food. I just returned from there 4 weeks ago and besides poor quality Chinese, some Pub food there is nothing really impressive. I had Kaczka in W-wa in Stare miasto - it was OK, but my family members are much better cooks.

Occasionally one can have a good meal in a restaurant run by some Poles who happen to be good cooks, but those places are not famous, yet there are many of them. I personally like home cooking because I like fresh food.

PS.

Fuzzy, are you in Szczecin?

OH, that's just because you don't have any money aphrodisiac! surely if you made as much money as ME, you'd be able to afford all the fantastic food in Szczecin.......;)

oh, well, that is too bad, but I don't know anybody who likes to pay for mediocre quality. I still think that in Poland the best food one can get in Polish restaurants, unless one is in a place where there are many good ethnic places. Just because somebody is from China does not make him a good cook. I like fresh and tasty food. I eat out a lot in Canada btw and one can come across variable quality. The latest ethnic meal I have had was in a Vietnamese place, but I went there because the place was busy and the customers always know who cooks well.

sorry man, I couldn't resist. it truly amazes me that more people don't call out that guy on the nonsense he writes, but I guess posts such as your last one indirectly have the same effect. nice work. glad to see the moderator finally stepped in tonight as well.

well, he does not live in Toronto like me, where the choice of ethnic food is amazing. We have restaurants from every corner of the world and if one finds a good deal and eats well at the same time that means that the person is a well seasoned culinary tourist;), ha, ha...

No, i'm not in Szczecin. why?

just curious:)

Not from that newspaper. It's one of the most left wing new lie-bour mouthpieces you will ever get.

that is how I read it, regardless of the author intentions.

what is your point anyway?

that alcoholism is wide spread.

Life / Why Aren't The Shops in Poland Open on Sundays? [82]

Jeszcze się z głodu nikt nie zesrał.

there is nothing funny about being hungry, my sugar level goes down and I get very nasty.

Easy.

that is what I was saying.

What's not easy to do in Canada is to get a beer at 2am. Very important for an alcoholic. It all takes a bit of planning, and that's every night. If the drunks can do it every night, surely consumers can do it 10 days out of the year.

this went right over my head.

gotta go, hungry mind is useless.

What the problem for Russian, Belarusian or Ukrainian person to pretend to be Polish

correction: other Eastern Europeans may be mistaken for Poles.

The article was a way to manipulate the readers, or reinforce the idea that indeed Polish immigrants (possibly the largest number in the UK, therefore the most visible) are becoming a menace. Nothing less, nothing more.

As for drinking in Poland, there are a lot of people who drink denaturat, Woda Brzozowa etc like stuff and you know it very well.

I am just too lazy to look through it, after all today is a holiday :D

me too:)

So what the heck would she know? :)

oh, she knows;)

We were looking at this a while back, Poland is pretty far down the list as far as public holidays go.

there you go, maybe Poles need more national holidays. Still, people have to eat, which reminds me that I am starving at the moment and all the stores are open in Canada. In fact, Canada is one big shopping mall:)

How do Poland's holidays rate against other E.U. countries? I doubt if they have even close to as many holidays as the country with the most. (hmmm if that makes sense I have the number for a good doctor:)

no idea, but as far as I know Germany has the most.

I think people just complain more about Poland on here.

my sis has always lived there, yet she is critical of certain things.

Because it's a holiday, a free day for everyone.

that was reasonable.

Buy your blessed food a day in advance and stop whining.

that was not.

* Does not apply to people working at airports, shipping companies, gas stations, fast food places...

of course it does not, my sister who lives in Poland say that there are too many church holidays, national Holidays, etc. One does not to be a foreigner to notice that some rules and regulations are just NOT practical.

No. I merely happen to understand that MY viewpoint is not necessarily the only one. Lots of people in PL are Catholic, it's their country and their religious holiday. OK? I don't share their beliefs but it's still my culture, background and heritage.

what a load of bollox Magda. Why do you have to bring superficial Polish pride into discussion about stores being closed due to religious holidays. People are hungry and they want their food, including many Poles too, who happened to forget to shop on Saturday.

Explain in reasonable terms to non- Poles why they cannot buy food. See my point?

People are creatures of habit- Poles or not.

Life / Polish people and Politeness [84]

Would you be willing to risk your job just to show some "flexibility" to a stranger?

I doubt that he would loose his job, but I cannot judge the situation since I was not there. However I would do the same as Warszawski.

He sees Russian terseness as rude, but doesn't see the Polish equally laconic style as equally rude.

I disagree with that, he was simply reporting what he saw and I have read most of his books and did not find a piece of his writing not being objective.

You just blackmailed this poor guy. I don't see why are you happy.

he had no other choice, since some of those rules are silly, such as no sleeping in Wars, which probably comes from the time, when people due to lack of seating room were dosing off in Wars on long trips. One needs to be reasonable and flexible and this guy was trying to get rid of them for sitting too long, so he started picking on the sleeping child.
