Travel / Starbucks in Wawel Castle, Krakow. Is this a joke or true? [42]

probably why they're closing stores...in melbourne starbucks is usually frequented by internationals who dont know better.

I am in Toronto and the coffee tastes good, possible because other coffee outlets have worse coffee.

first of all, i gotta wonder if a Starbucks coffee in Poland will taste anything like Starbucks coffee in America.

that might be true, sounds like the one in Poland is crap.

Starbucks coffee here will have different water, different milk, different sugar most likely.....different coffee. i'm not a coffee drinker so i couldn't tell you the difference myself.....but i'm just sayin'.

you might be onto something. I have never tried Polish Starbucks, so I cannot tell how bad or good it is. besides, I like strong coffee and Starbucks seems to make it.

Starbucks seems to have changed the coffee culture in the US.

it did indeed, as well as in Canada.

If you like good coffee, what on earth are you doing in Starbucks? There is one directly opposite my apartment building: I've been there three times and do not plan on ever going back. The first time I got probably the worst sandwich I have ever had in Poland (and it was only a BLT, nothing fancy!), the second time I got watery latte that tasted of pretty much nothing, the third time I ordered a small black coffee (to see what their basic ingredient was like) and got a cup of bitter nastiness.

I am in Toronto, not in W-wa - I was there over a month ago and I tried a different coffee chain - forgot the name (they have sandwiches is stuff- the same idea as Starbucks though), it was pretty good. Starbucks coffee is strong, but once you have it with steamed milk it is good. I make my own coffee at home, go to Starbucks when I am on a go.

The best coffee I had in South America- Venezuela.

History / Polish patriotic songs with anticommunist message [21]

It's "Świadkowie" ("Witnesses"):
Lyrics:

thank you for that. I have not heard this song in ages and it takes me to a really sentimental times in my life:). What a great song that is.

I also like "Obława" :) I've read it's a modified translation of Vladimir Vysotsky's "Охота на волков"?

I think I knew that. Vysocki was great.

And I like "Mury" ("Walls"). It was an anthem of Solidarity movement:

that is right.

Thanks a lot Paulina:)

History / Polish patriotic songs with anticommunist message [21]

youtu.be/v0NAXRuc7Jg

I like this one, which in my mind described those times as well. Jacek Kaczmarski (RIP)

Pawian,

there is a line I remember from one of the songs from the period, I think it is Kaczmarski as well:
wejdzmy w wode glebiej kochani,
dosyc tego brodzenia przy brzegu,

zanurzylismy juz po kolana,

nasze nogi zmeczone po biegu........

News / 30 years of Solidarity in Poland? Fat chance! [23]

that many of them were content to share power.

some say that there was another "unofficial" agreement of the Round Table, that would explain why some communist were never put on trial.

We can now clearly see where that led - to complete disaster in the shipyards, in Ciegelski and others.

that is true, I am from Szczecin and I saw the deterioration of the Szczecin shipyard with my own eyes. The company was divided into many separate entities, so the flow of money could not be controlled, even though the Shipyard had building contracts until 2010 - that was 10 years ago and then it just did not materialize. Szczecin still has not lifted itself up after the shipyard failure.

The man made observations and is sharing them. What's the problem with that? A forum is to discuss them and, if necessary, to validate or debunk them. We may never fully prove or disprove any given point but the beauty lies in their discussion.

right on, but some people get offended. Observations are observations and I think that OP made some really good points.

I wouldn't even say that Starbucks coffee is fairly good to be honest. I have been in a few round the world (generally meeting people) and I have been constantly disappointed with the quality of their coffee. Really the lowest rung of the ladder in my opinion.

that is OK, I guess I am not that demanding- I just like the taste, always drink mild with steamed milk. I guess it is the best in the area and since I live in a big city I cannot travel miles to search for the best cup of coffee.

I just don't see why people go to Starbucks for this when,

people go to Starbuck to sit there for hours, do work on their computers and so on. At least here. Cannot be done in other coffee shops.

