Travel / Person with Polish/Russian heritage - first time going to Poland [11]

Ah, now that explains a lot. I was wondering about that weird English and the profile details that didn't add up. Thanks.

Don't forget the destroyer BÅ‚yskawica moored at Gdynia. If you like that sort of thing, and I do, it's a treat. Good fish restaurants nearby, too.

I never much cared for the Victorian novelists - though reading 14 novels in one autumn semester, and most of those the prolific penny-paid Dickens, has much to do with my apathy

You read fourteen victorian novels, most of them by Dickens, in one semester? Are you Kim Peek? Perhaps you are a little prone to exaggeration.

No doubt you have heard of some of them?

Is that a question? I've read most of the Bernard Cornwell Sharpe tales, but as for Merlin and wizards, etc. I felt a bit old for them about forty years ago.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

I've just de-cheesed my local Lidl. Hatherwoods @ 9PLN/400gr. Can't say fairer than that. Plus a pricier mature cheddar @8PLN/250gr. Oh, and the beer: Hen's tooth, Abbot, Bishop's Finger. It's all good at Lidl today.

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

Dunno, but I'd have a tidy bet that it has. What is undoubtedly the case is that cops routinely ignore infringements by cyclists.
Come to think of it, I did hear of a case years ago where a motorist killed a cyclist and was jailed, although it wasn't his fault. I remember at the time that it was the view of the court that "someone must pay", or words to that effect. Anyone remember that case? I also think that Polish judges can be swayed by old ladies wailing in court. (I have learned this to my considerable cost this year.)

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

Why do we never see road safety ads here?

Sounds like they're just what's needed, among many other measures.

How would a Polish audience react?

With horror, I would hope.

Re: the thread title, are there any rules for cyclists in Poland? I've lost count of the number of times I've seen cops drive past cyclists riding without lights. They also ride wearing dark clothing at night, without so much as a reflector, drunk, and on the wrong side of the road. Yet if I were to hit and kill one of them, as I nearly have many times, I would be imprisoned without a doubt, and would have to pay compensation to my 'victim's' family for his 'murder'. Sorry to sound so emotive but it really gets on my tits.

Law / Advice needed on Inheriting loans in Poland, will they have to be repaid? [6]

that they now must pay because they accepted the land and property

The creditors may well have a claim on the estate, but I wouldn't worry too much about them huffing and puffing and claiming the daughters are directly responsible for their father's debts. Do you know that the creditors are actually legit? Lots of crooks and chancers out there. I'd pay a lawyer for half an hour's advice.

Food / Which Polish milk brand is closest to UK supermarket style milk? [31]

Agreed, and it's just not worth the risk drinking milk straight from the cow, although it does taste great. Having said that, for a healthy, non-pregnant adult the risk posed by unpasteurised cheese is minimal if it comes from a reputable supplier.

"In 1996 there were 516 reported food poisoning cases in the UK. 17 related to milk and dairy, none of those relating to unpasteurised cheese. Water also accounted for 17 cases." Source

thegoodsshed.co.uk/unpasteurised-cheese/

I can't vouch for the veracity of this claim, but if true, the risk seems very small indeed.

Food / Which Polish milk brand is closest to UK supermarket style milk? [31]

1993 and 2006 more than 1500 people in the United States became sick from drinking raw milk or eating cheese made from raw milk.

So about a hundred a year for a population of 320,000,000. Now where's that unpasteurised brie I've been looking forward to?

Language / Problems Polish People Have with Learning English [63]

celta.wikispaces.com/file/.../Swan+%26+Smith+Learner+English.pdf
Check this out. Swan and Smith's book tells you what problems Poles have, as well as lots of other nationalities.
I'm not Polish but I've been teaching them for a long time, so I know what problems they have. If you provide an e-mail address, I'll write to you.

Classifieds / D&D Group for Expats in Warsaw needs one more player... [69]

These are not people as we know it. They think normal life is playing games.

To be fair, don't we all like playing games? Having said that, the guys in the videos do look like dorks. I can see the attraction of wizards, etc. for twelve-year-olds, but for grown-ups poker, overflowing ashtrays and the babes bringin' in the beer is more my line. (provocative joke)

Wit which kind of cheese can you compare Wensleydale?

No Polish cheese. It's crumbly and a bit tart. I'll certainly be buying some as I'm a complete cheese monster, but not as much as the cheddar and Stilton.

Is it much different from the Hatherwood one?

For my money Hatherwood is better because I prefer mature cheddar.

Abbot Ale

Oh, yes. A great East Anglian beer, although I can't remember drinking bottle or tinned Abbot. My brother used to serve a great pint of Abbot in his pub near Wisbech, Cambs. I remember him running up and down to the cellar during thunderstorms to put wet cloths on the barrels to prevent the beer going off. As for the others it seems we are going to have an embarassment of riches. Old Speckled hen, Bishop's finger...Lidl deserves much praise for this.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

Thanks for the heads up. They have, in fact, had Valley Spire cheddar in my Lidl for the last few weeks (12PLN/400g.) Pretty good, too. If they have good Stilton at a reasonable price, I'll be a very happy herbert. My local Kaufland have a good one but it's 74PLN/kg.

Are they to be recommended?

Stilton is the king of cheeses, and Roquefort is his sublime French mistress. Wensleydale is Wallace and Gromit's favourite but not mine.

Any idea which beers?

UK, Ireland / Do Poles and EU Citizens exploit the British welfare state [129]

The vast majority of people who received unemployment benefits were sick, and disabled, as was outlined in my article.

You are lumping them all together, which is misleading. If I am permanently and severely disabled, I'm not unemployed in the conventional sense because I'm not going to get a job, ever.

Your article, even admits that 30.43 million British were employed, so what happened to the other 30 million or so?

The elderly, children, etc.

as was outlined in my article

No link to an up-to-date, reputable source was provided.

Real Estate / Advice needed on land sale in Gmina Lelkowo [3]

Agents will want 1-2% of the sale from both parties. Try to sell it privately. Also, factor in notary costs. Polish notaries were very good people in their previous life, and have returned to earth with a licence to collect large amounts of money for doing almost nothing. Unlike in other countries, they are unavoidable in Poland.

Life / Driving Offences in Poland - How Fast can you go without being arrested? ;) [56]

I long for the day that breathalyzers are installed in cars and won't start unless zero alcohol is found

Nightmare! Anyway, I can imagine an inventor quickly producing a little aerosol you squirt into the detector. I don't drink and drive, ever, but I can see how such a system could be abused or just fail.

they live at home till they're 30 with their overbearing mothers

That's about the size of it with boy racers.

Work / Native Speaker Translation Charge (Polish<>English) [12]

Are you joking?! Anybody half decent in Warsaw is going to charge 150% to 200% of that price.

If he goes through an agency he'll certainly have to pay a lot more. There are, however, translators who charge the rate I quoted (which is what agencies pay translators). As for Warsaw, well it's not the centre of the universe, is it?

I charge per hour for proofreading. That way the better the text, the cheaper it is for the client. I avoid books, though.
