Work / RELOCATING TO GDYNIA, Poland - salary question [42]

Ok thanks-So I will try to negitiate for 5800-6000 gross.

It doesn't work like that. Poland is not a rich country, so you cannot simply get whatever salary.

If you get 800eur net in Athens, then it's 3341PLN and in Gdańsk you will get 3201PLN. You will move to the city with much worse weather and less beautiful than Athens.

Decide yourself weather it has sense by looking at this page:

It's Gdańsk here, because of no data for Gdynia, but it's the same agglomeration, so only apartment prices should be little lower in Gdynia.

About salary. Average for Poland is around 4000PLN gross, for big cities perhaps 5000PLN. Most of people earn less than average.

Greece was much more expensive than Poland few years ago, but now because of the crisis renting and restaurant prices are comparable to Poland. You will pay in Poland less for grocery (in Greece they cost more than in Germany), going out to the pub, restaurant. Public transport is cheaper.

If you're not an programmer then probably the job is some call center. You should decide yourself if it's any better from what you do there in Greece. Any surplus which you theoretically save in Gdynia you will spend for tickets to Greece.

Work / Salary for a recently graduated software/computer engineer in Poland [14]

I am surprised. It seems that IT salaries in Turkey are so much higher than in Poland:

According to payscale.com median software developer salaries are 2 x lower than in Turkey and over 3 x than in Germany:

- Poland: $17,768 = 12.997 EUR ( [/research/PL/Job=Software_Developer/Salary] )
- Turkey: $33,377 = 24.403 EUR ( [/research/TR/Job=Software_Developer/Salary] )
- Germany: €42,262 ( [/research/DE/Job=Software_Developer/Salary] )

Work / Salary for a recently graduated software/computer engineer in Poland [14]

8000pln net is for top programmers with good experience in Warsaw only. For somebody with 1 - 2 years experience in Poland the salary range is what I wrote. Above it is possible only if you're working during whole studies and have considerable experience and good payed specialty. For example they pay usually low for PHP and high for ObjectiveC. And 2000 eur net is basic salary for graduate programmer in Germany. That only means that either salaries in Istanbul are so good or rather you're not average IT graduate.

Life / Is gas heat really (that much) cheaper than electric Heating in Poland? [3]

Here is comparison from 2011: tbkecoenergy.pl/artykuly/158-artyku-1

summary is here: tbkecoenergy.pl/images/jacek/artykuly/koszty_ogrz_d.png

0.24zł/kwH for gas
0.49zł/kwH for electricity
0.32zł/kwH for electricity when heated during night and agreement with electricity supplier has lower price during night.

Here somebody writes that this electric heating during night is not so expensive comparing to gas:

and here people are against because they write that night heating makes house warm when people are at work, and when they're back in the evening house i cold...

Polonia / I'm going to study in Germany (speaking English / money transfers) [24]

If you are going to transfer moneys you can use services like: MoneyGram or WesternUnion, easy to send money with minutes.

That's great idea :D This services are for people from third world countries. They're so expensive that one should use only when there is no other option. And there are many options: PayPal is free for transferring between 2 accounts. SEPA money transfer between German and Polish bank is free or costs 5zł depending on bank.

Travel / How does wizz air compare with ryanair? [32]

then it's another factor to consider. When flying without registered luggage then Wizzair is cheaper, when without then Ryanair. Another thing which everybody interested knows is that Wizzair flies to Warsaw Chopin Airport and Ryanair to Modlin next to Ryanair.

Study / The costs involved for studying at Polish Universities. Is education in Poland free? [10]

No, the courses are often completely different, and it's unlikely that most Polish professors would accept the English courses as being equal, especially at the same university.

I partially disagree on that. I think that most of professors wouldn't mind accepting courses passed in the same university, but English. Problem is that in Poland you have limited choice of courses, and usually on the 1st year no choice at all. You choose in each semester courses only available in this semester, so you cannot attend 1st semester course on 3rd semester (except if you failed an exam and repeat it). Because of that changing faculty can be problematic because of program differences. During my studies I took 1 year break. After I came back the program has changed and I had to study half a year longer in order to pass courses which were in new program, but not in old my program (they warned me about it when I was applying for the break). That required quite a lot of logistic work, creating not overlapping schedule, finding courses, getting dean permit. I don't recommend that. It's much simpler just to follow plan like everybody.

I think that Polish language is not so simple to learn in 2 years for university level. Probably it's possible, but requires 20h per week studying just the language.

In the end I don't think that it's worth changing to Polish language course. They teach the same, employee will not know if you studied in Polish or English. Only difference are colleagues. If you plan to stay and work later in Poland then it's better to have Polish classmates who can be part of your network of contact after graduation (while foreigners will simply leave Poland so knowing them will not be so useful). Also courses in Polish in top universities are more competitive, so average Polish student will be smarter there than in English equivalent :).

Regarding another discussion:

Is study in University free or paid in Poland? Who can afford going to college?

Is study in University free or paid in Poland? Who can afford going to college?

It's free in case of full time students at the public university level schools...

Work / Software Developer job in Krakow (from 6000 PLN gross to 15000 PLN gross?) [3]

I think it's little lower: from 3000 to 12000 with 5000 median and this upper level only in the capital for senior developers. 1/3 of this amount are taxes, insurances. Studio apartment in Kraków is 1500 PLN with all fees (or less further from the center). Food cost min. 500pln per month when cooking at home. Monthly ticket I guess around 80zł. Check numbeo.com

But if you searched for jobs advertised in English only, then perhaps they don't advertise the lowest payed jobs.