Have you ever kept fowls? At times hens got crazy and fully take rooster's functions upon themselves. They start to crow and feather other hens. Such hens go straight to soup as they lose their natural functions.

people are not chickens.

Nobody has mentioned the Kinsey Scale yet.

Life / Polish pride. PL stickers, flags and the white eagle! Where does our obsession come from? [79]

I would have thought though that given our history the same thing would happen in Ireland but it doesn't really - at least not that I've noticed. You get a bit of flag flying but it's confined to villages in contentious border areas and with strong republican traditions.

yet, Irish flags and symbols are widely know around the world.

Now to my own obsessions! Although I currently live in Oz, I have a PL sticker on the car.

I am guessing it is harder to keep your national identity in such a country as Australia, since ethnicity is not the most important thing, so you need to identify with something eg. Polish roots by sometime "artificial" means, which symbolically bring you closer to Poland.

News / 30 years of Solidarity in Poland? Fat chance! [23]

The weirdest reaction was that of Szczypińska, Jarek's girlfriend (yeah, right). She was all smiles. It could have been a weird reaction of disbelief but she looked like she was having a great time hearing Krzywonos read the riot act.
She was also all smiles when PiS lost the parliamentary elections a couple of years ago, she seemed thrilled that her party lost..... weird.

yah, I noticed that too, didn't know her name. I guess she wears this smile on every occasion, which is too bad because no one knows what she really thinks. What a weird look for a politician or a party member.

showed the lack of manners in Kaczyński surroundings.

only in Kaczynski's ? There were people form both sides and more such as Solidarity members who are not associated with either.
For me that was just another of lack of acceptance that PO is in power, which overridden the importance of Solidarity in Polish history. Petty.

I mentioned a vague sexism - old fashioned manners/chivalry that spilled over into patronisation and machismo some of the time.

I can see that. It is not socially accepted that women in Poland would drink as much as men, therefore they are not served as often, many refuse when they are served because they don't want to be seen as drinkers- it is not womanly.

Daniel Libeskind (now).

that is off the table as well and off the topic.

News / 30 years of Solidarity in Poland? Fat chance! [23]

maybe that, but not so much. What I noticed during this meaning was the way how people reacted to her speech. Some were smiling, some were surprised, some whistled.

The fact is that there was a Premier of Poland, a former Premier of Poland present, among other important people. Just out of respect for those persons, people should listen.

I guess some Poles don't think it is necessary to listen to others, but they forget that it is a base for any democratic system. She mentioned freedom of speech, yet, she was whistled- what a shame to those who did that.

YOU GO GIRL!

hat off to her.

Maybe its Teffle's culture, he comes from a country were people will go out of their way to be friendly, I think his comments are on the money.

I find Irish fairly friendly, yet they can stand up for themselves when needed,(attended Polish - Irish wedding in Poland this year - had more fun with Irish) some Poles are just miserable/hostile and suspicious towards people they don't know.

ur Polish friends actually seemed to change (for the worse) the moment they arrived in Poland - I'm not kidding!

I can see that.

Life / Any treatment centres for homos in Poland? [455]

saw this article recently...

interesting comment from that article:
Controversies over the portrayal of sexuality or unusual sexual preferences in school books are nothing new to Poland. A few years ago one book generated public attention after it printed an article on how some men like to dress up as women next to a picture of a kilted Scotsman.

so according to this book on homosexuality some Scots and Irish for that matter must be homosexuals simply by wearing a kilt, but Skocja2007 said he is NOT. lol Where is Davie ?

I cannot even think that somebody would be so silly to claim such thing. That means that all men in Bali are homosexuals too:)

If someone provides statistics showing that homosexuals live on average 20-25 years shorter precisely because of their risky lifestyle, the HOMOPHOBE label is hurled.

please provide links to studies and statistics supporting your claims.

You are right: the term homo is derogatory, therefore you should have used the term "homosexual".

Please define gaydom, and gay and how it differs in comparison to homosexual.

What's the point of creating new taboos?

nobody is creating a new taboo. Homosexuality is not an illness, therefore it cannot be cured. So the premise of your thinking is false. Nothing less, nothing more.