Travel / How does wizz air compare with ryanair? [32]

Wizzair's hand luggage is smaller than Ryanair's. Wizzair doesn't advertise lottery during flight. So if you ignore this adds, then Ryanair with the same price as Wizzair is 10 cheaper, because with Wizzair you have to pay 10 eur extra to have the same hand luggage size as in Ryanair.

Study / The costs involved for studying at Polish Universities. Is education in Poland free? [10]

Really not even from the school itself?? Don't Polish schools want to be able to say that they have students from the U.S studying within their campus? In the U.S foreign students get scholarships so the school can say they have students from over 25 countries attending.

It would be not fair if they supported foreign students, but not Polish. Anyway they don't have cash for that.

Well I already know English, but really the classes are of highly worse quality if they are taught in English?

Curses in English are to earn more money. They don't require so much on exams from foreign students as on equivalent studies taught in Polish. because they don't want to loose their tuition. They don't care about foreign students so much, because they'll live the country in the and, so will not spread opinion about the university in Polish market. And of course there must be exceptions.

Work / Advice on finding an Engineering job in Warsaw, Poland [3]

and course work finished in doctor degree course at Graduate school in south korea.

what is that? Do you have PhD? I think in western Europe it will be much easier for you to find a job. Here in other than IT industry knowledge of Polish is necessary. Moreover you probably need work permit, so it's another obstacle. Nevertheless you can try. Maybe there is some international company for which your experience would compensate lack of Polish language knowledge. I guess you can get an average salary.

Law / Landlord in Poland entitled to break in, change locks after non payment of final month's rent? [19]

By law you have to pay your rent and use dialogue to solve your problems, you can't with-hold money/rent to solve dialogue, if it went to court you would lose the case on the basis of breach of contract.

But if he does, then eviction cannot occur just after 1 month.

The landlord has the right to enter his/her property for inspection or to carry out repairs whenever they wish as long as due notice is given ( 48 hours). If it is a time when you are working they can be there themselves or appoint a power of attorney.

show your source: wynajmowaniekrakow34.blox.pl/2011/08/Wynajmowanie-mieszkania-Krakow.html

Here they say that you're right about 24h notice, but it's for inspection or repair. Changing locks is not repair.

Copying and pasting more than 100 words is not allowed,so I have removed the article.

Law / Landlord in Poland entitled to break in, change locks after non payment of final month's rent? [19]

blog-nieruchomosci.pl/2012/prawa-i-obowiazki-wynajmujacego/

- only after 1 year of not paying he can confiscate his things.

Art. 687. Jeżeli najemca lokalu dopuszcza się zwłoki z zapłatą czynszu co najmniej za dwa pełne okresy płatności, a wynajmujący zamierza najem wypowiedzieć bez zachowania terminów wypowiedzenia, powinien on uprzedzić najemcę na piśmie, udzielając mu dodatkowego terminu miesięcznego do zapłaty zaległego czynszu.

A jeśli był to najem objęty ustawą o ochronie -praw lokatorów (wyłączony jest z tej ustawy tylko najem okazjonalny), to musi być zaległość za 3 miesiące, upomnienie i dopiero rozwiązanie umowy;

forumprawne.org/prawo-nieruchomosci-lokalowe-budowlane/125221-wypowiedzenie-umowy-w-trybie-natychmiastowym-co-z-czynszem.html

So you landlord has no right to evict him just because he doesn't pay 1 month rent.

Yes she can change the locks, its her apartment she can do as she wishes it is simply an improvement for security. If he does not pay his rent she can also take all of his possesion's out of the apartment, he has absolutely no right to change the locks as he has given notice to vacate,if he wanted to be a real areh@le there are other ways.

And about entering apartment by landlord while tenant is not there

kancelaria-kurzeja.pl/Czy-wlasciciel-moze-wejsc-do-mieszkania-pod-nieobecnosc-lokatora.html

So it's allowed only in extreme situation and with Police. If he's just changing locks then it's obstruction not security upgrade.

Life / I am moving to Bydgoszcz and need some answers to my questions [8]

That's a good advice. If you want to learn Polish fast, then the best option is to live for some time in shared apartment with other Polish people. Don't expect big foreign communities in Rzeszów. Electronics prices are comparable, so don't send them from France when shipping cost is too big. About banks, I've heard that this one is not bad: aliorbank.pl/en or internet banking sync.pl but I don't know about interests there.

Life / Cost of living in Wroclaw (rent price too) [119]

1. around 30%
2. apartment min. 1500zł + 1200 for other expenses. So it is possible, but sparingly.
3. i guess further from center is cheaper
6&7. we don't us AC in Poland. When apartments have furniture then they are usually old, so you don't have to pay extra, rather tolerate them

8. Are you asking weather there is enough public transport during night? There are some buses and trams, but less.
9. Not with 5000 salary.
10. Read embassy website to learn about Visas. If you have working visa from out of EU then it's usually for given company which you cannot change easily i think.

11. With 5000 gross you will have to seriously save to have money for ticket to India at least once per year.

Law / U.S. Citizen Moving to Poland - opening business? [36]

If you were born in Poland from Polish parents, then it must be possible to regain papers. Somewhere in Poland you must be registered. If you have German papers, that's also enough to live in Poland (German id or passport) because of EU. Here you have info about insurance cost:

nfz.gov.pl/new/index.php?katnr=2&dzialnr=1&artnr=1443

So it looks like: 7576pln at the beginning and later 340pln/month
I think that an average cash a couple dispose per month is around 4000zł, but then some of them own flat. And Polish average is low, so your 7000 could be a good number for traveling. It makes difference where you rent a flat, while in small town it can costs 1000zł for big apartment and in Warsaw 3000zł for the same size.
